After Eddie Murray was walked intentionally, John Lowenstein delivered a single to plate the winning tally. The Birds scored twice in the first inning on consecutive homers by Singleton and Murray and then were held hitless until the 12th.

White Sox 7, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Harold Baines knocked in three runs to spark the White Sox to a 7-1 victory over the Red Sox. Baines drove home one tally with a first-inning double and added a two-run homer in the seventh. The ChiSox registered twice in the second stanza on a two-run single by Mike Squires. Greg Luzinski blasted a two-run homer in the ninth.

Brewers 5, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
A three-run eruption in the top of the 13th inning lifted the Brewers to a 5-2 victory over the Indians. Marshall Edwards opened the 13th with a single and when Roy Howell's sacrifice bunt was thrown into center field by catcher Bo Diaz, Edwards reached third and Howell went to second. After Cecil Cooper drew an intentional walk, Edwards scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Oglivie. The other two runners advanced on the long fly and Gorman Thomas followed with a two-run single.

Tigers 4, Blue Jays 3 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Blue Jays, 4-3, dealing Toronto its 12th straight loss over both halves of the season. The Tigers loaded the bases with none out in the ninth on consecutive walks to Kirk Gibson and Tom Brookens and a bunt single by Lou Whitaker. After Ricky Peters struck out, Alan Trammell drilled the game-winning single past third.

Twins 6, A's 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Exploding for six runs in the fifth inning, the Twins downed the A's, 6-2. The Twins opened the fifth with consecutive singles by Danny Goodwin and Butvh Wynegar. After a sacrifice by Ron Jackson, both runners scored on a single by Hosken Powell. Rob Wilfong then singled, Micjey Hatcher reached first on an error as Powell scored, and Roy Smalley walked. Glenn Adams then singled home Wilfong and Hatcher, and John Castino plated the final marker with a double.

Tommy John hurled seven innings of shutout ball, allowing only two hits as the Yankees began their second season with a 2-0 whitewashing of the Rangers. The Bronx Bombers got only three hits but two were homers -- by Graig Nettles in the second inning and Oscar Gamble in the fourth.

Mariners 5, Angels 4 at Seattle (night game):
A single by Jeff Burroughs drove in the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning as the Mariners opened the new season with a 5-4 triumph over the Angels. The Mariners' Julio Cruz, attempting to set the A.L. consecutive stolen base record, was thrown out by Ed Ott on a pitchout as he tried to pilfer second base in the seventh. Cruz had tied Willie Wilson's record of 32 straight thefts.

Mets 7, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
In the first game played after the end of the strike, the Mets outlasted the Cubs, 7-5 in 13 innings. New York took a 4-1 lead in the 11th on a three-run homer by Dave Kingman but the Cubs tied it in the bottom of the frame with a two-out, two-run double by Bobby Bonds being the key blow. After each team scored in the 12th, the Mets took the lead for keeps in the 13th on a one-out double by Joel Youngblood, intentional walk to Ron Hodges, RBI single by Ellis Valentine and a run-scoring forceout.
