Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 7, Indians 4 at Chicago (night game):
Jumping off to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings, the White Sox prevailed over the Indians, 7-4. The Sox scored twice in the opening frame when Ron LeFlore led off with a walk and came home on a triple by Tony Bernazard, who tallied on a single by Carlton Fisk. A Cleveland error helped the Sox to three more markers in the second stanza as LeFlore and Fisk stroked run-scoring singles.

Tigers 6, Mariners 2 at Detroit (night game):
Five-hit pitching by Milt Wilcox led the Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the Mariners. Detroit snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning on a run-scoring double by John Wockenfuss and broke the game open with a four-run fifth. Two tallies resulted from a balk and a wild pitch, and two more on RBI singles by Ricky Peters and Wockenfuss.

Royals 3, Rangers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Rallying for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Royals edged the Rangers, 3-2. K.C. trailed, 2-1, when Amos Otis began the bottom of the ninth wth a double and took third on a single by Lee May. Steve Comer then replaced Jon Matlack on the hill for the Rangers and walked Willie Aikens to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Frank White plated Otis with the tying run. Comer was derricked in favor of John Henry Johnson, who struck out pinch-hitter Jamie Quirk for the second out. But Willie Wilson then rapped a single to drive home the winning run.

Angels 4, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Backed by five double plays, Ken Forsch hurled the Angels to a 4-0 whitewashing of the Brewers. Milwaukee had the leadoff batter on base five times but no runner reached second base. The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a run-scoring single by Ed Ott, added two tallies in the fifth on RBI singles by Rick Burleson and Rod Carew and closed out the scoring in the ninth on a run-scoring single by Bobby Clark.

Twins 4, Red Sox 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Mickey Hatcher and Roy Smalley with two out in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Twins to a dramatic 4-3 triumph over the Red Sox. The Red Sox went ahead, 3-2, in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Carl Yastrzemski.

Yankees 4, A's 1 at New York (night game):
Ron Guidry and Rich Gossage combined to pitch the Yankees to a 4-1 triumph over the A's, Oakland's first loss on the road in 12 games this season. Guidry was forced to leave in the eighth inning when he was struck by a hard grounder off his left shin and Gossage came on to record his ninth save. The Yanks scored twice in the fourth on a solo homer by Bobby Murcer and run-scoring single by Graig Nettles, and added two tallies in the eighth on a run-scoring tripple by Willie Randolph and RBI double by Dave Winfield.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 2 at Toronto (night game):
Exploding for five runs in the fifth inning, the Blue Jays downed the Orioles, 5-2, as Dave Stieb went the route on a four-hitter. Barry Bonnell began the outburst with a walk, reached second on a single by Garth Iorg but was forced at third on a grounder by Danny Ainge. Buck Martinez then drilled a two-run double and came in on a double by Alfredo Griffin that sent Jim Palmer to the showers. Lloyd Moseby greeted reliever Sammy Stewart with a run-scoring single and, one out later, John Mayberry capped the rally with an RBI double.

Braves 2, Pirates 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Phil Niekro registered his 40th career shutout and 235th career victory with a two-hitter in the Braves' 2-0 victory over the Pirates. The veteran knuckleballer gave up a single to Phil Garner in the second inning and another to Tony Pena in the fifth, and did not allow a runner past second base in lowering his ERA to 1.84. Atlanta's first run came in the fifth when Dale Murphy cracked a leadoff double, advance to third on a single by Glenn Hubbard and raced home during a rundown when plate umpire Steve Fields ruled that third baseman Dale Berra had failed to tag Murphy. In the sixth, Claudell Washington led off with a single, went all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Biff Pocoroba and scored on a wild pitch.

Reds 2, Cubs 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
An errant throw from the outfield accounted for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Reds shaded the Cubs, 2-1. Ray Knight drew a one-out walk in the Reds' ninth. Ron Oester then extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single and, when right fielder Leon Durham's throw rolled into the Chicago dugout, Knight scored.

Cardinals 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
A successful suicide squeeze bunt by Tommy Herr in the 10th inning drove home Gene Tenace with the winning run as the Cardinals nipped the Astros, 3-2. Tenace opened the 10th with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ken Oberkfell. Tenace then dived across the plate ahead of Joe Sambito's throw after Herr's bunt for the winning margin. The Redbirds had deadlocked the contest at 2-2 in the eighth on a two-out, run-scoring single by Garry Templeton.

Dodgers 5, Expos 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Driving in four runs with two homers and a single, Ron Cey led the Dodgers to a 5-0 victory over the Expos as Burt Hooton, although needing relief help, recorded his fifth win of the campaign. Cey put the Dodgers ahead, 2-0, with a two-run circuit clout in the second inning, cracked a solo round-tripper in the seventh and stroked a run-scoring single in the eighth. Montreal rookie Tim Raines stole two bases to become the first player in modern major league history to steal 30 bases in 30 or fewer games; the Expos had played 28 games.

Padres 3, Mets 0 at San Diego (night game):
Broderick Perkins, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, delivered a single, double and homer and drove in all the runs as the Padres blanked the Mets, 3-0, behind the seven-hit pitching of Juan Eichelberger. The Padres scored two runs in the first inning on a single by Ozzie Smith, double by Gene Richards and two-run single by Perkins. Perkins unloaded a solo homer in the fourth.

Giants 4, Phillies 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Bill North went 3-for-4, stole three bases and scored two runs to spark the Giants to a 4-0 triumph over the Phillies. Doyle Alexander, pitching the first seven frames, recorded his fifth win while reducing his ERA to 1.32. North singled in the first inning to trigger a three-run rally, singled and stole second in the second and fifth frames and scored the Giants' final run in the seventh on an RBI single by Jack Clark, who also had three hits. Enos Cabell and Joe Morgan each had run-scoring doubles in the first inning and Morgan added a sacrifice fly.
