Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 5, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Despite committing four errors, the White Sox posted a 5-3 triumph over the Orioles. The score was 2-2 in the fifth inning when Chet Lemon was hit by a pitch. He went to third on a single by Tony Bernazard and tallied on a single by Ron LeFlore. A single by Mike Squires plated Bernazard. Chicago registered an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single by Bill Almon.

Royals 4, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Scattering seven hits over six innings, Mike Jones recorded his first major league victory as the Royals defeated the Indians, 4-1. K.C. broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth frame on a solo homer by Willie Aikens. Amos Otis delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Hal McRae belted a bases-empty round-tripper in the eighth.

Tigers 1, Yankees 0 at Detroit (night game):
Milt Wilcox permitted just three hits in 8 2/3 innings as the Tigers snapped a three-game losing skein with a 1-0 blanking of the Yankees. The lone tally of the game came in the third when Lou Whitaker singled with one out, moved to second on a walk to Al Cowens and raced home on a single by Alan Trammell.

[DH] Twins 6, Mariners 1 (night game) / Mariners 13, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins and Mariners divided a doubleheader, the Twins winning the lidlifter, 6-1, and the Mariners capturing the nightcap, 13-3, as Jeff Burroughs clouted three homers and drove in six runs. In the first game, Rob Wilfong gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the first inning, and the Twins hiked the margin to 2-0 in the second on a run-scoring forceout by Hosken Powell. Albert Williams, giving up just four hits in six innings, was the winning pitcher and Jerry Koosman cleaned up to record the save. In the second game, Burroughs capped a four-run first inning with a three-run shot after a single by Richie Zisk delivered the first tally of the frame. He drilled a two-run smash in the fifth and added a solo sock in the seventh.

A's 4, Angels 2 at Oakland (night game):
A two-run homer by Dwayne Murphy in the 10th inning lifted the A's to a 4-2 decision over the Angels. Keith Drumright began the bottom of the 10th with a single and was sacrificed to second by Rob Picciolo. After Rickey Henderson grounded out, Murphy swatted his game-winning blast. The Angels had tied the game in the eighth on a solo homer by Bobby Grich and sacrifice fly by Butch Hobson.

Rangers 3, Red Sox 2 at Texas (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Rangers edged the Red Sox, 3-2. The Sox had tied the contest in the top of the ninth due to an error by Rangers left fielder Billy Sample, who then began the bottom of the frame with a single. Sample advanced to second on a sacrifice by Leon Roberts and scored the game-winning run on a single by Jim Sundberg.

Blue Jays 5, Brewers 4 at Toronto (night game):
A run-scoring double by Ernie Whitt claimaxed a two-run rally in the seventh inning that carried the Blue Jays to a 5-4 triumph over the Brewers despite two homers by Milwaukee's Gorman Thomas. The Jays were trailing, 4-3, when Lloyd Moseby led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and, one out later, scored on a pinch single by Greg Wells. After Wells was caught stealing, Al Woods drew a walk and Rickey Keeton replaced Jamie Easterly on the mound for the Brewers. Barry Bonnell then walked and Whitt followed with a two-bagger into the left-center field gap.

[DH] Giants 4, Reds 0 (night game) / Reds 7, Giants 6 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Giants and Reds split a twin-bill, the Giants taking the opener, 4-0, as Ed Whitson became the first N.L pitcher to go the route since the strike, and the Reds won the second game, 7-6 in 10 innings. The Giants scoring in the opener came on an RBI double by Darrell Evans in the first inning, RBI single by Jeff Leonard and run-scoring fielder's choice grounder by Joe Morgan in the sixth, and a solo homer by Jack Clark in the seventh. The score of the second game was 6-6 when Al Holland hit Dave Concepcion with a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 10th. Concepcion then stole second and George Foster was intentionally walked. After two successive forceouts left Foster at third, Sam Mejias hit a high bouncer that shortstop Johnnie LeMaster was unable to handle and Foster scored the winning run.

Dodgers 5, Braves 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run outburst in the fourth inning triggered the Dodgers to a 5-0 victory over the Braves, ending Atlanta's four-game winning streak. Braves starter John Montefusco was kayoed in the fourth when he gave up five singles and three runs. The tallies crossed the plate on an RBI single by Ron Cey, run-scoring single by Mike Scioscia and sacrifice fly by Bill Russell. Pedro Guerrero stroked a two-run single in the fifth. Dave Goltz hurled the first five frames to get the win while Alejandro Pena completed the shutout to earn his first save since being called up from Albuquerque (Pacifice Coast) two days previously.

Cardinals 3, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
The Cardinals downed the Expos, 3-1, to win their first game in Montreal this season and only their second triumph in Canada over a two-year span covering 13 games. Sixto Lezcano drove in two runs and newcomer Joaquin Andujar hurled five strong innings to raise his career record against Montreal to 8-0. Lezcano drilled a solo homer in the second inning and received credit for an RBI in the fourth when Montreal shortstop Chris Speier failed to come up with his hot smash with runners on first and third. A sacrifice fly by Gene Tenace produced the final Redbird run. Bruce Sutter pitched the last two innings to notch his 14th save.

Phillies 8, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
Keith Moreland drove in five runs with a single and homer and Mike Schmidt belted his 300th career homer to lead the Phillies to an 8-4 victory over the Mets. Moreland singled in two runs in the first inning and drilled a three-run round-tripper in the fifth following one-out walks to Schmidt and Gary Matthews. Schmidt's shot came in the third after Pete Rose led off the frame with a single.

Astros 5, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Allowing only two hits over six innings, Nolan Ryan picked up the victory as the Astros downed the Padres, 5-1. The score was 1-1 when the Astros loaded the bases in the second inning on singles by Luis Pujols and Dickie Thon and a walk to Ryan. A single by Tony Scott scored two runs and a third tally registered on a pair of errors by Padres catcher Terry Kennedy.
