Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, White Sox 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Three-hit pitching by Dennis Martinez and a grand slam by Doug DeCinces carried the Orioles to a 4-0 blanking of the White Sox. DeCinces' blast came in the fourth inning following a walk to Ken Singleton, single by Eddie Murray and a walk to Terry Crowley.

Royals 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Erupting for four runs in the fourth inning, the Royals went on to a 5-3 victory over the Indians. K.C. loaded the bases in the fourth on singles by Amos Otis, Frank White and Darryl Motley. After Jamie Quirk forced Otis at the plate, White scored on a wild pitch and Rance Mulliniks walked to reload the sacks. Willie Wilson then stroked a two-run single and Mulliniks tallied the final marker as U.L. Washington forced Wilson at second.

Tigers 8, Yankees 5 at Detroit (night game):
In a free-swinging contest, the Tigers outslugged the Yankees, 8-5. The Yanks took a 2-0 lead on a first-inning RBI single by Reggie Jackson and a third-inning solo homer by Lou Piniella, but the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer by Al Cowens. Bob Watson put N.Y. ahead with a solo homer in the fourth, but the Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI triple by Richie Hebner and a sacrifice fly by Stan Papi. The Tigers added two more tallies in the fifth on a pinch-hit run-scoring single by Kirk Gibson and RBI infield out by Lance Parrish.

Mariners 6, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Jim Anderson had three hits, including a pair of run-scoring two-baggers, and Glenn Abbott and Bryan Clark combined on a four-hitter as the Mariners posted a 6-0 whitewashing of the Twins. Anderson doubled home Joe Simpson in the third inning for the first run of the game and doubled home Simpson again in the fifth frame. Simpson scored his third run in the seventh on an error by Twins third baseman John Castino and delivered an RBI forceout in the eighth.

A's 8, Angels 7 at Oakland (day game):
A solo homer by Mike Heath with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning enabled the A's to outlast the Angels, 8-7. California had manufactured a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by John Harris and took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th on Bobby Grich's second homer of the game. Oakland came back in the bottom of that frame on a sacrifice fly by Keith Drumright.

Red Sox 5, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
The Red Sox tallied twice in the top of the 10th inning to down the Rangers, 5-3. The score was 3-3 when Dwight Evans opened the 10th frame with a base on balls. Jim Rice then hit what appeared to be a double-play grounder to Bump Wills at second base but Wills booted the ball, allowing Evans to reach third as Rice was safe at first. Carl Yastrzemski then stroked a single through the drawn-in infield to produce the go-ahead run, and another run scored on a fielder's choice groundout off the bat of Carney Lansford.

Blue Jays 4, Brewers 3 at Toronto (day game):
Damaso Garcia collected four hits, including the tie-breaking RBI single in the eighth inning, to pace the Blue Jays to a 4-3 triumph over the Brewers, Toronto's fourth consecutive victory. The score was 3-3 when Greg Wells began the bottom of the eighth with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Al Woods and raced home on a single by Garcia. A pinch-single by George Bell gave Toronto a 3-2 lead in the sixth but the Brewers tied the score in the seventh on an RBI double by Thad Bosley.

Cubs 4, Pirates 3 at Chicago (day game):
An error by Pittsburgh second baseman Phil Garner permitted the winning run to score, giving the Cubs a 4-3 triumph over the Pirates in a 15-inning marathon. The game was deadlocked, 3-3, when Jody Davis began the bottom of the 15th with a single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Ty Waller. Steve Dillard then hit a grounder than went through Garner's legs and Davis scored on the play.

Giants 5, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Homers by Jack Clark and Jeff Leonard helped power the Giants to a 5-2 victory over the Reds. Clark drilled a two-run shot to snap a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, and Leonard cracked a solo clout in the second stanza and added a three-bagger in the eighth. Milt May delivered run-scoring singles in the sixth and eighth. Doyle Alexander pitched the first eight innings to get the win while Greg Minton came on in the ninth to register his 11th save.

Braves 6, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Knocking out Jerry Reuss with a three-run rally in the seventh inning, the Braves prevailed over the Dodgers, 6-4. Doubles by Chris Chambliss and Bruce Benedict accounted for Atlanta's first run in the second inning and the Braves picked up an unearned marker in the sixth on singles by Bob Horner and Dale Murphy and a wild throw by Reuss. The seventh-inning runs came on a run-scoring single by Rufino Linares and a two-run double by Murphy. Steve Bedrosian received credit for his first major league victory and Al Hrabosky recorded his first save of the season.

Mets 3, Phillies 1 at New York (night game):
A trio of pitchers combined on a three-hitter to give the Mets a 3-1 triumph over the Phillies. The score was 1-1 when Lee Mazzilli led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and scored on a double by John Stearns. After Stearns was sacrificed to third by Doug Flynn, pinch-hitter Rusty Staub sealed the victory with a sacrifice fly.

Astros 5, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Don Sutton allowed only three hits in eight innings and Terry Puhl cracked a three-run homer to lead the Astros to a 5-0 whitewashing of the Padres. The Astros tallied in the opening frame on a two-out single by Puhl and a triple by Jose Cruz. Puhl's circuit clout came in the third with Sutton and Craig Reynolds aboard via singles.
