Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 8, A's 4 at Baltimore (day game):
Lenn Sakata blasted a grand slam to climax a six-run seventh inning that rallied the Orioles to an 8-4 victory over the A's. Dennis Martinez, although giving up 12 hits, won his 11th decision of the season. The Birds trailed, 4-2 in the seventh, when Jose Morales tied the game with a bases-loaded two-run pinch-double. After Doug DeCinces was hit by a pitch to reload the sacks, Sakata delivered his round-tripper.
Red Sox 6, Mariners 1 at Boston (day game):
A six-run explosion in the sixth inning carried the Red Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Mariners. A two-run single by Carl Yastrzemski and Rick Miller's two-run triple highlighted the outburst. Bruce Hurst was the winning pitcher and Mark Clear notched his seventh save.
Blue Jays 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
Homers by George Bell and Jesse Barfield powered the Blue Jays to a 3-2 triumph over the White Sox. Bell connected with the bases empty in the fourth inning and Barfield drilled a round-tripper -- the first of his major league career -- in the fifth frame following a double by Greg Wells. Roy Lee Jackson choked off a Sox rally in the seventh inning and went on to notch his seventh save.
Indians 2, Angels 0 at Cleveland (day game):
John Denny tossed a three-hitter for his fourth straight victory and third consecutive shutout, pitching the Indians to a 2-0 decision over the Angels. The Tribe tallied in the fourth inning on a double by Pat Kelly and two-out single by Ron Hassey, and picked up an unearned run in the sixth on an error by California second baseman Bobby Grich.
Yankees 6, Royals 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Scattering seven hits, Rick Reuschel pitched the Yankees to a 6-1 decision over the Royals, giving new manager Bob Lemon his first victory. Lemon had replaced Gene Michael earlier in the day after Michael was fired by owner George Steinbrenner. The Bronx Bombers tallied all their runs in their first turn at bat on RBI singles by Dave Winfield and Reggie Jackson, Bob Watson's two-run triple and run-scoring singles by Rick Cerone and Bobby Brown.
Brewers 8, Twins 7 at Minnesota (day game):
A homer by Ben Oglivie leading off the 10th inning gave the Brewers an 8-7 triumph over the Twins. Milwaukee had tied the score at 7-7 in the eighth on a double by Gorman Thomas, RBI single by Roy Howell and Mark Brouhard's run-scoring triple. Rollie Fingers, working the last two innings, was the winning pitcher.
Tigers 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (day game):
A two-run homer by Lance Parrish in the eighth inning enabled the Tigers to shade the Rangers, 4-3. Detroit was behind, 3-2, when Kirk Gibson opened the eighth with a triple. Mark Mercer then replaced Danny Darwin for Texas and struck out the next two batters, but Parrish then tagged him for a circuit shot.
Dodgers 5, Cardinals 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Fernando Valenzuela tied a league record for rookies by pitching his seventh shutout and added a three-run triple in the seventh inning to lead the Dodgers to a 5-0 victory over the Cards. Only two Redbirds reached second base, while the Dodgers scored in the third inning on Derrel Thomas' single, a sacrifice by Valenzuela and an RBI single by Davey Lopes. With the bases loaded in the seventh on a pair of singles and a hit bastsman, Valenzuela lined a three-bagger to right and tallied on Lopes' single.
Astros 4, Expos 3 at Montreal (day game):
Pushing across a run in the top of the 12th inning, the Astros edged the Expos, 4-3. The score was 3-3 when Dickie Thon hit a one-out single and moved to third on Tony Scott's single. Phil Garner then delivered another single to plate Thon. Expos' runs came on Andre Dawson's inside-the-park two-run homer in the third and his solo shot in the eighth.
Braves 5, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
Dale Murphy's three-run homer in the first inning triggered the Braves' 5-2 victory over the Mets. Murphy's blast came off Randy Jones, making his first start since the end of the strike. Atlanta added a run in the second on an RBI single by Jerry Royster and another in the eighth on Rafael Ramirez' sacrifice fly.
Reds 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
A two-out, two-run double by Ray Knght broke a 3-3 tie in the ninth inning, enabling the Reds to post a 5-4 triumph over the Phillies. The Reds had tied the game in the seventh on Dan Driessen's RBI single, an error by Phils' right fielder Lonnie Smith and a sacrifice fly by Knight. Dave Concepcion stroked a one-out single in the ninth and moved to second as George Foster bounced out. After Driessen was hit by a pitch, Knight cracked his decisive two-bagger.
Pirates 9, Padres 5 at San Diego (day game):
Jason Thompson collected four hits, including a two-run, first-inning homer, and drove in four runs to lead the Pirates to a 9-5 victory over the Padres. The first sacker also delivered an RBI single in the third and doubled home another marker in the sixth. Eddie Solomon hurled the first six innings to get the win and Don Robinson earned the save.
Giants 3, Cubs 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Vida Blue allowed just one hit in seven innings and drove in a run to pace the Giants to a 3-0 blanking of the Cubs. The southpaw had a no-hitter until Bill Buckner singled with one out in the seventh inning. After issuing a leadoff walk in the eighth, Blue departed in favor of Greg Minton, who recorded his 15th save. Consecutive singles by Darrell Evans, Jerry Martin and Milt May gave the Giants a run in the fourth inning. Martin stroked an RBI single in the fifth and Blue knocked in a sixth-inning marker with a single.
