Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, Orioles 5 at Baltimore (day game):
Erasing an early 4-0 deficit, the Red Sox overcame the Orioles, 7-5, with a three-run rally in the eighth inning. Dennis Eckersley, rapped for five runs and six hits in the first three innings, allowed just three hits thereafter to complete the route and be the winner. A two-run single by Jerry Remy was the key blow of the eighth frame and Carl Yastrzemski added insurance with a sacrifice fly.

Indians 4, Rangers 3 at Cleveland (day game):
A three-run outburst in the bottom of the ninth inning enabled the Indians to shade the Rangers, 4-3. The Tribe trailed, 3-1, when Bo Diaz drew a leadoff walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Jerry Dybzinski. After Rick Manning also walked, John Henry Johnson replaced Jim Kern on the mound for Texas and retired pinch-hitter Miguel Dilone. But Alan Bannister got a bloop single that scored Dybzinski and sent Manning to third. A sacrifice fly by Jorge Orta scored Manning and Bannister reached second on the play at the plate. Mike Hargrove then singled home Bannister to win the game.

White Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (day game):
The first hit of the season by Bob Molinaro, a two-run triple, capped a three-run rally in the seventh inning that lifted the White Sox to a 5-4 triumph over the Tigers. The Sox, trailing 4-2 going into the seventh, loaded the bases on a walk, single by Lamar Johnson and a hit batsman. Kevin Saucier relieved Milt Wilcox on the mound for the Tigers and struck out Harold Baines, but pinch-hitter Carlton Fisk delivered a sacrifice fly and Molinaro then lined a three-bagger to right field.

Brewers 11, Royals 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Ted Simmons had a two-run homer and four RBIs and Gorman Thomas hit a two-run homer to spark the Brewers to an 11-1 rout of the Royals. Simmons, who clouted his round-tripper in the second inning for the Brewers' first two runs, also delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh and run-scoring single in the eighth. Thomas belted his homer in the fourth. Randy Lerch, making his first start of the season, limited K.C. to six hits over eight innings to gain the win.

[DH] Angels 7, Twins 1 (day game) / Twins 5, Angels 2 at Minnesota (day game):
The Angels and Twins split a doubleheader, the Angels winning the first game, 7-1, as Mike Witt recorded his first major league victory on a two-hitter, and the Twins capturing the second contest, 5-2. The Angels scored four runs in the fifth inning of the opener on run-scoring singles by Bert Campaneris and Rick Burleson, a bases-loaded walk and an error. The final two California runs of the game came on a hit batsman with the bases full and a wild pitch. The Twins jumped to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the nightcap on a two-run homer by Roy Smalley that followed an error by Campaneris.

Blue Jays 2, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
Scattering seven hits, Dave Stieb pitched the Blue Jays to a 2-1 triumph over the Yankees. The Jays scored both of their runs in the third inning. Ernie Whitt smacked a leadoff double and tallied on a double by Lloyd Moseby, who reached third on an infield single by Damaso Garcia and scored when he and Garcia worked a double steal.

A's 9, Mariners 4 at Seattle (day game):
A three-run homer by Dwayne Murphy in the sixth inning was the key blow as the A's continued their winning ways by subduing the Mariners, 9-4. The A's were behind, 4-3, when Mike Heath led off the sixth with a single and reached second when pinch-hitter Mike Patterson drew a one-out walk. After Rickey Henderson popped out, Murphy connected for the circuit on an 0-2 count. The A's scored three more runs in the ninth on an RBI double by Tony Armas, run-scoring single by Heath and a bonehead play by Seattle center fielder Joe Simpson. Simpson caught Dave McKay's long fly for the second out of the frame but thought it was the third out. He trotted toward the dugout, allowing Cliff Johnson to score from second.

Phillies 6, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run homer by Mike Schmidt keyed the Phillies' 6-2 victory over the Cubs. The score was 1-1 in the third inning when Bake McBride doubled and Schmidt hit for the circuit. The Phils added two more markers in that frame on a run-scoring single by Larry Bowa and RBI groundout by Bob Boone. Their twelfth straight loss dropped the Cubs' record to 1-13, tying the club record for futility over the first 14 games of the season. The 1944 Cubs won their opener and then lost 13 straight.

Astros 1, Reds 0 at Houston (day game):
Spacing eight hits, Bob Knepper posted his second straight 1-0 shutout as the Astros defeated the Reds. Knepper had beaten the Dodgers by the same score in his last start. The only run of the contest came when Denny Walling laced Mario Soto's third pitch of the game into the right field seats for his first homer of the year.

Dodgers 3, Padres 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Limited to pinch-hitting duties while recovering from a shoulder operation, Reggie Smith doubled in the eighth inning for his first hit of the season, lifting the Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the Padres. After the Padres tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the eighth on a run-scoring double by Ruppert Jones, Steve Garvey led off the bottom of the frame with a single, was sacrificed to second by Ron Cey and, after a walk to Pedro Guerrero, scored on Smith's two-bagger.

[DH] Expos 8, Mets 4 (day game) / Expos 7, Mets 6 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos extended their winning streak to six games by sweeping a doubleheader from the Mets, 8-4 and 7-6. The Expos jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a two-run homer by Ellis Valentine and an error by Mets' center fielder Lee Mazzilli on Gary Carter's triple. Carter also cracked a two-run homer in the third stanza. Montreal tallied two runs in the first inning of the second game on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Manuel and solo homer by Andre Dawson. Manuel collected his first major league round-tripper in the seventh inning, a three-run shot that followed a single by Bobby Ramos and a walk to Tim Raines. The Mets' Dave Kingman blasted a homer in the ninth inning of the first game, hit a solo shot in sixth inning of the second game and a two-run belt in the ninth.

Cardinals 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A pinch-single by Tito Landrum in the ninth inning delivered the winning run as the Cardinals shaded the Pirates, 3-2, for their eighth straight victory. Tommy Herr singled with two out, stole second and came in on Landrum's hit. George Hendrick drove in two runs for the Cards with a homer and sacrifice fly, and Mike Easler drove in Pittsburgh's runs with a single and sacrifice fly.

[DH] Giants 3, Braves 1 (day game) / Giants 8, Braves 5 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants ended their five-game losing streak and snapped Atlanta's six-game winning skein by winning both ends of a twin bill from the Braves, 3-1 and 8-5. Doyle Alexander notched his third win of the season and the second over his former Atlanta teammates in the opener as the Giants scored in the sixth inning on a run-scoring double by Enos Cabell, in the seventh on a solo homer by Jack Clark and in the eighth on an RBI single by Joe Morgan. Four hits by Darrell Evans paced Frisco's 17-hit attack in the nightcap. A two-run double by Morgan was the key blow in a three-run fifth inning that tied the game at 4-4 before the Giants went ahead with two tallies in the sixth, pinch-hitter Jim Wohlford singing in the go-ahead run.
