Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 4, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Sparked by the hitting of Greg Luzinski and Bill Almon, the White Sox downed the Red Sox, 4-2. The score was 2-2 when Almon led off the seventh inning with a single and, two outs later, reached third on a single by Carlton Fisk. Luzinski, who had doubled and tripled earlier, then cracked a two-bagger to plate Almon. Almon provided insurance with a leadoff homer in the ninth.

[DH] Brewers 6, Indians 5 (day game) / Brewers 6, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
The Brewers swept a doubleheader from the Indians, taking the first game, 6-5, and capturing the nightcap, 6-1. A solo homer by Roy Howell snapped a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning of the opener and Robin Yount, who had tied the game with a bases-empty round-tripper in the fourth, singled home Milwaukee's final run in the seventh. Cecil Cooper hit two solo homers in the second game. His first shot came in the first inning and the second broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth. Cooper was 7-for-9 in the twin-bill, with 16 total bases.

Blue Jays 6, Tigers 4 at Detroit (night game):
Otto Velez and Buck Martinez each belted three-run homers in the first inning to spur the Blue Jays to a 6-4 triumph over the Tigers, Toronto's first victory since May 30. Velez connected for the circuit following singles by Lloyd Moseby and Barry Bonnell, and Martinez' clout was preceded by singles by Al Woods and Damaso Garcia. Juan Berenguer, acquired by the Jays on waivers from Kansas City the previous day, was the winning pitcher.

A's 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
Scoring six runs in the first two innings, the A's held on to edge the Twins, 6-5, as Mike Norris picked up his ninth victory of the campaign. The A's grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first frame on a run-scoring single by Dwayne Murphy and an RBI double by Tony Armas, and added four more tallies in the second stanza on RBI singles by Fred Stanley and Rickey Henderson, a squeeze bunt by Wayne Gross and a balk.

Rangers 1, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Four Texas pitchers combined on a four-hitter to boost the Rangers to a 1-0 blanking of the Yankees. The game's lone run came in the opening frame when Bump Wills, Al Oliver and Buddy Bell stroked consecutive one-out singles. Rick Honeycutt, who hurled the first 5 1/3 innings, upped his record to 7-1.

Mariners 4, Angels 1 at Seattle (night game):
Allowing just five hits in eight innings, Jim Beattie notched his first victory of the season as the Mariners posted a 4-1 triumph over the Angels. A two-run double by Tom Paciorek gave the Mariners a 2-1 lead in the third frame and they added another marker in the fifth on singles by Rick Auerbach and Lenny Randle and a double-play grounder by Bruce Bochte. Richie Zisk belted a solo homer in the eighth. Angels second baseman Bobby Grich extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

Mets 4, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Rallying in the late innings, the Mets downed the Cubs, 4-2. New York trailed, 2-1, when Dave Kingman led off the eighth with a walk and raced to third on a single by Ellis Valentine. After Dick Tidrow replaced Lee Smith on the hill for the Cubs, Hubie Brooks delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Valentine took second on the play and, one out later, scored the go-ahead run on a single by Doug Flynn. Brooks provided an insurance marker in the ninth with an RBI double. Mets reliever Ray Searage received credit for his first major league victory.

Reds 7, Dodgers 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run homer by Dan Driessen climaxed a four-run rally in the seventh inning that lifted the Reds to a 7-6 triumph over the Dodgers. Cincinnati trailed, 6-3, going into the seventh, when Ken Griffey led off with a single. Dave Concepcion and George Foster followed with singles to produce one run before Driessen connected for the circuit. Dusty Baker hit a two-run homer for L.A. in the first and Concepcion drilled a solo shot for the Reds in the third.

Pirates 6, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Exploding for five runs in the ninth inning, the Pirates registered a 6-3 victory over the Expos. The Bucs were behind, 2-1, in the ninth but tied the game on consecutive doubles by Tim Foli and Dave Parker. A single by Bill Madlock put runners on first and third and brought on Elias Sosa in relief of Woodie Fryman. Mike Easler then drove in the go-ahead run with a single that plated Parker. John Milner capped the rally with a three-run pinch-homer.

Phillies 6, Cardinals 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Backup catcher Keith Moreland was the star of the game as the Phillies gained a 6-5 victory over the Cardinals in 10 innings. Moreland, who entered the contest as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning, drove home the tying run with a single and then drove in the winning run in the 10th. The decisive rally in the 10th began with a single by Gary Matthews. Larry Bowa followed with a single that sent Matthews to third and Bowa reached second on the throw to third. After Lonnie Smith was walked intentionally and Bruce Sutter relieved Jim Kaat on the mound for the Redbirds, Moreland lashed a single to right-center.

Braves 5, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Gaylord Perry gained credit for his 295th career victory as the Braves downed the Padres, 5-1. Atlanta took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Bob Horner and boosted their margin to 3-0 in the second on a two-run triple by Rufino Linares. An error by San Diego third baseman Luis Salazar gave the Braves a run in the fifth frame and Atlanta got a ninth-inning tally on a run-scoring single by Glenn Hubbard.

Giants 3, Astros 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Tom Griffin scattered six hits in 8 1/3 innings in pitching the Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Astros. The veteran righthander came within two outs of becoming the first hurler to toss a complete game since the strike. He was taken out in the ninth after a one-out double by Jose Cruz. Greg Minton came on to notch his 10th save. Joe Morgan, Darrell Evans and Larry Herndon each drove in a run as the Giants snapped a six-game losing streak that started before the strike.
