Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Mariners 2 at Baltimore (night game):
A single by Eddie Murray in the bottom of the 11th inning plated the winning run as the Orioles edged the Mariners, 3-2. After Seattle took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 11th on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Lenny Randle, the Birds got a break in the bottom of the frame when Doug DeCinces reached second on a double error by Seattle shortstop Jim Anderson. DeCinces took third as Rick Dempsey grounded out and scored on Benny Ayala's single. Al Bumbry, attempting to sacrifice, forced Ayala at second. A single by Lenn Sakata sent Bumbry to third and a walk to Ken Singleton loaded the bases. Murray then blooped a checked-swing single to left to end the game.
Red Sox 3, Angels 1 at Boston (night game):
A two-run homer by Dave Stapleton was the decisive blow as the Red Sox defeated the Angels, 3-1, behind the combined six-hit hurling of Bob Ojeda and Mark Clear. Stapleton's blast came in the fourth inning with pinch-runner Joe Rudi on base and snapped a 1-1 tie. Rudi was running for Carney Lansford, who was hit by a pitch on his helmet.
Tigers 5, White Sox 4 at Chicago (night game):
The Tigers dealt the White Sox their sixth straight setback, scoring a run in the 10th inning to post a 5-4 decision. Kirk Gibson got an infield single, stole second and scored the winning run on a single to center by Ron Jackson. In the bottom of the inning the Sox had runners on first and second and none out, but Detroit pitcher Dave Rozema picked Bill Almon off second. Rozema then survived a passed ball to notch his second save of the season.
[DH] Indians 2, A's 0 (night game) / Indians 10, A's 4 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians swept a doubleheader from the A's, winning the first game, 2-0, behind the four-hit pitching of John Denny and capturing the nightcap, 10-4. The Tribe's runs in the opener came in the second inning when Pat Kelly opened with a single and took second on a single by Toby Harrah. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice by Ron Hassey and Rick Manning was walked intentionally to load the bases. One out later, Jerry Dybzinski delivered a two-run single to center. The Indians exploded for seven runs in the seventh stanza of the second contest, runs coming on a two-run single by Mike Hargrove, run-scoring double by Chris Bando, RBI singles by Harrah and Manning, a throwing error and Duane Kuiper's sacrifice fly.
Royals 5, Brewers 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Royals shaded the Brewers, 5-4. After the Brewers tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the ninth on an RBI pinch-single by Ted Simmons, Darryl Motley began the winning surge in the bottom of the inning with a one-out single. A double by U.L. Washington and intentional walk to Willie Wilson loaded the bases. Frank White forced Motley at the plate for the second out and George Brett then hit a grounder to third baseman Ed Romero, who threw to second base trying to get a forceout but second sacker Jim Gantner failed to touch second and his relay to first was too late to nail Brett, allowing Washington score the winning run.
Twins 4, Yankees 3 at Minnesota (night game):
A suicide squeeze plated the winning run as the Twins registered a 4-3 triumph, ending the Yankees' five-game winning streak. The Twins, trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, got life when Hosken Powell reached first safely as Dave Winfield dropped his one-out fly ball to left for an error. Mickey Hatcher then tripled Powell home and Rob Wilfong followed with a bunt in front of the plate on which catcher Rick Cerone had no play other than to throw Wilfong out at first as Hatcher scored.
Rangers 4, Blue Jays 1 at Texas (night game):
Six-hit pitching by Rick Honeycutt carried the Rangers to a 4-1 victory over the Blue Jays, ending Texas' three-game losing skein. The Rangers scored in the first inning when Mickey Rivers was safe at first on a throwing error by Jays shortstop Alfredo Griffin, stole second and came in on Al Olver's single. Billy Sample delivered an RBI single in the third inning and a two-run double in the seventh.
Braves 3, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Braves to a 3-2 triumph over the Phillies. After the Phils took a 2-1 lead in the ninth on a single by Pete Rose, Glenn Hubbard opened the bottom of the frame with a triple and tallied on Eddie Miller's single. Miller stole second and, after Luis Gomez walked, Miller stole third. Jerry Royster then hit a foul fly down the right field line and Miller scored after the catch.
Reds 7, Expos 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tom Seaver and Joe Price combined on a two-hitter as the Reds routed the Expos, 7-0. The Reds scored in their first turn at bat when Dave Collins was hit by a pitch, Dave Concepcion walked and George Foster clouted a three-run homer. They added two runs in the third on doubles by Collins and Concepcion and a run-scoring single by Ken Griffey.
Astros 8, Mets 0 at Houston (night game):
The Astros extended their winning streak to seven games with an 8-0 blanking of the Mets behind Bob Knepper's three-hit pitching. Alan Ashby paced a 16-hit attack with a two-run homer and three singles.
Dodgers 6, Pirates 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Pounding out 14 hits, the Dodgers rolled over the Pirates, 6-2. Los Angeles scored twice in the fourth inning on Mike Scioscia's single and a sacrifice fly by Bill Russell. A two-run triple by Pedro Guerrero keyed a three-run fifth and the final Dodgers marker came in the sixth on a pinch-homer by Jay Johnstone.
Padres 5, Cubs 4 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres recorded their fourth straight victory, a 5-4 decision over the Cubs in 10 innings. The game was tied, 4-4, when Tim Flannery began the bottom of the 10th with a pinch-single and reached second on a single by Juan Bonilla. Terry Kennedy then delivered the game-winning run with a single off the glove of second baseman Mike Tyson. San Diego had deadlocked the count in the bottom of the ninth on a triple by Ruppert Jones and Luis Salazar's double after the Cubs had gone ahead, 4-3, in the top of that frame on a throwing error by Padres left fielder Dave Edwards.
Cardinals 5, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Bruce Sutter notched his 18th save as the Cardinals ended San Francisco's five-game winning skein, 5-2. The Redbirds scored in the first inning when Tommy Herr singled, stole second, continued to third on an error by shortstop Johnnie LeMaster and came in on a groundout by Ken Oberkfell. Herr doubled and scored on a single by Keith Hernandez in the third and Sixto Lezcano singled in Darrell Porter, who had doubled, in the fourth.
