Orioles 6, Angels 5 at California (night game):
The Orioles handed the Angels their fourth straight defeat, 6-5. The Birds scored three times in the second frame on a single by John Lowenstein, two-bagger by Doug DeCinces, two-run double by Gary Roenicke and an RBI single by Mark Belanger. DeCinces singled home Ken Singleton with a third-inning run. Bobby Grich stroked an RBI single in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to 20 games, longest in the A.L. this year. Scott McGregor struggled through 6 1/3 innings to get his seventh straight victory, although he needed a save from Sammy Stewart.

Tigers 3, Twins 0 at Detroit (night game):
Rick Leach's first major league homer accounted for all the runs as the Tigers shut out the Twins, 3-0. The rookie's blast came in the sixth inning and followed a walk to Steve Kemp and a double by Kirk Gibson. Milt Wilcox gave up six hits over the first eight innings to earn the victory and Kevin Saucier hurled the ninth to register his 10th save.

Blue Jays 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
The Blue Jays beat the Royals for the first time in four meetings this season, winning 5-3 as Barry Bonnell knocked in three runs. A run-scoring single by Bonnell broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, a single by Damaso Garcia plated a sixth-inning run and Bonnell produced the final two runs in the eighth with a bases-loaded single. Roy Lee Jackson pitched 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief to save the game for the Jays.

Yankees 4, White Sox 0 at New York (night game):
Combining on a six-hitter, Ron Guidry and George Frazier pitched the Yankees past the White Sox, 4-0. The shutout was the eighth by the Yankees' staff this year and all have been combined. The Yanks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an infield single by Willie Randolph, sacrifice by Jerry Mumphrey and a triple by Bob Watson. Mumphrey singled home two runs in the seventh and Oscar Gamble doubled home the final run in the eighth.

A's 3, Red Sox 2 at Oakland (night game):
A wild pitch permitted the winning run to score as the A's beat the Red Sox, 3-2 in 15 innings. The score was 2-2 when Jeff Newman began Oakland's 15th with a walk. Fred Stanley then hit a sacrifice bunt and reached second and Newman took third when first baseman Carl Yastrzemski made a wild throw past first. After Rickey Henderson was walked intentionally to load the bases, Bosox reliever Bill Campbell uncorked a wild pitch with Dwayne Murphy at bat to score Newman.

Indians 5, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
A pinch-hit homer by Andre Thornton in the seventh inning was the big blow as the Indians sank the Mariners, 5-2. The game was tied, 2-2, when Thornton walloped his round-tripper. Doubles by Thornton, Rick Manning and Tom Veryzer produced two insurance runs in the ninth. Tom Paciorek, the league's leading hitter, raised his average to .347 with two hits in three at-bats.

[DH] Brewers 3, Rangers 1 (night game) / Rangers 8, Brewers 6 at Texas (night game):
The Brewers and Rangers split a doubleheader, the Brewers winning the first game, 3-1, and the Rangers capturing the nightcap, 8-6. In the lidlifter, Cecil Cooper and Gorman Thomas singled with two out in the first inning and Ben Oglivie followed with a three-run homer. The Rangers exploded for six runs in the sixth inning of the second game. Texas loaded the bases on singles by Pat Putnam and Jim Sundberg and a walk to Billy Sample. Two runs came in on a double by Bill Stein, Bump Wills and Al Oliver each singled home one marker, a double by Buddy Bell brought in another and a sacrifice fly by Leon Roberts accounted for the sixth run.

Mets 4, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Dave Kingman rapped two homers and doubled, driving in three runs, and Ed Lynch and Neil Allen combined on a six-hitter in the Mets' 4-0 whitewashing of the Braves. The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Kingman and registered another run in the second on a balk. Kingman also delivered solo homers in the sixth and eighth.

Dodgers 5, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Unfurling a four-hitter, Burt Hooton pitched the Dodgers past the Cubs, 5-0. The Dodgers broke the game open in the fifth inning. Pedro Guerrero opened the frame with an infield hit and, after Steve Yeager and Steve Sax struck out, Hooton walked and Ken Landreaux plated two runs with a single and Dusty Baker extended his hitting streal to 15 games with an RBI single. The Dodgers closed out the scoring in the seventh on run-scoring singles by Baker and Steve Garvey.

Reds 3, Phillies 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tom Seaver allowed just four hits in 8 1/3 innings and Sam Mejias drove in two runs with sacrifice flies in leading the Reds to a 3-1 triumph over the Phillies. Tom Hume got the final two outs to record his eighth save. The Reds broke a scoreless deadlock in the sixth. Singles by Dave Concepcion and George Foster and a walk to Dan Driessen loaded the bases. A single by Ray Knight drove in one run and Mejias plated another with a sacrifice fly. Mejias delivered his second sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Astros 4, Expos 2 at Houston (night game):
Cesar Cedeno collected three hits and drove in three runs as the Astros downed the Expos, 4-2. Houston scored twice in the first inning on a single by Craig Reynolds, double by Terry Puhl, RBI groundout by Denny Walling and run-scoring single by Cedeno. Cedeno singled home two more runs in the eighth. Larry Parrish drilled a two-run homer with two out in the top of the ninth to avert the shutout.

Giants 4, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Milt May delivered a pair of run-scoring singles and three pitchers combined on a six-hitter as the Giants recorded a 4-2 victory over the Pirates. May singled home a tally in the second inning and drove in another marker in a three-run fourth. Jeff Leonard and Johnnie LeMaster each drove home one run in the fourth. The loss was the third straight for the Bucs.

Padres 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
The Padres snapped a four-game losing streak by edging the Cardinals, 4-3. San Diego broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on a run-scoring double by Terry Kennedy and put the contest out of reach in a two-run eighth on an RBI triple by Joe Lefebvre and a single by Luis Salazar.
