Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, Tigers 5 at Baltimore (night game):
A pair of doubles by Rich Dauer and homer by Doug DeCinces helped power the Orioles to a 6-5 decision over the Tigers. Dauer doubled home Al Bumbry for the Birds' first run in the opening inning and scored later in the frame on a wild pitch. The Orioles picked up two runs in the fourth on singles by Mark Belanger and Bumbry and two-run two-bagger by Dauer. DeCinces belted a solo homer in the seventh.
Brewers 5, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
A two-run homer by Ted Simmons in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Brewers to a 5-4 triumph over the Red Sox. Milwaukee trailed, 4-3, when Cecil Cooper was hit by a pitch to open the ninth. After Cooper was forced at second on a grounder by Ben Oglivie, Simmons connected for the circuit. The Sox had gone ahead in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run homer by Joe Rudi.
Yankees 5, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Dave Righetti, getting relief help from Rich Gossage, pitched the Yankees to a 5-2 victory over the Indians. The starter allowed just three hits before being relieved in the ninth inning by Gossage, who notched his 12th save. The Yanks scored in the second stanza on an RBI forceout by Rick Cerone and added three markers in the third frame on a single by Willie Randolph, an error by third baseman Toby Harrah on a grounder by Jerry Mumphrey, sacrifice by Lou Piniella, sacrifice fly by Dave Winfield, walk to Reggie Jackson, RBI double by Cerone and run-scoring single by Graig Nettles.
Royals 3, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Driving in two runs, Willie Aikens paced the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Twins. Aikens stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth inning and broke a 1-1 tie in eighth with an RBI groundout. Frank White provided insurance with a solo homer in the ninth.
Mariners 5, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Jerry Narron led off the 12th inning with a homer, enabling the Mariners to edge the Rangers, 5-4. Narron had given the Mariners a 3-2 lead in the ninth with a pinch-hit RBI single and Seattle added another tally later in that frame on a sacrifice fly by Julio Cruz. The Rangers, however, bounced back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game on run-scoring singles by Mark Wagner and Bump Wills.
Blue Jays 6, A's 3 at Toronto (night game):
The Blue Jays dealt Oakland its ninth consecutive road loss, defeating the A's, 6-3. The Jays jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Ernie Whitt and upped their margin to 3-0 in the third on a solo homer by Barry Bonnell. Alfredo Griffin stroked a two-run single in the fourth and Danny Ainge capped the Jays' scoring with an eighth-inning squeeze bunt.
Dodgers 5, Reds 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Lashing out three hits including a three-run homer, Pedro Guerrero led the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over the Reds. The Dodgers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a run-scoring single by Guerrero, and the center fielder belted his round-tripper in the sixth following one-out singles by Steve Garvey and Ron Cey.
Expos 3, Pirates 2 at Montreal (night game):
Scott Sanderson drew a walk with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and he combined with Bill Lee on a seven-hitter as the Expos edged the Pirates, 3-2. After singles by Warren Cromartie and Larry Parrish fueled the fourth-inning uprising, Pittsburgh starter Jim Bibby then walked Jerry White and Sanderson to force in a run. Tim Raines followed with an infield single for an insurance tally. Sanderson left the game after 5 2/3 innings when he suffered a sprained right ankle after falling from the mound following a delivery.
Mets 6, Cubs 1 at New York (night game):
A three-run homer by Dave Kingman and route-going performance by righthander Mike Scott highlighted the Mets' 6-1 victory over the Cubs. The Mets scored twice in the third inning on a walk to Scott, double by Mookie Wilson and single by Bob Bailor. Wilson opened the fifth with a triple and, after an infield out, Mike Jorgensen drew a base on balls before Kingman followed with a round-tripper, his fifth in the last eight games.
Cardinals 11, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run homer by George Hendrick in the first inning triggered the Cardinals to an 11-4 rout of the Phillies. Hendrick's blast followed a single by Garry Templeton and walk to Keith Hernandez. The Redbirds added three runs in the second on run-scoring singles by Tommy Herr and Templeton and an RBI triple by Hernandez. Dane Iorg cracked a solo homer in the third and Hendrick picked up his fourth RBI with an eighth-inning single.
Braves 7, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Phil Niekro, pitching the first seven innings, notched his 236th career victory as the Braves downed the Padres, 7-1. Atlanta got a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run homer by Glenn Hubbard, and iced the game with four tallies in the ninth on run-scoring singles by Rafael Ramirez and Luis Gomez and an error by Padres left fielder Gene Richards.
Giants 3, Astros 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Combined four-hit pitching by Vida Blue and Al Holland carried the Giants to a 3-1 triumph over the Astros. The score was 1-1 going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Dave Bergman drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by Bill North. After Enos Cabell struck out, Jack Clark lined a single to left to break the tie. Clark went to second on the throw to the plate and scored on a single by Jerry Martin.
