Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 6, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Homers by Champ Summers and Steve Kemp triggered the Tigers to a 6-1 verdict over the Angels. Summers' blast came in the fourth frame and tied the game at 1-1. Kemp's shot was a two-run affair that put the Tigers ahead 3-1 in the sixth.

White Sox 9, Royals 5 at Chicago (night game):
A six-run explosion in the fourth inning carried the White Sox to a 9-5 decision over the Royals. The first two runs of the big frame came on a homer by Wayne Nordhagen after a walk to Greg Luzinski. Chet Lemon followed with a triple and scored on a single by Jim Morrison, who raced to third on a single by Bill Almon. After Juan Berenguer replaced Paul Splittorff on the hill for K.C., Ron LeFlore cracked a two-run triple and subsequently scored on a wild pitch.

Twins 8, Indians 7 at Minnesota (night game):
A single by John Castino drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Twins outlasted the Indians, 8-7. After the Twins took a 7-5 lead with a three-run eighth capped by a two-run pinch-single by Danny Goodwin, the Tribe tied the contest in the top of the ninth on a two-run pinch-double by Bo Diaz. Then with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Sal Butera stroked a single, moved to second on a passed ball and, one out later, scored on a single by Castino.

A's 2, Brewers 0 at Oakland (night game):
Steve McCatty pitched his fifth complete game and second shutout as the A's downed the Brewers, 2-0. The A's runs came on a solo homer by Dwayne Murphy in the first inning and a sacrifice fly by Jeff Newman in the fourth.

Mariners 3, Yankees 2 at Seattle (night game):
Six-hit pitching by rookie Bryan Clark and homers by Jeff Burroughs and Tom Paciorek keyed the Mariners' 3-2 triumph over the Yankees. Burroughs tied the game, 2-2, with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh and Paciorek delivered the game-winning hit with a leadoff round-tripper in the bottom of the ninth.

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
With Tom Burgmeier notching his third save with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, the Red Sox defeated the Blue Jays, 4-2. The Sox opened a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Rick Miller walked, reached third on a double by Dwight Evans and continued home when second baseman Damaso Garcia fumbled the relay. Glenn Hoffman stroked a two-run single in the fourth and Jim Rice hit a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Braves 4, Cubs 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Glenn Hubbard's first homer of the season with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Braves a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. The Braves had deadlocked the game in the eighth on a walk to Chris Chambliss, single by Bob Horner, infield hit by Dale Murphy and a throwing error by Cubs shortstop Ivan DeJesus.

Reds 4, Astros 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tom Seaver, helping his own cause with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, recorded his 248th major league victory and 54th career shutout as the Reds downed the Astros, 4-0. The Reds tallied their first runs in the fourth frame on a two-run single by Ray Knight. Seaver's round-tripper, the 12th of his majoe league career, came off reliever Dave Smith with Ron Oester on base and cleared the left field wall.

Giants 4, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Giants prevailed over the Expos, 4-3, despite four stolen bases by Montreal rookie Tim Raines. The Giants broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single by Johnnie LeMaster, and scored twice in the seventh stanza on singles by Joe Morgan, Milt May and LeMaster, an RBI fielder's choice grounder by pinch-hitter Jim Wohlford and a single by Bill North.

Dodgers 1, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Surviving a shaky start, Fernando Valenzuela upped his record to 7-0 and recorded his fifth shutout as the Dodgers edged the Mets, 1-0. The rookie southpaw yielded three walks and three hits in the first two innings but pitched out of bases-loaded jams in both frames and was in complete control thereafter. Valenzuela finished with 11 strikeouts, the fourth time he's struck out 10 or more batters this season. The lone run of the game came in the first inning when Ken Landreaux reached first safely on an error by shortstop Bob Bailor, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a single by Dusty Baker.

Phillies 11, Padres 7 at Philadelphia (night game):
Two homers by Mike Schmidt and a bases-loaded triple by Manny Trillo powered the Phillies to an 11-7 victory over the Padres. Schmidt's first blast came in the fifth inning with two mates aboard and tied the game at 6-6. Then, after the Padres broke the tie in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Broderick Perkins to take a 7-6 lead, the Phillies loaded the bases on two errors and a walk, setting the stage for Trillo's three-bagger. Schmidt followed with his second round-tripper to climax the five-run inning.

Cardinals 5, Pirates 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Jim Kaat hurled 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to save a victory for Bob Shirley, now 4-0, and the Cardinals unloaded six extra-base hits in outlasting the Pirates, 5-4. The Redbirds scored two runs in the third inning on a double by Gene Tenace, triple by Garry Templeton and double by Tony Scott. They added two more in the fourth on a two-run triple by Tommy Herr and picked up their final marker in the fifth when Templeton doubled, moved to third on a groundout and came in on a sacrifice fly by Sixto Lezcano.
