The Royals and Orioles split a doubleheader, K.C. winning the opener, 10-0, and the Birds capturing the nightcap, 4-3. The Royals grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the first game on a two-run double by Hal McRae and put the game away with a five-run eighth that was highlighted by Frank White's second career grand slam. K.C. jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on a leadoff homer by Willie Wilson and a two-run shot by Amos Otis. The Orioles tied the contest on a two-run homer by Eddie Murray in the bottom of the first and a solo blast by Rick Dempsey in the second, and pushed across the winning marker in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Terry Crowley.
Red Sox 8, White Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Laying down a barrage of six homers -- two by Joe Rudi -- the Red Sox routed the White Sox, 8-1, as rookie Bob Ojeda pitched the first complete game in the majors since the resumption of the season. Rudi connected for a solo shot in the sixth inning and a two-run belt in the seventh. Dwight Evans led off the third with a round-tripper and Gary Allenson and Dave Stapleton hit for the circuit in the fifth. Jim Rice led off the sixth with a four-ply blast.
Indians 9, Brewers 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Rick Manning drove in three runs with a two-run homer and a single to pace the Indians to a 9-4 decision over the Brewers. The Tribe took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Andre Thornton and RBI single by Alan Bannister. Manning delivered his circuit clout in the seventh. Len Barker allowed seven hits before tiring in the ninth but received credit for his sixth win of the season.
Blue Jays 4, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
The Blue Jays won their second game of the new season, edging the Tigers, 4-3. The Jays scored twice in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Al Woods and a bases-loaded suicide squeeze bunt by Damaso Garcia, and picked up their other two markers in the sixth stanza on a sacrifice fly by Garcia and run-scoring single by Danny Ainge. Dave Stieb pitched the first six innings to notch the victory.
Twins 4, A's 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Rallying for two runs in the seventh inning, the Twins shaded the A's, 4-3. Butch Wynegar and Gary Ward began Minnesota's seventh with singles and Hosken Powell followed with a single to score Ron Jackson, pinch-running for Wynegar. After Rob Wilfong lined into a double play, Mickey Hatcher stroked a single to register Ward with the decisive tally.
Yankees 5, Rangers 4 at New York (day game):
A two-run homer by Graig Nettles with two out in the sixth inning lifted the Yankees to a 5-4 decision over the Rangers. Nettles' blast came off Fergie Jenkins, who was making his second relief appearance of the season, and was preceded by a one-out single by Reggie Jackson. Dave LaRoche, who pitched 2 2/3 innings, was credited with the win while George Frazier earned the save.
Angels 4, Mariners 1 at Seattle (day game):
Bobby Grich drove in all four California runs with a pair of homers, including a three-run shot in the 11th inning, to power the Angels to a 4-1 victory over the Mariners. Grich's first homer came in the second inning and extended his hitting streak to 16 games. His game-winning blast in the 11th followed a double by Rick Burleson, an intentional walk to Fred Lynn and a forceout.
Mets 7, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Erupting for three runs in the top of the 10th inning, the Mets rolled to their third consecutive triumph over the Cubs, 7-4. With the game tied, 4-4, Dave Kingman opened the 10th with a fly ball that bounced between center fielder Bobby Bonds and right fielder Hector Cruz and rolled to the wall for a triple. Ellis Valentine then tripled over Bonds' head to plate Kingman. A single by Hubie Brooks drove in Valentine. Brooks took second on a passed ball and came in on a single by Alex Trevino. The Cubs had tied the game in the seventh on a two-run pinch-homer by Mike Lum.
Dodgers 8, Reds 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Cincinnati ace Tom Seaver was shelled from the parapet in the fourth inning as the Dodgers rallied for three runs en route to an 8-5 triumph over the Reds. L.A. trailed, 4-3, in the fourth, but tied the game on a pinch-double by Jay Johnstone and RBI single by Davey Lopes. Lopes took third on an error by Sam Mejias and scored on a single by Ken Landreaux. After Dusty Baker singled Landreaux to third, Paul Moskau replaced Seaver and Ron Cey scored Landreaux with a sacrifice fly. Lopes provided insurance with a two-run homer in the seventh.
Cardinals 11, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A pair of homers by George Hendrick highlighted the Cardinals' 11-3 rout of the Phillies. The Cards were behind, 3-2, in the fifth inning when Keith Hernandez walked, took third on a single by Dane Iorg and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ken Oberkfell. Iorg, who moved up on a walk, tallied on a single by Orlando Sanchez. Hendrick cracked a two-run homer in the seventh and Hernandez and Hendrick homered back-to-back to trigger a five-run ninth.
Expos 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Andre Dawson went 4-for-4 with two singles, a triple and a homer as the Expos posted a 3-2 triumph over the Pirates. The Expos scored twice in the second inning on a triple by Gary Carter, single by Warren Cromartie and run-scoring double by Mike Phillips. Dawson led off the sixth with a circuit clout. Ray Burris, who worked the first five innings, was credited with the victory.
Braves 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Braves pushed across a run in the top of the 11th to down the Padres, 4-3. With the score 3-3, Brian Asselstine opened the 11th with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rufino Linares, who was safe at first when pitcher John Curtis bobbled the ball for an error. Asselstine advanced to third when Claudell Washington forced Linares at second and scored when Eddie Miller forced Washington. Washington injured his ankle on the play and was carried from the field on a stretcher.
Astros 5, Giants 4 at San Francisco (day game):
A pinch-single by Denny Walling in the eighth inning drove in the winning run as the Astros prevailed over the Giants, 5-4. The score was 4-4 when Luis Pujols opened the eighth with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Kiko Garcia, who moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a sacrifice and scored on Walling's blow. The Giants had rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Jack Clark, two-run homer by Darrell Evans and solo blast by Jerry Martin.
