Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Royals 3 at Boston (night game):
A single by Carney Lansford drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Red Sox prevailed over the Royals, 4-3. The score was 3-3 when the Sox loaded the bases in the ninth on a two-out walk to Carl Yastrzemski, single by Jim Rice and walk to Tony Perez. Lansford then followed with a single to right to end the game. The Sox had knotted the count in the fifth frame on a two-run homer by Dwight Evans and solo shot by Yaz. Mark Clear hurled 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn the victory.

Rangers 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Combining on a three-hitter, Fergie Jenkins and Steve Comer pitched the Rangers to a 2-1 decision over the White Sox. The victory was the 261st of Jenkins' career. Texas scored in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Johnny Grubb and broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh wen Bump Wills drilled a leadoff double, moved to third on a balk and, after Mickey Rivers fouled out, came home on Al Oliver's fly to deep left.

Indians 3, Blue Jays 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Len Barker pitched a perfect game as the Indians downed the Blue Jays, 3-0. Barker's perfect game was the 12th in major league history and the first since Catfish Hunter tossed one against the Minnesota Twins on May 8, 1968. Barker threw 103 pitches, 75 of them strikes, and struck out 11 of the final 17 batters he faced.

Tigers 5, Angels 1 at Detroit (night game):
Behind the six-hit pitching of Jack Morris, the Tigers downed the Angels, 5-1, ending California's five-game winning skein. Champ Summers led off the second inning with a double and scored on successive fly balls by Al Cowens and Rick Leach. Detroit boosted its lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Bill Fahey and RBI grounder by Ricky Peters. Run-scoring singles by Summers and Leach accounted for the Tigers' final two markers in the eighth.

Brewers 3, A's 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Ben Oglivie rapped two singles and a triple and drove in two runs to spark the Brewers to a 3-0 victory over the A's. Oglivie drilled a run-scoring single in the first inning following a single by Roy Howell and walk to Gorman Thomas. Milwaukee raised its margin to 2-0 in the third when Thomas doubled, went to third on a single by Oglivie and tallied on a sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons. The Brewers closed out the scoring in the fifth on a double by Cecil Cooper and run-scoring triple by Oglivie. Pete Vuckovich, although needing relief, picked up his third win of the season.

Orioles 9, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Ken Singleton cracked a homer and two singles and drove in four runs to pace a 19-hit attack that carried the Orioles to a 9-4 decision over the Twins. Singleton clouted a two-run round-tripper in the first inning following an RBI single by Rich Dauer and singled home two tallies in the eighth after the Twins had closed to within 5-4 on a two-run circuit clut by Gary Ward in the sixth. Baltimore's final two markers came in the ninth chukker on an error by Twins shortstop Roy Smalley and run-scoring single by John Lowenstein.

Braves 11, Cardinals 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run homer by Bruce Benedict climaxed a seven-run sixth inning that propelled the Braves to an 11-3 pasting of the Cardinals. The Braves trailed, 3-2, going into the sixth when they loaded the bases on a pinch-single by Brian Asselstine, single by Terry Harper and walk to Claudell Washington. After Jim Kaat relieved Lary Sorensen on the mound for the Cards, pinch-hitter Rufino Linares drove in the tying run by bouncing into a forceout. Chris Chambliss then followed with a run-scoring double and Kaat was yanked in favor of Jim Otten, who issued an intentional walk to Dale Murphy to load the bases and then was tapped for a two-run single by Glenn Hubbard before Benedict's circuit swat.

Astros 5, Cubs 0 at Houston (night game):
Allowing just four hits, Joe Niekro hurled the Astros to a 5-0 blanking of the Cubs, for the Houston club's third shutout in the last five games. The Astros tallied three runs in the third inning on a two-run double by Alan Ashby and run-scoring single by Terry Puhl, and added singletons in the sixth and seventh frames on a sacrifice fly by Puhl and RBI groundout by Art Howe, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a two-bagger in the third inning.

Dodgers 6, Mets 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers tied the game in the eighth inning on a leadoff homer by Pedro Guerrero and then they pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 verdict over the Mets when Ron Cey delivered a single to center with the bases loaded. The ninth-inning uprising began with a double by Davey Lopes. After Lopes advanced to third on a groundout by Ken Landreaux, Dusty Baker and Steve Garvey were given intentional passes before Cey provided the game-winning hit.

Reds 4, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Aided by first baseman Jason Thompson's error, the Reds scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Pirates, 4-1. The score was 1-1 when the Reds loaded the bases in the ninth on a single by George Foster, sacrifice by Johnny Bench, a wild pitch and a walk to pinch-hitter Larry Biittner. Ron Oester then hit a grounder to Thompson, who booted the ball as Foster scored. Pinch-hitter Junior Kennedy followed with a sacrifice fly, and a single by Sam Mejias capped the scoring.

Phillies 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
Steve Carlton boosted his record to 7-0 on a five-hitter as the Phillies edged the Padres, 2-1. The Phils' tallies came in the fifth inning on successive two-out singles by Manny Trillo and Bake McBride, an error by Padres center fielder Luis Salazar that enabled the runners to reach second and third, and a two-run single by Mike Schmidt. The Padres missed tying the game in the ninth when Gene Richards, who had walked, was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on a double by Barry Evans. The relay went from left fielder Gary Matthews to third baseman Schmidt to catcher Bob Boone.

Giants 4, Expos 2 at San Francisco (night game):
A homer and triple by Jerry Martin helped power the Giants to a 4-2 triumph over the Expos. Martin tripled and scored on a single by Milt May in the second inning and capped a three-run third with a solo round-tripper. The other Giants' runs in the third came on a walk to Bill North, triple by Jack Clark and sacrifice fly by Darrell Evans. Montreal rookie Tim Raines stole his 32nd base in the third inning but was nailed in the seventh after being caught in a rundown on a double steal attempt when he was fooled by pitcher Gary Lavelle's motion.
