Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Homers by Dave Winfield and Bucky Dent highlighted a 14-hit attack that carried the Yankees to a 5-3 triumph over the Indians. Dent snapped a 2-2 tie on a solo shot in the fourth inning. Winfield's blow came with the bases empty in the fifth, and Rick Cerone delivered a run-scoring single later in the frame. Doug Bird, although needing relief, received credit for his 11th straight victory. The righthander hasn't been charged with a defeat since August 16, 1978.
Tigers 4, Brewers 3 at Detroit (night game):
A single by Lynn Jones -- his fourth hit of the game -- drove home the winning run in the 12th inning as the Tigers prevailed over the Brewers, 4-3. The game was tied, 3-3, when Champ Summers opened the bottom of the 12th with a pinch-single and was replaced by pinch-runner Mick Kelleher, who moved to second on a wild pitch. After a sacrifice by Lou Whitaker advanced Kelleher to third, Jones grounded a single over second through the drawn-in infield.
Royals 3, Mariners 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Pushing across a run in the eighth inning, the Royals edged the Mariners, 3-2. Willie Wilson and Amos Otis began the K.C. eighth with singles. After Shane Rawley replaced Larry Andersen on the hill for Seattle, George Brett laced the reliever's first pitch into right field for the game-winning RBI.
Angels 3, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (night game):
Ken Forsch pitched a three-hitter and Butch Hobson and Dan Ford belted solo homers to pace the Angels to a 3-0 blanking of the Blue Jays. Hobson's clout came in the fifth inning and gave California a 1-0 lead. Ford's blast came in the ninth and the Angels added another run later in that frame on an RBI double by Butch Hobson.
Dodgers 5, Braves 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Fernando Valenzuela became the majors' first nine-game winner, pitching the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over the Braves. The rookie sensation struck out 11, taking over the major league lead in the strikeouts with 90 in 100 innings pitched. The Dodgers scored twice in the first inning on a single by Derrel Thomas and two-run homer by Rick Monday. Thomas delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth and a two-run single in the seventh.
Phillies 5, Mets 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Getting his first hit since being recalled last week from Oklahoma City (American Association), George Vukovich had a pinch-single to score Greg Gross and cap a two-run rally in the eighth inning which lifted the Phillies to a 5-4 triumph over the Mets. The Phils were behind, 4-3, going into the eighth, but tied the score on a leadoff homer by Garry Maddox. After two outs Gross singled, took third on a double by Pete Rose and scored on an infield single by Vukovich. Dave Kingman had put the Mets ahead, 4-3, in the top of the eighth with a solo homer, his sixth in the last seven games.
Reds 8, Giants 5 at San Francisco (night game):
Erupting for four runs in the ninth inning, the Reds downed the Giants, 8-5. The Reds were behind, 5-4, when Dave Collins began the ninth with a walk and raced to third on a single by Ken Griffey. After a double by Dave Concepcion scored Collins, George Foster drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Gary Lavelle then replaced Greg Minton on the mound and struck out pinch-hitter Mike Vail, but Ray Knight put the Reds ahead with an RBI single. A two-run double by Dan Driessen capped the outburst.
Cardinals 4, Expos 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Combining on a five-hitter, John Martin and Bruce Sutter hurled the Cardinals to a 4-2 triumph over the Expos. The Redbirds broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning on doubles by Glenn Brummer and Tommy Herr and a single by Garry Templeton. Templeton also had a run-scoring double in the seventh.
