Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Twins 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Scoring three runs in the first two innings, the Orioles held on to edge the Twins, 3-2, with Tippy Martinez notching his third save by getting the final two outs with the tying run on base. The Birds tallied twice in the first inning on a run-scoring double by Rich Dauer and sacrifice fly by Jim Dwyer, and picked up another in the second frame on a sacrifice fly by Dauer.

Angels 6, Yankees 2 at California (night game):
Effective relief pitching by Jesse Jefferson and Don Aase enabled the Angels to prevail over the Yankees, 6-2. Jefferson, coming on in relief in the first inning when Angels starter Bill Travers departed with tendinitis after walking leadoff batter Willie Randolph on four pitches, hurled 6 2/3 innings and was charged with only one run before Aase came on to get the last seven outs. The Angels scored three times in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Don Baylor and run-scoring single by Bobby Grich. Baylor had an RBI infield single in the fifth, Rick Burleson doubled home another marker in the sixth, and Brian Downing drilled a solo homer in the seventh.

Royals 2, Red Sox 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Following the completion of the prior night's suspended game, won by the Red Sox in 12 innings, the Royals captured the regularly scheduled game, 2-1, behind the four-hit pitching of Larry Gura. The Royals snapped a 1-1 tie when John Wathan opened the bottom of the seventh with a double, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Dave Chalk and tallied on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Grote.

A's 6, Tigers 2 at Oakland (night game):
Going the distance for the fifth time in six starts and becoming the league's first six-game winner, Mike Norris hurled the A's to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers as Wayne Gross led Oakland's attack with four hits, including a homer and a pair of doubles. Gross' second two-bagger drove in Dave Revering with Oakland's first run in the fourth inning and the third baseman cracked a solo homer in the sixth. A fifth-inning round-tripper by Dwayne Murphy accounted for the A's second run.

Brewers 4, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
A three-run homer by Robin Yount propelled the Brewers to a 4-1 victory over the Mariners. Yount's blast came with none out in the third inning and followed a double by Sal Bando and a walk to Ed Romero. The Brewers' final run came in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Ben Oglivie.

Rangers 6, White Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
A three-run homer by Leon Roberts was the big blow as the Rangers posted a 6-1 victory over the White Sox. The game was 0-0 in the bottom of the sixth when Roberts connected. The blast was preceded by a double by Bump Wills and a walk to Al Oliver. The Rangers added two markers in the seventh on a squeeze bunt by Mario Mendoza and sacrifice fly by Wills, and concluded the scoring in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Johnny Grubb.

Astros 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run pinch-double by Alan Ashby in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Astros to a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. The Astros trailed, 3-2, when Jose Cruz began the ninth with a single, advanced to second on an infield hit by Art Howe and reached third when Chicago shortstop Scott Fletcher threw the ball away. After Gary Woods flied out and Kiko Garcia struck out, Dickie Thon, running for Howe, stole second. Ashby, hitting for Luis Pujols, the drilled a double just inside the left field line to plate the decisive runs.

Expos 4, Padres 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos shaded the Padres, 4-3, as Willie Montanez drove home the winning run with a pinch-single in the bottom of the ninth inning. The game was tied, 3-3, when Warren Cromartie led off the Montreal ninth with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Larry Parrish, took third as Chris Speier grounded out and came home when Montanez stroked a ball to left-center.

Giants 9, Mets 7 at New York (night game):
Making his second start in three days and pressed into service because of the unavailability of Vida Blue, Tom Griffin scattered four hits in seven innings to pick up the victory as the Giants staved off the Mets, 9-7. The veteran righthander also belted a solo homer in the third inning and stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth. The six-run Giants' fifth was highlighted by a two-run triple by Larry Herndon and two-run homer by Billy Smith. The Mets rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the ninth and had two runners on base before Greg Minton got the final out by inducing Mike Cubbage to fly out to left.

Phillies 8, Dodgers 7 at Philadelphia (night game):
Rallying for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Phillies edged the Dodgers, 8-7. With the Phils behind, 7-6, the winning surge began when pinch-hitter Del Unser and Pete Rose drew one-out walks and Mike Schmidt followed with a run-scoring double. Steve Howe relieved Bobby Castillo on the hill for the Dodgers and issued an intentional pass to Gary Matthews to load the bases. Manny Trillo then lined out to Ken Landreaux in center field but the throw home was wide, allowing Rose to score the game-winning run.

Cardinals 4, Braves 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Supported by back-to-back homers by George Hendrick and Darrell Porter in the fourth inning, Lary Sorensen captured his fourth straight decision as the Cardinals downed the Braves, 4-1. The Redbirds added two more markers in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Sixto Lezcano and Mike Ramsey.
