Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 12, Twins 2 at Detroit (night game):
Exploding for eight runs in the first inning, the Tigers coasted to a 12-2 rout of the Twins. Lance Parrish and Kirk Gibson each singled in a run and Al Cowens delivered a sacrifice fly before Lou Whitaker stroked a two-run single and Alan Trammell drilled a three-run double. Gibson collected three hits to give him six hits in his last seven times at bat.

Royals 5, Blue Jays 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A five-run eruption in the fourth inning carried the Royals to a 5-3 victory over the Blue Jays. Hal McRae opened the K.C. fourth with a walk and George Brett followed with a homer. Jays catcher Ernie Whitt dropped a foul pop by Willie Aikens for an error and Aikens then singled. He took third when third baseman Danny Ainge booted a grounder by Frank White and scored on a single by Jamie Quirk. Second baseman Damaso Garcia booted a potential double-play grounder by Darryl Motley, permitting White to score and Quirk to take third, from where he registered the final run on a fielder's choice grounder by U.L. Washington.

White Sox 4, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Driving in two runs with a single and homer, Greg Luzinski sparked the White Sox to a 4-1 triumph over the Yankees. Ron LeFlore opened the game with a single and reached second when Willie Randolph dropped Mike Squires' pop fly. After Carlton Fisk bounced into a double play, Luzinski delivered LeFlore with a single. A sacrifice fly by Fisk produced a third-inning tally and Luzinski clouted his round-tripper in the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Bill Almon closed the scoring in the seventh.

Cubs 3, Dodgers 1 at Chicago (day game):
Spacing six hits, Doug Bird pitched the Cubs to a 3-1 triumph over the Dodgers. The Cubs broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning when Bobby Bonds singled, went to third on a single by Jody Davis and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ken Reitz. Chicago added an insurance tally in the fifth when Bonds walked, reached third on a single by Davis and scored when Dodgers second baseman Pepe Frias bobbled the relay from the outfield.

Expos 6, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Andre Dawson drove in three runs as the Expos posted a 6-2 victory over the Astros. Dawson delivered the first Montreal marker with a run-scoring groundout in the first inning and he also contributed a two-run single in the seventh. The Expos broke a 1-1 tie in the second stanza on RBI singles by Ray Burris and Tim Raines.

Giants 5, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A three-run double by Joe Morgan keyed a four-run 11th inning outburst that carried the Giants to a 5-1 victory over the Pirates. The game was tied, 1-1, when Larry Herndon began the winning surge with a triple. Pinch-hitters Jeff Leonard and Jim Wohlford walked with one out to fill the bases. After pinch-hitter Bob Brenly popped out, Morgan cleared the sacks with a two-bagger and Enos Cabell singled to plate Morgan.

Cardinals 2, Padres 1 at St. Louis (night game):
A fielder's choice grounder by rookie catcher Glenn Brummer plated the decisive run as the Cardinals outlasted the Padres, 2-1 in 13 innings. The score was 1-1 when Tommy Herr began the winning surge with a one-out walk and took third on a single by Ken Oberkfell. After George Hendrick was walked intentionally to load the bases, Brummer hit a grounder between shortstop and third base. The Padres attempted an inning-ending double play but Brummer beat the relay to first as Herr scored.
