Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Twins 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Pinch-hitter Terry Crowley's single in the bottom of the 10th inning drove in the winning run as the Orioles edged the Twins, 4-3. Eddie Murray began the Orioles' 10th with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Benny Ayala. After Gary Roenicke reached first safely on an error by first baseman Ron Jackson and Doug DeCinces struck out, Crowley delivered a single down the right field line to plate Murray.

Yankees 4, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Homers by Lou Piniella and Barry Foote and sensational relief pitching by Ron Davis carried the Yankees to a 4-3 triumph over the Angels. The score was 2-2 with one out in the sixth inning when Piniella connected for the circuit. One out later, Foote also slammed a round-tripper. Davis, in relief of Gene Nelson, who made his major league debut, pitched three hitless innings, striking out the last eight batters he faced. The performance tied Nolan Ryan's A. L. consecutive strikeout record and set a big league mark for consecutive strikeouts for relief pitchers, eclipsing the mark of seven set by Denny McLain in 1965.

Red Sox 8, Royals 7 at Kansas City (night game):
In a contest that was suspended after 10 innings and completed the next day, the Red Sox defeated the Royals, 8-7 in 12 innings. After a scoreless 11th, the Sox tallied three times in the 12th on a run-scoring double by Glenn Hoffman and RBI singles by Jerry Remy and Carl Yastrzemski. A two-run homer by Amos Otis in the bottom of the frame left K.C. a run shy.

Brewers 9, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
Jim Gantner drilled a bases-loaded double to key a four-run seventh inning and Robin Yount smacked two homers as the Brewers overpowered the Mariners, 9-5. The game was tied, 5-5, when the Brewers loaded the sacks in the seventh on a double by Simmons, fielder's choice grounder by Thomas on which Simmons was thrown out at third, a single by Don Money and a walk to pinch-hitter Roy Howell. Gantner's two-bagger drove in two runs, a single by Yount drove in another and the final tally came on a throwing error by left fielder Dan Meyer. Yount clouted a two-run round-tripper in the third and fired a solo blast in the sixth. The Mariners scored all five of their runs in the sixth, the outburst being capped by a three-run homer by Jerry Narron.

Astros 5, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
A three-run homer by Jose Cruz in the first inning triggered the Astros to a 5-4 decision over the Cubs. An error by shortstop Ivan DeJesus on a grounder by Terry Puhl and a walk to Danny Heep preceded the circuit clout. The Astros added two runs in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Alan Ashby and Kiko Garcia. The Cubs rallied for three in the ninth on a two-run double by Steve Dillard and an RBI single by Bill Buckner before Joe Sambito struck out Leon Durham for the final out with the tying run on third.

Expos 4, Dodgers 3 at Montreal (night game):
Aided by Los Angeles misplays, the Expos scored four runs in the second inning and edged the Dodgers, 4-3. Warren Cromartie began the bottom of the second with a single, reached second on a walk to Rowland Office but was thrown out attempting to score on a single by Chris Speier. As the play continued, Speier was caught in a rundown between first and second and reached second as Office scored. Steve Rogers then reached first on an error by third baseman Ron Cey as Speier scored. After a walk to Tim Raines, a single by Rodney Scott plated Rogers and Raines also tallied when right fielder Rick Monday bobbled the ball.

Phillies 6, Giants 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
After giving up four runs on five hits over the first three innings, Steve Carlton permitted just two hits the rest of the way in recording his 254th career victory, 6-4 over the Giants. The Phils trailed, 4-3, with one out in the sixth when Garry Maddox and Larry Bowa stroked consecutive singles. A single by Bob Boone drove home Maddox and Bowa reached third when left fielder Larry Herndon bobbled the ball. Carlton then grounded to shortstop Johnnie LeMaster, who bobbled the ball before throwing out Carlton, allowing Bowa to score. The Phils added an insurance marker in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Gary Matthews.

Braves 9, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (night game):
Bob Horner went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Braves to a 9-6 triumph over the Cardinals. Horner drilled a run-scoring double in the fourth inning, collected an RBI single in the sixth and broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth against reliever Bruce Sutter with his second run-scoring double. Glenn Hubbard capped the eighth-inning rally with a two-run single.
