Red Sox 12, A's 5 at Boston (night game):
Pounding out 15 hits and receiving eight walks, the Red Sox enjoyed a 12-5 romp over the A's. Rich Gedman cracked a two-run single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fifth. The Sox got five runs in the third frame, the last four tallies registering on successive bases-loaded walks, one by Mike Norris and three by Brian Kingman. Kingman's walks came on 14 pitches.

Yankees 6, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Jerry Mumphrey hit two triples and a homer, drove in three runs and scored three times to lead the Yankees to a 6-1 decision over the White Sox. Mumphrey led off the game with a three-bagger and scored on a single by Dave Winfield. After the Sox tied the game in the fourth on a double by Tony Bernazard and two straight wild pitches by Ron Guidry, Mumphrey hit a leadoff homer in the sixth to put the Yanks ahead, 2-1. Mumphrey drilled a two-run triple to highlight New York's four-run seventh.

Indians 1, Mariners 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Scattering six hits, John Denny pitched the Indians to a 1-0 blanking of the Mariners. The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the ninth when Ron Hassey was hit by a pitch, reached second on a groundout and, one out later, scored on a single by Rick Manning.

Brewers 6, Rangers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
A three-run homer by Cecil Cooper in the first inning triggered the Brewers to a 6-3 victory over the Rangers. Twins 6, Tigers 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Tim Laudner hit a two-run homer in his first major league game and Fernando Arroyo and Jerry Koosman combined to shut out the Tigers, 6-0. Blue Jays 4, Royals 3 at Toronto (day game):
The decisive run scored on a passed ball as the Blue Jays snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 triumph over the Royals. The game was tied, 3-3, when Otto Velez began Toronto's eighth with a two-bagger and reached third on a sacrifice by Lloyd Moseby. George Bell then went in to run for Velez and scored when catcher Jamie Quirk let a pitch get away from him.
