Today's scores and summaries:
A's 10, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
With Tony Armas belting two home runs and driving in three runs and Wayne Gross contributing a two-run homer, the A's walloped the Orioles, 10-0. The round-trip blows were the 19th and 20th of the season for Armas, the American League leader.
Mariners 8, Red Sox 7 at Boston (night game):
The Mariners took an 8-7 victory over the Red Sox in the 20th inning of a contest that was suspended after 19 innings and completed before the following night's game. In the wrap-up of the longest game in the 69-year history of Fenway Park, Dave Henderson cracked a two-out single in the 20th inning and Joe Simpson followed with a triple. The Sox loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the frame, but Jim Beattie came on to get Jim Rice to bounce into a game-ending forceout. The Sox had tied the struggle in the bottom of the ninth by scoring three times on a two-out, two-run single by Joe Rudi and an RBI single by Rich Gedman. The game was suspended because of a league rule that states no inning can begin after 1:00 a.m.
White Sox 4, Blue Jays 3 at Chicago (night game):
Greg Luzinski doubled, scoring Tony Bernazard in the last of the ninth with the run that sent the White Sox past the Blue Jays, 4-3.
Royals 3, Yankees 2 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals jumped on Tommy John for two runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Yankees, 3-2, behind the pitching of rookie Mike Jones and Dan Quisenberry. Willie Wilson led off the Kansas City first with a single and went to third on a double by Frank White. George Brett grounded out, scoring Wilson, and Amos Otis singled, scoring White.
Brewers 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (day game):
A two-run homer by Ted Simmons in the fifth inning enabled the Brewers to overcome the Twins, 4-3. Rollie Fingers, working in relief of Pete Vuckovich, recorded his 21st save.
Tigers 8, Rangers 5 at Texas (night game):
A two-run double by Ricky Peters was the key blow in a three-run second inning that sent the Tigers on the way to their fifth straight victory, an 8-5 decision over the Rangers.
Cardinals 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Sixto Lezcano's two-run homer highlighted a three-run ninth inning that produced the Cardinals' 5-3 decision over the Dodgers. A throwing error by Bill Russell on a potential game-ending double play ball opened the door to the winning rally.
Astros 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Jose Cruz cracked a two-run homer in the sixth inning to support the pitching of Vern Ruhle and reliever Dave Smith as the Astros edged the Expos, 2-1.
Reds 9, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A grand-slam homer by George Foster in the eighth inning spiced the Reds 9-3 triumph over the Phillies. Foster also singled in a run in the third. Johnny Bench, in his first starting role since breaking his ankle on May 28, had a run-scoring single and a homer.
Pirates 7, Padres 3 at San Diego (day game):
The Pirates pounded the Padres, 7-3, with veteran Luis Tiant gaining his first major league victory of the season and 226th of his career. The go-ahead run came in the third when Gene Richards lost Bill Madlock's fly in the sun and the ball dropped for a double, scoring Omar Moreno from first.
Giants 12, Cubs 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Jack Clark stroked the 100th home run of his career and Doyle Alexander pitched a two-hitter in leading the Giants to a 12-0 rout of the Cubs. The Giants scored six runs in the fourth and Alexander retired 20 batters in succession after Bobby Bonds singled to lead off the third.
