Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 3, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
A leadoff homer by Greg Luzinski in the 10th inning lifted the White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Tigers, Detroit's fifth straight defeat. The Tigers had tied the game in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Lance Parrish. Sox reliever LaMarr Hoyt upped his record to 3-0.

Brewers 6, Royals 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Three-run homers by Ben Oglivie and Ted Simmons powered the Brewers to a 6-1 victory over the Royals. Oglivie's blast came in the first inning and followed singles by Marshall Edwards and Cecil Cooper. Simmons' clout came in the eighth frame. The loss left the K.C. record at 2-8, the worst start in the club's 13-year history.

Twins 7, Angels 5 at Minnesota (day game):
Back-to-back doubles by Glenn Adams and Rob Wilfong enabled the Twins to break a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning and go on to a 7-5 triumph over the Angels. Adams' two-bagger scored Dave Engle, aboard via an error by Butch Hobson, with the tie-breaking tally and Wilfong's smash drove in Danny Goodwin, pinch-running for Adams. Doug Corbett blanked the Angels for the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up the victory.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 2 at New York (night game):
Recording their fourth straight victory, the Yankees downed the Blue Jays, 4-2. The Yanks scored twice in the first inning on a wild pitch and RBI infield grounder by Reggie Jackson, and made it 3-0 in the seventh on a solo homer by Graig Nettles. The final N.Y. marker came in the eighth frame on a run-scoring single by Jerry Mumphrey. Rich Gossage, although yielding a two-run homer to Willie Upshaw -- the first batter he faced -- recorded his fourth save of the season.

A's 6, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Mike Norris registered his fourth victory of the season on a five-hitter as the A's breezed past the Mariners, 6-2. The A's tallied twice in their first turn at bat on run-scoring singles by Dwayne Murphy and Mitchell Page and erupted for four runs in the third on a leadoff homer by Murphy, run-scoring double by Tony Armas and two-run pinch-single by Cliff Johnson.

Phillies 6, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run homer by Mike Schmidt climaxed a four-run fifth inning that carried the Phillies to a 6-4 victory over the Cubs, extending Chicago's losing streak to 10 games. The score was 1-1 when Steve Carlton opened the fifth with a walk and moved to third on a double by Pete Rose. A single by Bake McBride drove in both runners and Schmidt then unloaded his 31st Wrigley Field career round-tripper.

Reds 3, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Limiting Houston to four hits -- including two infield singles -- Frank Pastore pitched the Reds to a 3-0 blanking of the Astros. The Reds scored in the first inning on a one-out double by Ken Griffey and two-out single by George Foster, and made it 3-0 in the ninth on a run-scoring double by Johnny Bench and RBI single by Pastore.

Padres 6, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rallying for three runs in the ninth inning, the Padres posted a 6-5 come-from-behind triumph over the Dodgers. The Padres trailed, 5-3, entering the ninth, when Luis Salazar singled, moved to third on a single by Barry Evans and scored on a single by Gene Richards. After Dave Goltz replaced Bobby Castillo on the mound for L.A., Dave Edwards stroked a single to plate Evans. Steve Howe then took over the mound chores and gave up a single to Ruppert Jones that drove in the decisive run.

Braves 7, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Extending their winning streak to five games, the Braves defeated the Giants, 7-1, behind Bob Walk's first victory in an Atlanta uniform. The game was tied, 1-1, when Dale Murphy led off the seventh inning with a double and scored on a single by Bruce Benedict. Atlanta put the contest on ice with five runs in the ninth on two errors, two walks and three hits, including run-scoring singles by Biff Pocoroba and Jerry Royster.
