Orioles 9, Indians 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Eddie Murray lashed four hits, including a grand slam, to lead the Orioles to a 9-2 rout of the Indians. Jim Palmer, who went 7 1/3 innings, was the winning hurler. Murray's big blow climaxed a five-run fifth inning. The Birds tallied in the third on a leadoff homer by Rick Dempsey and boosted their margin to 3-0 in the fourth on two-out run-scoring singles by Gary Roenicke and Dempsey.
Mariners 9, White Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
Casey Parsons and Tom Paciorek homered during a five-run second inning that triggered the Mariners' 9-5 triumph over the White Sox, Chicago's 10th loss in 11 games. Parsons cracked his first major league round-tripper after a single by Dan Meyer, and Paciorek's blow was a three-run shot that scored Jerry Narron and Joe Simpson. Paul Serna also hit his first major league homer, a solo blast in the third.
Tigers 3, Red Sox 1 at Detroit (night game):
Two-hit pitching by Jack Morris enabled the Tigers to post their eighth victory in nine games, 3-1 over the Red Sox. The game was tied, 1-1, in the bottom of the eighth inning when Al Cowens stroked a one-out single and went to second on a groundout. Lou Whitaker then tripled to right-center and scored on Alan Trammell's infield hit.
Royals 7, Angels 1 at Kansas City (night game):
In their first meeting of the season, the Royals downed the Angels, 7-1, to end their three-game losing skein. K.C. jumped off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk to Hal McRae, and upped the margin to 4-0 in the third on a two-run homer by Willie Aikens and Darryl Motley's sacrifice fly. Rookie southpaw Mike Jones went seven innings to raise his record to 4-1.
Twins 4, Blue Jays 0 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins snapped a four-game losing streak by blanking the Blue Jays, 4-0, behind the pitching of Darrell Jackson and Doug Corbett. John Castino cracked a two-run double in the fourth inning and the Twins picked up two more runs in the eighth on a single by Tim Corcoran.
Yankees 4, Brewers 2 at New York (day game):
Homers by Graig Nettles and Dave Winfield powered the Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers. Winfield drilled a solo shot in the first inning and Nettles connected with a mate aboard in the second frame and again with the bases empty in the fourth. Ron Guidry, going 6 2/3 innings, received credit for his sixth strsight win.
A's 2, Rangers 1 at Oakland (day game):
Mike Norris notched his 10th victory in hurling the A's to a 2-1 triumph over the Rangers. The A's tallied their first run in the opening frame on a single by Mickey Klutts. Rob Picciolo singled in the fifth, reached second on an infield out and came home on Dwayne Murphy's single.
Astros 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A leadoff homer by Jose Cruz in the ninth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Astros to a 3-2 triumph over the Braves. Houston had tied it in the fifth on Tony Scott's run-scoring single. Atlanta had runners in scoring position the last three innings but failed to get the key hit.
Reds 8, Padres 7 at Cincinnati (night game):
Two homers by Johnny Bench helped the Reds outslug the Padres, 8-7. Bench's first shot came with the bases empty in the sixth inning and boosted the Reds to a two-run lead. But the Padres pounded Tom Seaver in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs, the key hit being a three-run double by Ruppert Jones. Then in the bottom of the seventh the Reds scored five times, with Bench's two-run circuit clout climaxing the outburst.
Dodgers 5, Giants 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Ron Cey's two-run homer highlighted the Dodgers' 5-1 triumph over the Giants. Cey's blow climaxed a three-run third inning. The Dodgers scored in the first inning on singles by Davey Lopes, Dusty Baker and Steve Garvey and the last run came in the sixth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Reggie Smith.
Expos 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
Pushing across a run in the seventh inning, the Expos edged the Phillies, 5-4. The game was deadlocked at 4-4 when Larry Parrish singled, reached second on a walk to pinch-hitter John Milner and scored on Tim Raines' single. The Expos scored four times in the fourth frame, with Parrish's two-run homer the key blow.
[DH] Pirates 2, Mets 1 (night game) / Pirates 5, Mets 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Mets, 2-1 and 5-4. The Bucs prevailed in the first game when Willie Montanez clouted a pinch-homer in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie. The Mets took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning of the second game on a two-run homer by Lee Mazzilli, but the Pirates came back in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring pinch-single by Willie Stargell and Omar Moreno's RBI single.
Cubs 10, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (day game):
Bobby Bonds drove in five runs with two homers to back the three-hit pitching of Doug Bird as the Cubs whitewashed the Cardinals, 10-0. The Cubs scored in their first turn at bat on RBI singles by Bill Buckner and Jerry Morales. Bonds upped the margin to 4-0 with a two-run round-tripper in the second inning before connecting for his second clout in the sixth with two aboard.
