Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 7, Tigers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
A grand slam by Roy Howell and two-run homer by Ted Simmons powered the Brewers to a 7-1 victory over the Tigers. Howell's homer came in the fourth inning after a walk to Cecil Cooper and singles by Ben Oglivie and Simmons, who connected in the eighth after a single by Oglivie. Rollie Fingers, perfect in 1 1/3 innings in relief of Mike Caldwell, picked up his ninth save.

Rangers 6, Twins 2 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers scored four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Twins, 6-2. Al Oliver and Buddy Bell led off the decisive frame with singles and one out later Johnny Grubb singled to plate the go-ahead run. After Don Cooper replaced Twins starter Roger Erickson, Leon Roberts blasted a home run.

Braves 9, Dodgers 4 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves routed Fernando Valenzuela in a seven-run fourth inning and went on to trim the Dodgers, 9-4, behind Gaylord Perry's 293rd career victory. With one out in the fourth, Dale Murphy and Chris Chambliss delivered back-to-back singles. Glenn Hubbard walked, filling the bases, and Bruce Benedict singled, scoring Murphy. After Chambliss was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Rafael Ramirez, Perry contributed a two-run single and Rufino Linares and Biff Pocoroba followed with run-scoring singles. Terry Forster relieved Valenzuela and walked Terry Harper before serving up a two-run single to Murphy.

Pirates 9, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Dale Berra's three-run double was the key blow in a five-run fifth inning that carried the Pirates to a 9-4 victory over the Cubs. Lee Lacy opened the Bucs' fifth a single, advanced on Bill Caudill's balk and scored on Omar Moreno's single. Moreno stole second and scored on a single by Bill Madlock. Jason Thompson and Phil Garner walked, setting the stage for Berra's bases-clearing double.

Reds 7, Giants 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
A five-run outburst in the eighth inning lifted the Reds to a 7-4 victory over the Giants and a sweep of the three-game series. The Reds were behind, 3-2, when Ron Oester began the bottom of the eighth with a single and reached second on a sacrifice. After pinch-hitter Larry Biittner walked, Dave Collins forced Biittner at second, Oester advancing to third. Pitcher Gary Lavelle then threw wildly past first on an attempted pickoff as Oester scored and Collins raced to third. Collins tallied on a single by Sam Mejias. After a walk to Dave Concepcion, Lavelle was relieved by Greg Minton, who was greeted by George Foster's two-run double. A run-scoring single by Dan Driessen climaxed the rally.
