Orioles 4, Angels 1 at California (day game):
Scattering six hits, Dennis Martinez pitched the Orioles to a 4-1 decision over the Angels. Eddie Murray broke a 1-1 tie with a solo homer in the fourth inning, and the Orioles added a run in the fifth on a walk to Mark Belanger and run-scoring double by Al Bumbry. The final tally came in the seventh on a double by Doug DeCinces and single by Rick Dempsey.

Tigers 3, Twins 0 at Detroit (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Tigers blanked the Twins, 3-0, on a five-hitter by Milt Wilcox. Detroit scored all its runs in the seventh inning. Tom Brookens singled and was sacrificed to second by Lance Parrish. After John Wockenfuss was walked intentionally, Al Cowens singled to score Brookens and an errant throw by left fielder Rick Sofield enabled Wockenfuss to reach third and Cowens to go to second. Wockenfuss scored as Bill Fahey grounded out and a triple by Lou Whitaker plated Cowens.

Royals 7, Brewers 1 at Kansas City (day game):
George Brett collected three singles, drove in one run and scored another to pace the Royals to a 7-1 victory over the Brewers. Willie Wilson began the K.C. first inning with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Brett. The Royals added three runs in the third on a triple by Cesar Geronimo, RBI groundout by Wilson, single by Brett, walk to Amos Otis and two-run double by Lee May. John Wathan delivered a run-scoring groundout in the sixth and drilled an RBI three-bagger and came home on a sacrifice fly by Geronimo in the eighth.

Yankees 3, White Sox 1 at New York (day game):
The Yankees won their seventh straight game, downing the White Sox, 3-1, as Rich Gossage registered his 16th save. The Bronx Bombers tallied twice in the fourth frame. They loaded the bases on a single by Lou Piniella, double by Dave Winfield and a walk to Bob Watson. Graig Nettles drove in the first run with a groundout and, after Barry Foote walked to reload the sacks, Aurelio Rodriguez also walked to force home a run. The Yanks picked up an insurance marker in the sixth on a wild pitch.

A's 4, Red Sox 3 at Oakland (day game):
A homer by Dwayne Murphy in the 11th inning lifted the A's to a 4-3 triumph over the Red Sox. The game-winning blow came with one out. The A's had deadlocked the contest in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Murphy and two-run round-tripper by Tony Armas with two out.

Mariners 5, Indians 4 at Seattle (day game):
Pushing across a run in the 11th inning, the Mariners edged the Indians, 5-4. With one out in the 11th, Julio Cruz extended his batting streak to 10 games with a single and stole second. After Lenny Randle received an intentional pass, Tom Paciorek delivered a single to plate Cruz. The Tribe had rallied to tie the game in the ninth on a two-run pinch-single by Ron Hassey. Cruz tied a major league fielding record for most chances in a nine-inning game with 18 and also had another chance in extra innings, leaving him one short of the mark for most chances in an extra inning contest. Cruz shares the nine-inning record with Terry Harmon of the 1971 Phillies.

Rangers 9, Blue Jays 0 at Texas (night game):
Buddy Bell clouted a grand slam and Al Oliver collected four hits incuding three doubles to support the four-hit pitching of Danny Darwin as the Rangers whitewashed the Blue Jays, 9-0. Texas took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Jim Sundberg and upped their margin to 3-0 in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Sundberg and sacrifice fly by Mario Mendoza. Bell's circuit swat came in the eighth after an error by Roy Lee Jackson, single by Bump Wills, an infield out and an intentional walk to Oliver.

Phillies 7, Braves 5 at Atlanta (day game):
Pete Rose drove in two runs with a single and sacrifice fly and moved within four hits of tying Stan Musial's league record for hits in sparking the Phillies to a 7-5 verdict over the Braves. The Phils overcame a 3-1 deficit in the fifth on RBI singles by Rose and Mike Schmidt and a sacrifice fly by Gary Matthews. They recorded two markers in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Rose and a run-scoring single by Lonnie Smith.

Dodgers 7, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Bob Welch registered 11 strikeouts in blanking the Cubs, 7-0, to end the Dodgers' four-game losing streak. The Dodgers scored in their first turn at bat on a single by Ken Landreaux and two-run homer by Dusty Baker, and boosted the lead to 3-0 in the second on a squeeze bunt by Derrel Thomas. Ron Cey hit an RBI groundout in the fourth inning and the Dodgers got run-scoring singles from Thomas in the sixth, Mike Scioscia in the seventh and Steve Garvey in the eighth.

Reds 2, Expos 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
One-hit pitching by Bruce Berenyi enabled the Reds to beat the Expos, 2-0, completing the three-game series sweep. The lone hit off Berenyi was a two-out single by Andre Dawson in the fourth inning. Joe Nolan belted a solo homer in the second inning and the Reds got their other run in the the third when Dave Collins doubled, took third on a wild pickoff attempt by Ray Burris and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ron Oester.

Mets 3, Astros 1 at Houston (day game):
Mike Scott and Neil Allen combined on a six-hitter to carry the Mets to a 3-1 victory over the Astros. The game was scoreless when Hubie Brooks and Alex Trevino began the seventh inning with singles. Doug Flynn then hit a comebacker to Bob Knepper, who threw to third for the forceout on Brooks. Third baseman Art Howe attempted to double Flynn at first base but threw the ball into right field, allowing Trevino to score and Flynn to reach third, from where he tallied on a sacrifice fly by Scott. Dave Kingman provided an insurance run in the eighth with his 12th homer of the season.

Pirates 3, Giants 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Bill Madlock smashed a tie-breaking homer in the sixth inning as the Pirates edged the Giants, 3-2. The Bucs scored twice in the first inning when Lee Lacy reached first on a two-out error by third baseman Enos Cabell, Madlock walked and Mike Easler drilled a two-run double. Darrell Evans led off the Giants' fifth with a round-tripper and Joe Morgan hit a solo homer in the sixth.

Padres 5, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (day game):
Gene Richards drove in four runs with a homer and single and Chris Welsh spaced eight hits as the Padres posted a 5-1 triumph over the Cardinals. Richards put the Padres ahead, 3-0, in the third inning by clouting a three-run homer, and he delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth. The loss ended the Redbirds' four-game winning skein.
