Angels 3, Indians 2 at California (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Angels edged the Indians, 3-2. Bert Campaneris began the Angels' 10th with a single. Cleveland third baseman Toby Harrah then misplayed Rod Carew's sacrifice bunt and both runners were safe. After Dan Spillner replaced Sid Monge on the hill for the Indians, Rick Burleson's attempt at a sacrifice bunt resulted in a forceout at third base. But Fred Lynn worked Spillner for a base on balls and Dan Ford then delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the game-winning run. Ford had tied the contest in the ninth with a leadoff homer.

Tigers 2, Rangers 0 at Detroit (day game):
Three Detroit pitchers combined to hurl the Tigers to their eighth straight victory, 2-0 over the Rangers. The Tigers scored in the first inning when Al Cowens singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Alan Trammell and tallied on a single by Kirk Gibson. They added an insurance marker in the fifth frame on a run-scoring infield hit by Cowens.

Brewers 4, Twins 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
A single by Ted Simmons in the bottom of the 10th inning drove in the winning run as the Brewers shaded the Twins, 4-3. The score was 3-3 when Cecil Cooper led off the Brewers' 10th with a single and then stole second. After Ben Oglivie was intentionally walked and Gorman Thomas walked on a 3-2 pitch, Simmons stroked a single to right.

Yankees 5, Royals 0 at New York (day game):
Rick Reuschel, getting relief help from George Frazier, recorded his first A.L. victory as the Yankees downed the Royals, 5-0. The Bronx Bombers scored twice in the second inning on a single by Aurelio Rodriguez and two-run homer by Bucky Dent, and registered two runs in the seventh on a run-scoring triple by Jerry Mumphrey and sacrifice fly by Dave Winfield. The other N.Y. tally came in the fourth on an RBI single by Rick Cerone.

A's 2, Orioles 0 at Oakland (day game):
A two-run homer by Tony Armas in the seventh inning lifted the A's to a 2-0 blanking of the Orioles. Cliff Johnson drew a walk before Armas cracked his 16th round-tripper of the season. Rick Langford, yielding five hits, was the winning pitcher and Scott McGregor, who gave up just three safeties, suffered the loss.

Red Sox 5, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Rookie southpaw Bob Ojeda, with relief help from Mark Clear, pitched the Red Sox to a 5-3 decision over the Mariners. Singles by Dwight Evans and Jim Rice and a wild pitch produced the first Sox run in the third inning, and an RBI forceout produced another in the fourth. Boston tallied twice in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Carl Yastrzemski and RBI infield out by Garry Hancock. Jerry Remy delivered an RBI single in the eighth.

White Sox 8, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (day game):
Picking up his sixth straight victory, Britt Burns unfurled a four-hitter as the White Sox whitewashed the Blue Jays, 8-0. Greg Luzinski belted a solo homer in the second inning and Chet Lemon cracked a leadoff round-tripper in the seventh. A six-run eighth stanza was highlighted by a three-run double by Tony Bernazard.

[DH] Expos 5, Braves 4 (night game) / Braves 9, Expos 1 at Atlanta (night game):
The Expos and Braves divided a twin bill, the Expos winning the first game, 5-4, and the Braves capturing the nightcap, 9-1. A five-run sixth inning was decisive in the opener. Andre Dawson led off that frame by reachng second on an error by Atlanta third baseman Bob Horner and scored on a single by Gary Carter. After Warren Cromartie singled, John Milner blasted a three-run homer to give the Expos a 4-3 lead. A sacrifice fly by Rodney Scott later in the inning scored the final run. Horner, who had two homers in the losing effort in the opener, drove in three runs to pace the Braves in the second game. He put Atlanta ahead, 1-0, with an RBI single in the first inning and added a two-run single in the second. Claudell Washington and Chris Chambliss each clouted two-run homers to highlight a five-run sixth.

Giants 2, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Jack Clark slugged a fourth-inning homer and then scored the go-ahead run on a sixth-inning single by Larry Herndon to back the combined four-hit pitching of Vida Blue and Greg Minton, leading the Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. The Giants' winning rally consisted of successive two-out singles by Clark, Darrell Evans and Herndon.

Mets 7, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
A bases-loaded homer by Dave Kingman was the big blow as the Mets registered a 7-4 come-from-behind triumph over the Mets. The blast came with two outs in the seventh after the Mets had filled the sacks on singles by pinch-hitter Mike Cubbage, Mookie Wilson and Hubie Brooks, and gave New York a 5-4 lead. Kingman's 11th career grand slam tied him with Johnny Bench and Willie Stargell among active leaders in grand slams. The Mets picked up insurance tallies in the ninth on a two-run double by Brooks.

Phillies 8, Astros 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
A barrage of homers carried the Phillies to an 8-4 victory over the Astros. Keith Moreland belted solo round-trippers in the second and fifth innings, Manny Trillo slammed a two-run shot in the fourth and Mike Schmidt connected for his 19th of the season with a mate aboard in the fifth.

Padres 7, Pirates 6 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Erupting for four runs in the eighth inning, the Padres broke a three-game losing streak with 7-6 triumph over the Pirates. The Padres trailed, 6-3, when they loaded the bases in the eighth on a single by Ruppert Jones and walks to Luis Salazar and Joe Lefebvre. After Kent Tekulve replaced Grant Jackson on the hill for the Bucs, pinch-hitter Broderick Perkins cleared the sacks with a double. Ozzie Smith then broke the 6-6 tie with a triple.

Dodgers 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Fernando Valenzuela became the first N.L pitcher to win 10 games this season as the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals, 3-2. The rookie lefty struck out a career high 12 batters in 8 2/3 innings. The Dodgers scored on a two-run double by Ron Cey in the first inning before Derrel Thomas broke a 2-2 deadlock with a solo homer in the fifth.
