Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 8, Orioles 5 at Baltimore (night game):
Pounding out 15 hits, the Indians scalped the Orioles, 8-5. The Tribe tallied three times in the second inning on an RBI single by Bo Diaz, RBI double by Duane Kuiper and run-scoring single by Mike Fischlin. The Indians made it 4-0 in the third on an RBI single by Toby Harrah, and locked up the contest with a three-run fifth on run-scoring doubles by Rick Manning and Ron Hassey and an RBI single by Von Hayes.

Mariners 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
A two-run homer by Tom Paciorek was the key hit as the Mariners defeated the White Sox, 3-1. Paciorek's blast came in the first inning with Joe Simpson aboard via a single. Seattle picked up another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Simpson. Bob Stoddard, although needing relief, got credit for his second major league victory in as many starts.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
A two-run rally in the top of the 11th inning enabled the Red Sox to outlast the Tigers, 6-5. The score was 4-4 when Rick Miller started the 11th with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. After Jerry Remy received an intentional walk, Gary Allenson singled to left, scoring Miller. Later in the inning, Carney Lansford drew a bases-loaded walk.

Royals 7, Angels 3 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals completed the three-game series sweep of the Angels, winning 7-3 as George Brett led the way with two triples and two RBIs. Brett drilled a three-bagger in the first inning following a pair of leadoff walks, then tripled leading off the fifth and scored on a single by Willie Aikens. Willie Wilson collected three hits, including a run-scoring triple in the seventh.

Twins 3, Blue Jays 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Three pitchers combined to scatter eight hits in hurling the Twins to a 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays. The Twins scored in the fifth inning on a run-scoring grounder by Sal Butera and added two more tallies in the sixth on an error by Jays left fielder George Bell and a sacrifice fly by Tim Corcoran.

[DH] Yankees 5, Brewers 2 (night game) / Brewers 5, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
The Brewers and Yankees split a doubleheader, the Yanks winning the curtain raiser, 5-2, and the Brewers capturing the nightcap, 5-3. Jerry Mumphrey paced New York in the first game with four hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning and a run-scoring single in the seventh. A three-run homer by Cecil Cooper in the first inning triggered Milwaukee to triumph in the second game. His circuit clout followed a leadoff single by Paul Molitor and a walk to Robin Yount. Ben Oglivie cracked a solo round tripper later in the same frame.

Rangers 9, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
A three-run homer by Bill Stein keyed a seven-run ninth inning that lifted the Rangers to a 9-4 triumph over the A's. Texas trailed, 4-2, going into the ninth, but tied the game on an RBI groundout by Al Oliver and an error by Oakland third baseman Dave McKay. Stein then unloaded his blast and the Rangers added two more runs on an error by shortstop Rob Picciolo.

Braves 9, Astros 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Phil Niekro notched his 41st career shutout and 240th big league victory, and Bob Horner collected his 100th major league home run as the Braves topped the Astros, 9-0. Houston ace Nolan Ryan was no puzzle to Atlanta as the Braves scored twice in the first inning on a two-run single by Glenn Hubbard before Horner delivered a three-run homer in the second.

Reds 5, Padres 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
Johnny Bench was the hitting hero, slugging a homer and climaxing a three-run, ninth-inning rally with the game-winning hit as the Reds edged the Padres, 5-4. The Reds were behind, 4-2, when Mike Vail began the bottom of the ninth with a pinch-single and was replaced by pinch-runner German Barranca, who reached second on a single by Paul Householder. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice by Sam Mejias. An infield grounder by Ken Griffey scored Barranca and a single by Dave Concepcion tied the score at 4-4. George Foster then walked and Bench followed with a run-scoring single to end the game. Bench's round-tripper, No. 362 of his career, came in the sixth with the bases empty.

Giants 6, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run explosion in the 11th inning lifted the Giants to a 6-3 triumph over the Dodgers. The score was 3-3 when Jeff Leonard began the 11th with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Johnnie LeMaster. Dave Bergman then hit a two-run homer. The Dodgers had tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth on run-scoring singles by Mike Scioscia and pinch-hitter Rick Monday. Each team scored in the 10th on bases-empty homers by the Giants' Jack Clark and the Dodgers' Steve Garvey.

Phillies 11, Expos 8 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run homer by Gary Matthews climaxed a five-run rally in the eighth inning that lifted the Phillies to an 11-8 victory over the Expos. The Phils trailed, 8-6, going into the bottom of the eighth, but tied the score on a walk to Larry Bowa, double by Manny Trillo, sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Dick Davis and an RBI single by Pete Rose. Then, after Bake McBride was safe on an error by second baseman Rodney Scott, Matthews drilled a ball into the seats in left-center field.

Mets 5, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Hubie Brooks went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Mets to a 5-3 triumph over the Pirates. The Mets overcame a 3-2 deficit in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Brooks and sacrifice fly by Rusty Staub, and added an insurance tally in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Brooks. Winning pitcher Terry Leach hurled 3 1/3 innings of two-hit relief.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Cubs downed the Cardinals, 7-3, as Bobby Bonds led the way with his second two-homer game of the series. The Cubs tallied three times in their first turn at bat on RBI doubles by Bill Buckner and Jody Davis and a run-scoring single by Leon Durham. Bonds cracked a two-run shot in the second and a solo blast in the fourth.
