Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 1, Mariners 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Combining on a two-hitter, Steve Stone and Tippy Martinez pitched the Orioles to a 1-0 victory over the Mariners. The game's lone run came in the fourth inning when Rich Dauer smacked a leadoff double, advanced to third as Ken Singleton grounded out and scored when Eddie Murray bounced out to second base.
Angels 3, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Ken Forsch, getting brilliant relief help from Don Aase, became the first A.L. pitcher to win 11 games as the Angels edged the Red Sox, 3-2. California scored twice in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Bobby Grich and a wild pitch, and added another marker in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Don Baylor. Don Aase entered the game with the bases loaded and none out in the ninth and retired Dave Stapleton on a popout and Rich Gedman on an RBI groundout before getting Joe Rudi on a groundout to end the game.
Tigers 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Pushing across a run in the top of the ninth inning, the Tigers shaded the White Sox, 2-1, dealing Chicago its fifth straight defeat. With the game tied, 1-1, Lou Whitaker opened the ninth with a base on balls and was sacrificed to second by Ricky Peters. After Alan Trammell flied out, Steve Kemp singled to center, driving in Whitaker. Jerry Koosman, making his first appearance for the Sox, was the losing pitcher.
Royals 3, Brewers 1 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-run rally in the seventh inning lifted the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Brewers, giving Dick Howser his first triumph as K.C. manager. With the score 1-1, K.C. loaded the bases in the seventh on infield hits by Darryl Motley, U.L. Washington and Willie Wilson. Frank White then delivered two runs with a single through the drawn-in infield.
Yankees 11, Twins 6 at Minnesota (night game):
The Yankees lashed out 12 hits in taking an 11-6 verdict over the Twins. N.Y. scored twice in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Dave Winfield. A two-run double by Jerry Mumphrey keyed and three-run fifth and Willie Randolph smacked a two-run double in the sixth. A three-run homer by Reggie Jackson climaxed a four-run ninth.
Blue Jays 9, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Lloyd Moseby drove in four runs with a homer and single to spark a 13-hit attack that carried the Blue Jays to a 9-3 decision over the Rangers. Moseby singled home a first-inning run and drilled a three-run homer in the fourth frame. Alfredo Griffin contributed a run-scoring single in the second and two-run single in the fifth.
Phillies 3, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Facing only 29 batters, Steve Carlton pitched a three-hitter as the Phillies blanked the Braves, 3-0. The Phils scored twice in the third inning when Carlton and Pete Rose singled, advanced on an infield out and scored on a two-run single by Gary Matthews. Matthews also drilled a leadoff homer in the sixth.
Expos 4, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
A three-run rally in the seventh inning lifted the Expos to a 4-3 triumph over the Reds. Montreal trailed, 3-1, when Chris Speier opened the seventh with a single, went to third on a pinch-single by Tim Wallach and scored when Reds third baseman Ray Knight erred on a grounder by Tim Raines, who reached first safely. After a sacrifice bunt by Rodney Scott, Andre Dawson was intentionally walked to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Gary Carter chased Wallach home and a single by Warren Cromartie plated Raines with the game-winning run.
Astros 3, Mets 2 at Houston (night game):
A wild pitch by Mike Marshall allowed the winning run to score as the Astros edged the Mets, 3-2, for Houston's sixth straight victory. The game was tied, 2-2, when Alan Ashby cracked a one-out pinch-double in the bottom of the ninth and was then replaced by pinch-runner Scott Loucks, who moved to third on a grounder by Phil Garner. With pinch-hitter Harry Spilman at bat, Marshall uncorked a wild pitch to end the game.
Dodgers 3, Pirates 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
A single by Ron Cey drove home the winning run as the Dodgers outlasted the Pirates, 3-2 in 14 innings. Ken Landreaux began the Los Angeles 14th with a double. After Dusty Baker struck out and Steve Garvey was walked intentionally, Cey delivered the decisive hit. The Bucs had broken a 1-1 tie in the top of the 12th on a sacrifice fly by Omar Moreno, but the Dodgers retied the contest in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Garvey.
Padres 3, Cubs 2 at San Diego (night game):
Ruppert Jones drove in two runs with a homer and a sacrifice fly to lead the Padres to a 3-2 triumph over the Cubs. Jones got the Padres off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Ozzie Smith, who had singled and reached third on walks to Juan Bonilla and Luis Salazar. Successive singles by Randy Bass, Joe Lefebvre and Jose Moreno gave the Padres a fourth-inning marker and Jones cracked a solo shot in the fifth. Rick Wise, although needed relief help from John Urrea, received credit for his first victory since May 18.
Giants 4, Cardinals 2 at San Francisco (night game):
A dropped fly by St. Louis right fielder Sixto Lezcano was the key play of the game as the Giants beat the Cardinals, 4-2, for their fifth straight victory. The Giants scored their first run in a three-run fifth inning on singles by Joe Morgan, Jack Clark and Darrell Evans and the other two runs came in when Lezcano muffed a two-out fly ball by Larry Herndon. The final Giants tally came in the seventh when Morgan walked, went to second on a sacrifice, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Clark. Vida Blue and Al Holland combined to limit the Redbirds to five hits.
