Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 8, Orioles 7 at Baltimore (day game):
Pushing across a run in the top of the 10th inning, the White Sox outlasted the Orioles, 8-7, despite two homers and 6 RBIs by Baltimore's Eddie Murray. Murray clouted a grand slam in the third inning and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run shot. Harold Baines began the 10th with a double, was sacrificed to third by Chet Lemon and registered the game-winning run on a single by Tony Bernazard.

[DH] Royals 6, Indians 2 (day game) / Indians 8, Royals 6 at Cleveland (day game):
The Royals and Indians divided a doubleheader, the Royals winning the first game, 6-2, and the Indians capturing the second contest, 8-6. K.C. got starter Larry Gura all the runs he needed in the second inning of the opener when Amos Otis led off with a single, Lee May followed with another single and Frank White then belted a three-run homer. The Royals added three more markers in the seventh on an RBI double by U.L. Washington, sacrifice fly by George Brett and run-scoring single by Otis. A three-run rally in the seventh inning lifted the Tribe to their triumph in the nightcap. The winning surge began with a one-out single by Jorge Orta, who scored on a double by Mike Hargrove. A pinch-single by Von Hayes then plated Hargrove and a single by Toby Harrah drove in Hayes.

Tigers 5, Yankees 4 at Detroit (day game):
A three-run homer by Kirk Gibson climaxed a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning that lifted the Tigers to a 5-4 triumph over the Yankees. Ironically, Gibson was in the game only because Ricky Peters had been ejected for arguing a strike call in the previous inning. Gibson's blow came with one one out after a pair of walks and a run-scoring single by Bill Fahey.

Mariners 7, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
A three-run outburst in the top of the ninth inning carried the Mariners to a 7-4 triumph over the Twins. The score was 4-4 when Julio Cruz began the ninth by reaching first safely on an error by third baseman John Castino. After Cruz stole second and Bruce Bochte walked, Tom Paciorek and Richie Zisk followed with run-scoring singles. A sacrifice by Casey Parsons advanced both runners, and after Dan Meyer walked to load the bases, Joe Simpson hit an RBI groundout. Minnesota had deadlocked the contest in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Sal Butera and an RBI single by Butch Wynegar.

A's 7, Angels 6 at Oakland (day game):
A bases-loaded walk proved to be decisive as the A's shaded the Angels, 7-6. The score was 6-6 when the A's filled the sacks in the bottom of the sixth inning on singles by Rob Picciolo and Dwayne Murphy and a walk to Wayne Gross. Losing pitcher Ken Forsch had an 0-2 count on Tony Armas before serving four balls to force home a run. Rick Langford, who was victimized in the third inning when A's center fielder Murphy dropped Fred Lynn's long fly for a two-base error, earned the victory with his league-leading 12th complete game.

Rangers 3, Red Sox 0 at Texas (night game):
Scattering six hits in a route-going performance, Rick Honeycutt hurled the Rangers to a 3-0 blanking of the Red Sox. Texas scored in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Bill Stein and twice in the eighth on a run-scoring double by Leon Roberts and a throwing error by Boston catcher Gary Allenson.

[DH] Brewers 6, Blue Jays 2 (day game) / Brewers 2, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (day game):
The Brewers swept a twin-bill from the Blue Jays, winning the opener, 6-2, and taking the second game, 2-0. Milwaukee tallied six runs in the fifth inning of the first game on an RBI double by Robin Yount, two-run single by Jim Gantner, a throwing error by Jays first baseman Greg Wells and a two-run double by Roy Howell. The only runs of the second game came in the fourth inning when Cecil Cooper stroked a two-out single and Ben Oglivie followed with a home run. Rollie Fingers recorded a save in both games to raise his season's total to 15.

[DH] Pirates 4, Cubs 3 (day game) / Cubs 6, Pirates 4 at Chicago (day game):
The Pirates and Cubs split a doubleheader, the Bucs taking the opener, 4-3 in 11 innings, and the Cubs capturing the nightcap, 6-4, as Jay Howell received credit for his first major league victory. The first game was tied, 3-3, when Mike Easler began the 11th with a single, was sacrificed to second by John Milner, took third on a groundout by Phil Garner and came home on Tony Pena's third hit of the game. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the second contest on a solo homer by Bill Buckner in the first inning and added two more runs in the third on a two-run triple by Steve Henderson. Chicago loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Tim Blackwell and walks to Ivan DeJesus and Buckner before Bobby Bonds lined a single down the left field line to score all three runners.

Reds 2, Giants 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
George Foster went 3-for-3 to key the Reds to a 2-1 victory over the Giants. The Reds scored in the first inning when Dave Collins walked, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Foster. Foster led off the sixth with a double and came home on a two-out infield single by Sam Mejias. The Giants kayoed Reds starter Mario Soto in the seventh but Tom Hume came on to record his seventh save.

Dodgers 6, Braves 5 at Los Angeles (day game):
A two-run double by Steve Garvey keyed a three-run seventh inning that enabled the Dodgers to edge the Braves, 6-5. The Dodgers trailed, 5-3, in the sixth stanza when pinch-hitter Rick Monday and Ken Landreaux drew walks and both scored on Garvey's two-bagger. After Gene Garber replaced Steve Bedrosian on the hill for Atlanta, Ron Cey singled up the middle to plate Garvey. Tom Niedenfuer, who relieved Fernando Valenzuela, picked up his first major league win.

Mets 5, Phillies 2 at New York (day game):
A four-run outburst in the third inning carried the Mets to a 5-2 triumph over the Phillies. Winning pitcher Pat Zachry began the rally with a single. After Mookie Wilson struck out, Frank Taveras got a single on a line shot off Phillie pitcher Dick Ruthven's leg. An infield out followed, but Dave Kingman then delivered a run-scoring single. Ellis Valentine drove home two more runs with a two-bagger and Lee Mazzilli capped the frame with an RBI single. Hubie Brooks collected a solo homer in the fifth.

Astros 3, Padres 0 at San Diego (day game):
Joe Niekro and Dave Smith combined on a two-hitter as the Astros blanked the Padres, 3-0. Joe Pittman began the eighth inning with a single, was sacrificed to second by Niekro and scored on Tony Scott's single to break the scoreless tie. Scott moved to second when Terry Puhl was hit by a pitch and came home on a single by Gary Woods. Scott singled in his second run of the game in the ninth.
