Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
A homer by Jorge Orta in the top of the 16th inning enabled the Indians to outlast the White Sox, 4-3. Orta's blast came on a 1-0 pitch leading off the 16th and broke a 3-3 deadlock that had existed since the sixth stanza when the Sox knotted the count on an RBI infield grounder by Mike Squires.

Tigers 1, Mariners 0 at Detroit (night game):
A single by Ricky Peters drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Tigers whitewashed the Mariners, 1-0, behind the three-hit pitching of Dan Petry. Champ Summers led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Kirk Gibson, who stole second. After Richie Hebner drew an intentional walk, both runners advanced on a sacrifice by Lynn Jones. The bases were loaded after an intentional pass to Lou Whitaker and Peters ended the game by lining a 1-1 pitch to left field.

Angels 6, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
A four-run eruption in the fifth inning, keyed by a two-run homer by Bobby Grich, carried the Angels to a 6-3 triumph over the Brewers. The Angels trailed, 3-2, when Rod Carew and Rick Burleson began the fifth with singles. A sacrifice fly by Don Baylor drove in Carew and, one out later, Grich clouted his fifth round-tripper of the season. Bobby Clark followed with a double and scored when Brewers shortstop Ed Romero fired low to first after fielding a grounder by Juan Beniquez.

Red Sox 5, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A three-run homer by Carl Yastrzemski triggered the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Twins. Yaz's blow came in the third inning after singles by Jerry Remy and Dwight Evans. Jim Rice followed with a double, advanced to third on a single by Tony Perez and scored when Carney Lansford bounced into a forceout.

A's 5, Yankees 4 at New York (night game):
Although needing eighth-inning relief help, Matt Keough received credit for his sixth victory of the year as the A's edged the Yankees, 5-4. The A's tallied in the first inning on a balk and upped their margin to 2-0 in the second on a run-scoring double by Dave McKay. Fred Stanley stroked an RBI single in the fourth frame and the A's scored twice in the fifth on a solo homer by Cliff Johnson and sacrifice fly by McKay. The Yanks rallied for four runs in the eighth, the outburst being capped by a two-run homer by Reggie Jackson before Bob Owchinko relieved and slammed the door.

Orioles 4, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (night game):
Three-hit hurling by Scott McGregor carried the Orioles to a 4-0 blanking of the Blue Jays. The Orioles jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by John Lowenstein and made it 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Bob Bonner. An infield single by Eddie Murray drove in an eighth-inning tally and Lowenstein led off the ninth with a homer.

Pirates 7, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
The Pirates gained a 7-5 triumph for their first victory over the Braves in 12 meetings as Tony Pena stroked a bases-loaded single in the top of the 13th inning. The score was tied, 5-5, when Tommy Boggs took over the pitching chores for Atlanta in the 13th and walked the bases full before Pena delivered a chopper over shortstop that enabled two runs to score. The Braves had tied the contest in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Terry Harper after the Bucs took a 5-4 lead in the top of that frame on a solo homer by Mike Easler.

Reds 8, Cubs 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Backed by a 15-hit attack, Ton Seaver breezed to his 249th career victory as the Reds blitzed the Cubs, 8-3. Ron Oester, who subsequently extended his hitting streak to 15 games, drove in the Reds' first run with an infield grounder in the second inning and Cincinnati upped the margin to 4-0 in the third on a run-scoring double by Dave Concepcion and two-run homer by George Foster. An RBI single by Ken Griffey and sacrifice fly by Foster produced two fourth-inning markers, and Dave Collins and Griffey had run-scoring singles in the fifth.

Astros 3, Cardinals 0 at Houston (night game):
Spacing five hits, Don Sutton notched his 53rd career shutout as the Astros topped the Cardinals, 3-0. The Astros took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out, two-run homer by Art Howe that scored Gary Woods, aboard via a one-out single. Howe's clout extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Houston's final marker came in the fifth on a leadoff walk to Terry Puhl that was followed by a run-scoring double by Kiko Garcia.

Dodgers 8, Expos 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run, two-out homer by Ron Cey climaxed a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning that boosted the Dodgers to an 8-6 triumph over the Expos. The Expos took a 6-4 lead with a five-run outburst, keyed by a two-run double by Gary Carter, in the top of the ninth. The Dodgers surge in the bottom of the frame began with one out when Davey Lopes was hit by a pitch and, one out later, reached second as shortstop Chris Speier erred on pinch-hitter Reggie Smith's grounder. With both runners on the move, Steve Garvey looped a ball into shallow right field that trickled off second baseman Rodney Scott's glove for a two-run single. Cey then unloaded his circuit swat.

Padres 5, Mets 0 at San Diego (night game):
Chris Welsh recorded his first major league shutout as the Padres defeated the Mets, 5-0. The rookie southpaw did not permit a runner beyond second base as the Padres blanked the Mets for the second straight night. The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on singles by Broderick Perkins and Joe Lefebvre and a throwing error by New York catcher Alex Trevino, and added another tally in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Terry Kennedy. San Diego iced the game with a three-run sixth on an RBI single by Juan Bonilla and two-run double by Ruppert Jones.

Giants 5, Phillies 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Milt May and Darrell Evans struck the key blows as the Giants downed the Phillies, 5-2. May drilled a two-run double in the second inning and Evans blasted a three-run homer in the third following singles by Enos Cabell and Jack Clark. Greg Minton, relieving Allen Ripley in the eighth, registered his sixth save of the season.
