Orioles 2, Royals 1 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles scored two runs in the first inning and made them stand up behind the hurling of three pitchers to edge the Royals, 2-1. The Birds' runs came when they loaded the bases on singles by Jim Dwyer and Ken Singleton and a walk to Terry Crowley, and Doug DeCinces followed with a two-run single. Mike Flanagan, who allowed only three hits in 5 2/3 innings, notched his eighth win in 12 decisions.

Red Sox 9, White Sox 6 at Boston (day game):
Carl Yastrzemski drove in three runs with a homer and double to lead the Red Sox to a 9-6 victory over the White Sox. Yaz ripped a two-run homer in the first inning and drilled a run-scoring double in the third. The Bosox chased Reggie Patterson, making his big league debut, with a four-run second frame, the last two tallies coming in on a wild pitch and a passed ball.

Brewers 8, Indians 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Cecil Cooper banged out four hits to pace a 15-hit attack that carried the Brewers to an 8-5 victory over the Indians. Roy Howell and Cooper lashed solo homers in the first inning and Cooper doubled and scored on a single by Ben Oglivie in the third. Run-scoring singles by Thad Bosley and Oglivie highlighted a three-run fourth. Cooper finished the five-game series with 13 hits in 23 at-bats, good for 26 total bases.

Yankees 3, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Four New York pitchers allowed one hit apiece in hurling the Yankees to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Tigers. The Yanks scored twice in the first inning on RBI singles by Oscar Gamble and Graig Nettles and once in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Willie Randolph. Yankees starter Ron Guidry struck out eight and walked three in five innings to gain the victory.

Mariners 11, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Riche Zisk hit a three-run homer and Tom Paciorek ripped a triple, double and single to pace the Mariners to an 11-1 rout of the Twins. Jerry Narron doubled home the first Seattle run in the second inning and Jeff Burroughs doubled home two more in the fourth. Zisk's blast capped a four-run fifth.

Cubs 6, Mets 1 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by Jody Davis and Jerry Morales powered the Cubs to a 6-1 triumph over the Mets. Davis blasted a three-run round-tripper in the fourth inning with Steve Henderson on base via a walk and Bobby Bonds aboard via a single. Steve Dillard led off Chicago's fifth with a triple and scored on a pinch-homer by Morales. Doug Bird, making his first start since being acquired from the Yankees for Rick Reuschel, received credit for the victory.

Braves 9, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Taking advantage of seven walks and four Los Angeles errors, the Braves blasted the Dodgers, 9-1, as Tommy Boggs, who hadn't won a game since April 21, snapped his nine-game losing skein with three-hit pitching over the first six innings. Gene Garber finished up to earn his first save. Chris Chambliss cracked a two-run homer for the Braves in the eighth.

Cardinals 5, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Cardinals snapped a 10-game losing streak at the hands of their nemesis Steve Carlton in beating the Phillies, 5-2. The Redbirds loaded the bases in the second inning on walks to George Hendrick and Gene Tenace wrapped around a single by Sixto Lezcano. A single by Mike Ramsey drove in one run, a single by Garry Templeton plated two more and a single by Tommy Herr capped the outburst. John Martin hurled the first seven frames to puck up the win and Bruce Sutter came on to record his 13th save, tops in the N.L.

Expos 7, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A grand slam by Andre Dawson highlighted a six-run seventh inning that lifted the Expos to a 7-2 victory over the Pirates. The big inning began with one out when Larry Parrish and Mike Phillips singled. Steve Rogers, attempting to bunt, hit into a forceout. Tim Raines doubled home Phillips and Rodney Scott walked to load the bases. Victor Cruz relieved Luis Tiant on the hill for the Pirates and Dawson hit the first pitch for his first career grand slam. Gary Carter hit the next pitch for another round-tripper. Immediately after the game, Cruz was sent to the minor leagues.

Padres 9, Astros 1 at San Diego (day game):
Chris Welsh and Gary Lucas combined on a six-hitter and Terry Kennedy drove in three runs and scored two others to help the Padres end their three-game losing streak with a 9-1 pasting of the Astros. The Padres tallied twice in the third inning on an error by Astros' left fielder Jose Cruz and an RBI single by Juan Bonilla, and added another pair in the fourth on a run-scoring double by Kennedy and RBI single by Luis Salazar. Kennedy also singled home two runs in the seventh.
