Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 4, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Recording his sixth straight victory and eighth complete game, Jack Morris pitched the Tigers to a 4-1 triumph over the Orioles. The Tigers scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Champ Summers and picked up another marker in the second frame on a run-scoring single by Alan Trammell. Detroit iced the contest with two runs in the ninth on an RBI single by Lynn Jones and a throwing error by Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey.
Red Sox 7, Brewers 6 at Boston (day game):
After rallying for five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 6-6, the Red Sox pushed across a run in the 10th frame to shade the Brewers, 7-6. Jim Rice led off the Sox 10th with a single, reached second when losing pitcher Rollie Fingers bobbled Joe Rudi's sacrifice bunt for an error, went to third when Carney Lansford flied out to right and scored on a single by Dave Stapleton. A three-run homer by Dwight Evans was the big blow in the Sox ninth. After two runs were in on a run-scoring single by Lansford and RBI infield out by Jerry Remy, Fingers came in with two on and two out to face Evans and served up a gopher ball.
White Sox 9, Angels 0 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox spoiled Gene Mauch's debut as manager of California by whitewashing the Angels, 9-0, behind the three-hit hurling of Richard Dotson. The Sox scored in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Carlton Fisk and blew the game open with a six-run third frame with the help of errors by first baseman Rod Carew, shortstop Rick Burleson and catcher Ed Ott. Greg Luzinski drilled a two-run homer in the seventh.
Yankees 1, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Three New York pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Yankees blanked the Indians, 1-0. The lone run of the game came in the first inning when Willie Randolph led off with a single, raced to third on a single by Jerry Mumphrey and scored on Oscar Gamble's grounder to first. Rich Gossage notched his 13th save.
Royals 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A homer by Clint Hurdle with one out in the ninth inning broke a 5-5 tie and lifted the Royals to a 6-5 victory over the Twins. K.C., trailing 5-0, deadlocked the game in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Frank White and Amos Otis, run-scoring double by George Brett, sacrifice fly by Hal McRae and RBI single by Hurdle.
Rangers 6, Mariners 0 at Texas (night game):
Doc Medich pitched a four-hitter to lead the Rangers to a 6-0 blanking of the Mariners. Texas took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on singles by Mickey Rivers, Buddy Bell, Pat Putnam and Johnny Grubb and upped their lead to 3-0 in the seventh when Leon Roberts tripled and tallied on a squeeze bunt by Jim Sundberg. An RBI single by Al Oliver and two-run single by Roberts produced three eighth-inning runs.
Blue Jays 6, A's 5 at Toronto (day game):
A three-run homer by John Mayberry and a solo shot by Lloyd Moseby in the eighth inning powered the Blue Jays to a 6-5 triumph over the A's. With Toronto trailing, 5-2, and two out in the bottom of the eighth, Mayberry drilled his ninth round-tripper of the season to score Damaso Garcia, on via a fielder's choice, and Barry Bonnell, who had reached second on an error by second baseman Keith Drumright. After Mayberry's swat, Moseby followed with his circuit clout.
Reds 9, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
George Foster and Ron Oester knocked in three runs apiece to pace the Reds to a 9-1 thumping of the Dodgers while handing Burt Hooton his first loss after seven victories. The Reds tallied twice in their first turn at bat on run-scoring singles by Dave Concepcion and Foster, and added another marker in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Oester. An error by Dodgers shortstop Pepe Frias gave the Reds a run in the fifth, and Oester delivered an RBI single in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth following a triple by Joe Nolan. Foster wrapped up the scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth.
Pirates 3, Expos 2 at Montreal (day game):
Rick Rhoden raised his record to 6-0 in pitching the Pirates to a 3-2 triumph over the Expos. The Bucs scored all their runs in the third inning as Dale Berra singled, stole second and tallied on a single by Omar Moreno, who reached second when left fielder Tim Raines erred on the hit [sic], and advanced to third on pitcher Bill Gullickson's wild pickoff attempt. After Phil Garner walked, Dave Parker delivered both runners with a double.
Cubs 10, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
The Cubs sent 12 men to the plate while exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning, bombing the Mets, 10-3. Jerry Morales doubled home the big inning's first run and singled in the final two while a two-run triple by Tim Blackwell, squeeze bunt by Mike Krukow and run-scoring single by Bill Buckner accounted for the other tallies. The victory was only the second for the Cubs in their first 18 road games.
Phillies 10, Cardinals 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Dick Davis drove in five runs with a single, double and his first homer of the season to pace a 14-hit attack as the Phillies routed the Cardinals, 10-2. The Phils grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third on consecutive two-out singles by Pete Rose, Manny Trillo, Gary Matthews and Davis. Davis belted a two-run homer in the fifth and two-run double in the sixth.
Padres 11, Braves 1 at San Diego (night game):
Blasting six Atlanta pitchers -- including reserve infielder Luis Gomez -- for 18 hits, the Padres breezed to an 11-1 victory over the Braves. The Padres took a 3-0 lead in the first when Gene Richards and Terry Kennedy singled in runs and left fielder Rufino Linares' error allowed another to score. Steve Mura delivered a two-run single in the fourth and the Padres got three in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Broderick Perkins, RBI double by Joe Lefebvre and infield single by Luis Salazar.
Astros 9, Giants 8 at San Francisco (day game):
The Astros outlasted the Giants, 9-8, in a bizarre 14-inning marathon in which all San Francisco runs were unearned. The score was 8-8 in the 14th when Rafael Landestoy reached first on a fielder's choice, stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by catcher Mike Sadek and scored on a single by Terry Puhl.
