Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 4, A's 2 at Chicago (night game):
Striking for two runs in the seventh inning and two in the eighth, the White Sox defeated the A's, 4-2. Oakland took the lead in the second on a two-run homer by Mitchell Page, but Chicago knotted the score in the seventh on RBI singles by Ron LeFlore and Mike Squires. Greg Luzinski singled to lead off the eighth and advanced to third when left fielder Rickey Henderson bobbled the ball and first baseman Jim Spencer failed to handle Henderson's throw to the infield. After Harold Baines was walked, Chet Lemon singled to plate pinch-runner Rusty Kuntz and advanced when right fielder Tony Armas juggled the ball. A sacrifice fly by Tony Bernazard wrapped up the scoring.

Red Sox 6, Indians 5 at Cleveland (night game):
The Red Sox leapt to a 4-0 lead, then held on for a 6-5 decision over the Indians. Boston scored three runs in the third inning on a single by Glenn Hoffman, run-scoring double by Rick Miller, triple by Jerry Remy and a wild pitch. Carl Yastrzemski doubled home Dwight Evans in the fifth, Carney Lansford scored on a sacrifice fly by Rich Gedman in the sixth and Lansford belted a home run in the eighth.

Twins 7, Rangers 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Driving in two runs apiece, Ron Jackson and Danny Goodwin sparked the Twins to a 7-3 decision over the Rangers. Minnesota, trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the third inning, went ahead to stay with a three-run uprising on a run-scoring single by Jackson, RBI forceout by John Castino and a sacrifice fly by Pete Mackanin. Goodwin stroked a two-run single in the sixth. Fernando Arroyo spaced 10 hits and did not walk anyone in recording his first complete game of the year.

Yankees 12, Orioles 3 at New York (night game):
Recording their highest run total of the season, the Yankees zonked the Orioles, 12-3, to conclude the sweep of the three-game series. Jerry Mumphrey cracked three doubles and Oscar Gamble, Dave Winfield, Bobby Murcer and Dave Revering drove home two runs apiece. The Yanks scored four unearned runs in the second inning on a two-out error by third baseman Doug DeCinces, RBI single by Willie Randolph and two-run single by Gamble. Rookie pitcher Gene Nelson yielded a leadoff single to Al Bumbry in the first inning, then held the Orioles hitless until they ended a 22-inning scoreless drought with a solo homer by Rich Dauer in the ninth.

Pirates 5, Cubs 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dale Berra's bloop single scored Lee Lacy, who had tripled, and enabled the Pirates to overcome the Cubs, 5-4 in 10 innings. Dave Parker drove in three runs for the Bucs with a homer and single. Bobby Bonds, making his first appearance with the Cubs after being acquired from the Rangers' organization, suffered a broken little finger on his right hand when he fell trying to make a catch in the first inning.

Padres 7, Astros 5 at San Diego (day game):
With Randy Bass driving in four runs on a single, double and homer, the Padres downed the Astros, 7-5, for their first victory over Houston in six games this season. Bass, benched for more than a month because of a batting slump, led a 13-hit attack that ended Joe Niekro's five-game winning streak.

Cardinals 4, Expos 1 at St. Louis (day game):
Dane Iorg went 3-for-3, drove in one run and scored twice to pace the Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over the Expos. Iorg doubled and scored on a single by Mike Ramsey in the second, stroked an RBI single in the third and singled and tallied on a single by Sixto Lezcano in the sixth. Orlando Sanchez knocked in the other St. Louis run with a single in the second stanza. Lary Sorensen, who had dropped his last four decisions, scattered seven singles in pitching his third complete game.
