Today's scores and summaries:

A's 6, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Taking advantage of Chicago misplays, the A's tallied five runs in the first inning and went on to a 6-2 triumph over the White Sox. Rickey Henderson began the game with a single, went to third on a single by Dwayne Murphy and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cliff Johnson. Murphy scored when Chet Lemon bobbled Tony Armas' single to center. Mike Heath, who got a second life when catcher Carlton Fisk dropped his pop foul, reached first on third baseman Jim Morrison's error. A single by Dave McKay then plated Armas. A two-run triple by Shooty Babitt capped the outburst.

Red Sox 4, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Dwight Evans drove in two runs with a double and homer and Dennis Eckersley tossed a four-hitter to pace the Red Sox to a 4-0 blanking of the Indians. Evans doubled home the first Sox run in the sixth frame and blasted a solo homer in the eighth. The Sox wrapped up the game in the ninth on a run-scoring double by Dave Stapleton and an RBI grounder by Glenn Hoffman.

Brewers 5, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Gorman Thomas belted a three-run homer to cap a four-run first inning and added a ninth-inning solo shot to power the Brewers to a 5-2 victory over the Tigers. The Brewers loaded the bases in the opening frame on one-out singles by Robin Yount and Cecil Cooper and a walk to Ben Oglivie. Simmons grounded out to first to produce the first tally, and Thomas followed with a round-tripper. His other circuit clout led off the ninth. The game was marred by a brawl in the third inning when Milwaukee's Oglivie was hit in the head with a pitch thrown by George Cappuzzello and charged the mound. Both benches emptied and Cappuzzello was cut on the ear in the ensuing melee. Oglivie was ejected and Cappuzzello was taken to the clubhouse for treatment.

Mariners 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Jim Anderson, the number nine hitter in the Seattle lineup, entered the game hitting .183 before collecting two singles and a double, enabling the Mariners to prevail over the Royals, 4-3. Anderson triggered a two-run third inning with a double and scored on a triple by Tom Paciorek, and then drove home two runs with a fifth-inning single.

Rangers 5, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Singles by Al Oliver and Buddy Bell drove in two runs in the eighth inning to lift the Rangers to a 5-3 victory over the Twins. The score was 3-3 when Mark Wagner lashed a one-out triple and Bill Stein received an intentional walk. A single by Oliver plated Wagner and Bell followed with a single to drive home Stein. Danny Darwin, going 7 2/3 innings, was the winning pitcher and Steve Comer finished up to record his fifth save.

Yankees 5, Orioles 3 at New York (night game):
A two-run homer by Dave Revering in the 11th inning lifted the Yankees to a 5-3 triumph over the Orioles. Rick Cerone began the bottom of the 11th with a single and went to second on a sacrifice by Graig Nettles. Revering then unloaded his first round-tripper as a member of the Yankees. The Orioles had loaded the bases in the top of the 11th with none out but failed to score. The Yanks had manufactured the deadlock in the bottom of the ninth on a walk to Dave Winfield, single by Reggie Jackson and RBI single by Nettles.

Angels 3, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (night game):
Combining on a four-hitter, Dave Frost and Andy Hassler pitched the Angels to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Blue Jays. It was Frost's first major league start since last September when he underwent shoulder surgery. California scored in the second inning when Don Baylor walked, stole second and came in on a single by Bobby Grich. Ed Ott cracked a two-run homer in the ninth.

Braves 3, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Brilliant pitching by Gaylord Perry carried the Braves to a 10-inning, 3-1 triumph over the Dodgers. The veteran righthander allowed only five hits in working the first nine frames to record his 294th career victory. Bruce Benedict opened the 10th with a single and reached second on a sacrifice by Rafael Ramirez. After Biff Pocoroba was announced as the pinch-hitter for Perry, Steve Howe replaced Dave Stewart on the hill. Bill Nahorodny then batted for Pocoroba and smacked an RBI double. Jerry Royster followed with a two-bagger to plate an insurance run.

Phillies 9, Mets 7 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pete Rose banged out two triples, drove in three runs and his three hits raised his career total to 3,621, only nine behind Stan Musial's all-time N.L. record, as the Phillies posted a 9-7 decision over the Mets. The game was tied, 6-6, going into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Phils moved ahead to stay as Larry Bowa singled, moved to third on a single by Bob Boone and scored on an RBI groundout by Rose. They added two insurance runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Boone and run-scoring triple by Rose.

Pirates 16, Cubs 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates unleashed a 19-hit attack to bury the Cubs, 16-3. Steve Nicosia, going 4-for-5, drove in four runs on a two-run single in the fourth inning, RBI double in the seventh and run-scoring single in the eighth. Dave Parker, also going 4-for-5, doubled home two runs in the first inning and stroked an RBI single in the fourth. Bill Madlock drilled a three-run double in seventh and Mike Easler also drove in three runs with an RBI single in the first, a third-inning sacrifice fly and an eighth-inning fielder's choice.

Astros 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Held to only one hit -- a fourth-inning single by Terry Puhl -- over the first eight innings, the Astros erupted for two runs in the ninth to edge the Padres, 2-1. Luis Pujols began the ninth with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a two-out single by Puhl. Craig Reynolds then followed with a triple to drive in the winning run. The Padres' run came in the first on a walk to Juan Bonilla and run-scoring double by Luis Salazar.

Giants 15, Reds 7 at San Francisco (night game):
Jerry Martin climaxed a nine-run fourth inning with a grand slam and Joe Morgan drove in three runs with a homer and bases-loaded walk in leading the Giants to a 15-7 thumping of the Reds. Martin's bases-loaded shot put the Giants ahead, 11-0. A grand slam by Ron Oester highlighted a five-run Cincinnati fifth but the Giants put the game away with a four-run sixth.

Expos 8, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Ray Burris pitched a four-hitter as the Expos breezed to an 8-1 thrashing of the Cardinals. The Expos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a homer by Andre Dawson and exploded for six runs in the third stanza. The outburst began with a one-out single by Dawson, who reached second on a groundout and scored on a single by Warren Cromartie. After Tim Wallach and Larry Parrish drew walks to load the bases, St. Louis starter Bob Shirley was given the hook and replaced by Mark Littell. Chris Speier greeted the reliever with a two-run single and, after Burris walked to load the sacks, Tim Raines capped the uprising with a three-run triple.
