Royals 6, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
Spacing seven hits, Larry Gura hurled the Royals to a 6-1 victory over the Tigers. In the second inning, K.C.'s Cesar Geronimo singled, stole second and tallied on a single by Rance Mulliniks. The Royals wrapped it up with five runs in the fifth on a two-run homer by Geronimo, RBI singles by George Brett and Hal McRae and a bases-loaded walk.
Yankees 3, Twins 2 at New York (night game):
A pinch-single by Bobby Murcer plated the decisive run as the Yankees edged the Twins, 3-2. The score was 2-2 when Dave Winfield drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the eighth, reached second on Bobby Brown's infield single and registered on Murcer's hit. The Twins had tied the game in the top of the frame on an infield grounder by Rob Wilfong.
Cubs 9, Padres 7 at Chicago (day game):
Recording their fourth straight victory, the Cubs posted a 9-7 triumph over the Padres on a two-run homer by Steve Dillard in the bottom of the ninth inning. The score was 7-7 in the ninth when Jody Davis cracked a two-out single and Dillard followed with his circuit clout.
Expos 6, Reds 0 at Montreal (night game):
Yielding four hits, Bill Gullickson pitched the Expos to a 6-0 blanking of the Reds. Andre Dawson singled home a first-inning run and the Expos picked up three more in the third on a triple by Dawson and two-run homer by Gary Carter. Carter also stroked a two-run single in the fifth. Carter's four runs batted in gave him 11 RBIs over a five-game stretch.
Astros 9, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
Art Howe's five RBIs led the Astros to a 9-3 victory over the Mets, ending Houston's four-game losing skein. Howe drove in on of the Astros' three first-inning runs with a sacrifice fly, delivered a run-scoring single in the third and cracked a three-run double in the seventh.
Braves 5, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A single by Rafael Ramirez keyed a two-run 10th inning that lifted the Braves to a 5-3 triumph over the Phillies. With the score 3-3, Glenn Hubbard led off the 10th with a single, was sacrificed to second by Bruce Benedict and scored on Ramirez' single. Ramirez reached third when center fielder Garry Maddox misplayed his hit, and tallied on a single by Brett Butler.
Dodgers 16, Pirates 6 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Dodgers annihilated the Pirates, 16-6, as Steve Garvey drove in five runs. The Los Angeles first baseman knocked in three tallies with a bases-loaded double in the second inning, stroked a run-scoring single in the sixth and delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Mike Scioscia drove in three runs with three two-baggers and Ron Cey collected five singles in six at-bats.
Cardinals 9, Giants 4 at St. Louis (day game):
An eight-run explosion in the fifth inning carried the Cardinals to a 9-4 decision over the Giants. The first three runs came on a bases-loaded triple by Dane Iorg. Mike Ramsey and Tommy Herr followed with RBI singles, a wild pitch accounted for another marker and Darrell Porter capped the outburst with a two-run single. St. Louis shortstop Garry Templeton was ejected by plate umpire Bruce Froemming after the third inning when Templeton made obscene gestures to the fans. Templeton was pulled down the dugout steps by Manager Whitey Herzog, who announced after the game that Templeton had been fined $5,000, suspended indefinitely without pay and would not be permitted to rejoin the team until he publicly apologized to his teammates and the fans.
