Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] Orioles 4, Blue Jays 3 (night game) / Orioles 8, Blue Jays 3 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles maintained their mastery over the Blue Jays in Baltimore, sweeping a twi-night doubleheader, 4-3 and 8-3. It was the Jays' 19th consecutive loss in Baltimore since July, 1978. Jose Morales won the opener with a ninth-inning double, scoring Lenn Sakata, who had singled and gone to second on Ken Singleton's sacrifice. The hit came after the Jays thought they had gotten Morales on a called third strike. Catcher Ernie Whitt was ejected for protesting ump Larry Barnett's call. Jim Palmer pitched a complete game for the victory, and Scott McGregor hurled another complete game in the nightcap, scattering seven hits. The Orioles scored five runs after two were out in the sixth, highlighted by Eddie Murray's two-run single.
Twins 11, Red Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
The Twins sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning and scored six runs off Mike Torrez en route to an 11-2 rout of the Red Sox, dealing Boston its sixth consecutive loss -- the club's longest losing streak since 1977. John Castino and Glenn Adams each had two RBIs in Minnesota's opening assault. The Twins added three more in the second on Rick Sofield's two-run double and Sal Butera's RBI two-bagger.
Brewers 8, Angels 5 at California (night game):
The Brewers blasted four home runs and 16 hits in all to slug the Angels, 8-5. Larry Hisle rapped a three-run homer in the first before the Angels tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Dan Ford belted a solo homer with two out, and after Fred Lynn and John Harris singled to put men on first and third, the Brewers' Moose Haas balked to let in a run and Ed Ott's single tied it. The Brewers scored four runs in the third on Cecil Cooper's leadoff homer, a two-run blast by Ted Simmons and Jim Gantner's RBI single. Milwaukee's Gorman Thomas added a solo homer in the fifth after the Angels had scored their final runs on Rick Burleson's run-scoring double and Ford's RBI groundout.
Indians 3, White Sox 1 at Cleveland (day game):
The Indians won their fourth straight and ninth in the last 10 as Len Barker scattered seven hits and second baseman Duane Kuiper -- starting his first game since last June 1 -- slapped two hits in a 3-1 triumph over the White Sox. Kuiper singled and eventually scored on Rick Manning's groundout for the Indians' first run in the third inning. Bo Diaz opened the Cleveland fifth with a single, moved to third on Kuiper's single and scored when Tom Veryzer hit into a double play.
A's 6, Yankees 3 at Oakland (day game):
Solo homers by Tony Armas, Rob Picciolo, Rickey Henderson and Cliff Johnson helped A's starter Matt Keough remain undefeated and led Oakland to their second straight victory over the Yankees, 6-3. Armas' eighth homer of the season gave the A's a 1-0 lead in the second and the Yanks' Dave Winfield tied it with an RBI single in the third before the A's scored three in the bottom of the inning on successive homers by Picciolo and Henderson and Tim Hosley's run-scoring single.
Mariners 3, Tigers 1 at Seattle (night game):
Richie Zisk singled in a run in the first inning -- running his hitting streak to 15 games -- after Tom Paciorek doubled home the first run of the inning in leading the Mariners to a 3-1 victory over the Tigers. Seattle added an unearned tally in the second when Lenny Randle walked, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Detroit starter Dan Petry and came home on Joe Simpson's groundout. Floyd Bannister, who gave up Lou Whitaker's first homer of the season in the fifth, combined with Dick Drago on a seven-hitter.
Royals 7, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Dennis Leonard pitched a five-hitter to notch his first complete game of the season as the Royals rapped the Rangers, 7-2. The Royals scored their first run in the second when Cesar Geronimo singled home Willie Aikens, who had doubled. K.C. tallied two more in the fourth when Aikens doubled again and scored on Frank White's single, and Amos Otis singled and eventually scored on Geronimo's groundout. Jamie Quirk had a two-run double and Otis an RBI single for the Royals' final runs in the seventh.
Cubs 5, Braves 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs' Randy Martz, making his first start after five relief appearances, combined with Dick Tidrow on a five-hitter and cracked the decisive two-run single in the fourth inning of a 5-2 victory over the Braves. Atlanta had taken a 2-0 lead on Dale Murphy's sacrifice fly in the first and doubles by Glenn Hubbard and Rafael Ramirez in the second. Leon Durham singled for the Cubs and stole second in the fourth, and one out later Tim Blackwell walked and Ivan DeJesus doubled to score Durham. Martz followed with a liner off shortstop Ramirez' glove into center field.
Dodgers 4, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Ron Cey smacked a three-run homer in the fourth inning and Ken Landreaux laced a solo shot in the fifth to support Jerry Reuss' seven-hit pitching in the Dodgers' 4-0 victory over the Expos. The loss was Montreal's first at home after nine victories this season. Rookie Tim Raines, who had stolen 27 bases in a row over two seasons, including the minors, finally was nailed in the first inning. He had swiped second base but Dodger catcher Mike Scioscia got him when he tried to pilfer third.
Mets 6, Padres 2 at New York (day game):
The Mets used a pair of three-run innings to end their seven-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Padres. John Stearns tripled home Mookie Wilson, who had walked, in the first inning and Dave Kingman followed with a two-run homer. In the third, Alex Trevino drove in a run by beating out a bases-loaded infield single, and Doug Flynn then delivered a two-run single to cap the Mets' scoring.
[DH] Giants 6, Phillies 2 (night game) / Phillies 3, Giants 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies used the home-run ball to whip the Giants, 3-1, in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader after the Giants took the opener, 6-2, on a combined six-hitter by Doyle Alexander and Greg Minton. The Phils' Marty Bystrom pitched a three-hitter in the nightcap, yielding a fifth-inning homer to Darrell Evans. Keith Moreland slugged two homers for the Phils, in the sixth and eighth, and Mike Schmidt homered in the fourth. Evans also had a homer and two-run single in the opener. Jack Clark smashed a two-run homer and Enos Cabell had an RBI single. Gary Matthews' two-bagger in the eighth drove in the Phils' only two runs.
Pirates 5, Astros 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates snapped the Astros' five-game winning streak as second baseman Kiko Garcia bobbled Mike Easler's one-out grounder in the 12th inning, allowing John Milner to score the decisive run in a 5-4 victory. Milner had walked and taken third on a single by Bill Madlock before Easler hit a slow roller to Garcia, who fumbled the ball before throwing late to the plate. Each team scored in the 10th, Houston on a sacrifice fly by Mike Ivie and Pittsburgh on Madlock's groundout.
Cardinals 7, Reds 3 at St. Louis (day game):
The Cardinals posted their 10th victory in the last 11 games with a 7-3 decision over the Reds as unbeaten Bob Shirley scattered six hits for his third triumph. The Cards tallied three times in the fourth off starter Bruce Berenyi on Dane Iorg's run-scoring single, Ken Oberkfell's RBI groundout and Tommy Herr's sacrifice. The Redbirds' final four runs came across in the seventh on an RBI two-bagger by Keith Hernandez, bases-loaded walk to Darrell Porter by reliever Doug Bair, and a two-run single by Oberkfell.
