Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 5, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (day game):
Rallying from an early 4-0 deficit, the Tigers went on to a 5-4 triumph over the Orioles. Detroit picked up three tallies in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Stan Papi and a run-scoring single by Alan Trammell. Singles by Papi and Mick Kelleher put runners on first and third in the seventh stanza and both scored on a hit-and-run double by Lynn Jones. Kevin Saucier recorded his fifth save, preserving the victory for Aurelio Lopez, who notched seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings after relieving starter George Cappuzzello.

Brewers 5, Red Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
Scattering nine hits in a route-going performance, Pete Vuckovich notched his sixth straight victory as the Brewers took a 5-2 decision over the Red Sox. The Brewers scored twice in the opening inning on a leadoff homer by Jim Gantner and a run-scoring single by Ben Oglivie, and picked up their third run in the fourth frame on an RBI double by Marshall Edwards. In the eighth, Mark Brouhard singled and scored on a triple by Edwards, who came home as Cecil Cooper grounded out.

[DH] Angels 7, White Sox 4 (day game) / White Sox 2, Angels 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Angels and White Sox split a doubleheader, the Angels winning the opener, 7-4, for Gene Mauch's first victory as California manager, and the Pale Hose capturing the nightcap, 2-1 in 10 innings. Juan Beniquez, batting only .169 and with just one RBI entering the game, drove in four runs to spark the Angels' triumph in the lidlifter. Beniquez drove in two tallies with a bases-loaded double in the second inning and added a two-run single in the fifth frame. The second contest was tied, 1-1, when Mike Squires led off the Chicago 10th with a walk and came home with the winning run when Carlton Fisk followed with a two-bagger to left field.

Indians 7, Yankees 2 at Cleveland (day game):
Len Barker fired a six-hitter and Alan Bannister and Bo Diaz drove in two runs apiece as the Indians ended their three-game losing streak with a 7-2 triumph over the Yankees. Bannister climaxed a three-run second inning with a run-scoring double and clouted a solo homer in the sixth. Diaz capped a three-run fifth with a two-run double. Barker recorded his first career victory over the Yanks after five losses.

Twins 5, Royals 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Pushing across a run in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie, the Twins shaded the Royals, 5-4. Butch Wynegar led off the eighth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by John Castino. Gary Ward, running for Wynegar, reached third when Pete Mackanin flied out and scored on a single by Danny Goodwin. The Twins collected five consecutive singles in the fifth inning with Hosken Powell driving in two runs and Rick Sofield and Rob Wilfong one apiece.

Mariners 5, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Joe Simpson went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs to pace the Mariners to a 5-3 triumph over the Rangers. Simpson cracked a solo homer in the third inning and capped a three-run sixth with a two-run single.

A's 6, Blue Jays 5 at Toronto (day game):
A two-run rally in the top of the ninth inning enabled the A's to edge the Blue Jays, 6-5, ending Toronto's four-game winning skein. The A's trailed, 5-4, when pinch-hitter Tim Hosley began the ninth with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Dave McKay, who went to second on a single by Rickey Henderson. After Joey McLaughlin was relieved by Jerry Garvin on the hill for the Jays, a sacrifice by Dwayne Murphy moved the runners up, and McKay scored and Henderson reached third on a wild pitch. Wayne Gross then delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the decisive tally.

Dodgers 16, Reds 4 at Los Angeles (day game):
Laying down an 18-hit barrage, the Dodgers routed the Reds, 16-4. The Dodgers were behind, 4-0, going into the bottom of the third inning, then exploded for seven runs, kayoing Mario Soto. The markers came on a run-scoring single by Derrel Thomas, two-run single by Dusty Baker, an error by Reds' catcher Mike O'Berry that permitted two runs, and Pedro Guerrero's two-run single. The victory increased the Dodgers' lead in the N.L. West to 5½ games over the Reds. The Dodgers' 10th straight sellout upped their attendance to 1,026,725 for 22 games, the earliest any major league team ever reached the million mark.

Expos 5, Pirates 1 at Montreal (day game):
Spacing six hits, Steve Rogers pitched the Expos to a 5-1 verdict over the Pirates. Montreal tallied in the first inning on a solo homer by Andre Dawson and added three runs in the fifth on Rodney Scott's double and a two-run single by Gary Carter. An RBI single by Tim Wallach in the eighth frame closed out the scoring.

Mets 3, Cubs 2 at New York (day game):
Dave Kingman powered the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. The slugging first-sacker snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a double that scored Lee Mazzilli, who had walked. Kingman then unloaded his fifth homer in the last six games, a solo shot in the sixth. Randy Jones worked 6 1/3 innings to receive credit for his first victory of the season and first with the Mets. Pete Falcone relieved for his first save.

Phillies 6, Cardinals 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Phillies took over first place in the N.L. East, downing the Cardinals, 6-1, as Steve Carlton breezed to his eighth straight victory on a five-hitter. The Phils scored three runs in the fourth inning on Gary Maddox's single and a two-run single by Bob Boone. Manny Trillo drilled an RBI double in the fifth and came in on a sacrifice fly by Gary Matthews. Another sacrifice fly by Matthews produced the final marker in the seventh.

Padres 5, Braves 1 at San Diego (day game):
Luis Salazar collected four hits and Broderick Perkins drove in two runs to spark the Padres to a 5-1 triumph over the Braves. A single by Perkins drove home a first-inning run and Perkins also stroked an RBI single in the sixth. A squeeze bunt by Ozzie Smith produced a second-inning run and Juan Bonilla singled home a marker in the third. Salazar's four hits, following two hits in his last two at-bats in the previous game, gave him six straight hits and raised his average 17 points to .299.

Giants 6, Astros 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Taking advantage of Nolan Ryan's wildness, the Giants downed the Astros, 6-1. The Houston pitcher walked six, tossed three wild pitches and committed a balk before leaving after seven innings. The Giants scored a run in the first frame on three walks and two wild pitches, and broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth on Mike Sadek's two-run double. Rennie Stennett and Johnnie LeMaster stroked run-scoring singles in the seventh.
