Rangers 11, Angels 6 at California (night game):
Pat Putnam had four hits, including two homers, and knocked in four runs to pace the Rangers to an 11-6 decision over the Angels, California's seventh straight loss. Putnam cracked a two-run round-tripper in the sixth and a solo swat in the ninth. Texas broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth on doubles by Putnam and Tom Poquette, a walk to Bump Wills, a groundout and a two-run single by Al Oliver.
Tigers 6, Indians 3 at Detroit (night game):
Pitching 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, Dan Schatzeder led the Tigers to a 6-3 triumph over the Indians. The Tigers overcame a 3-2 deficit with a two-run rally in the third inning on an RBI groundout by pinch-hitter Richie Hebner and a run-scoring single by Lance Parrish. Detroit iced the contest in the seventh on an RBI double by Alan Trammell and RBI single by Kirk Gibson.
Orioles 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Spacing seven hits, Dennis Martinez hurled the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the Brewers. The Birds scored both their runs in the fourth inning on a one-out, bases-empty homer by Eddie Murray and on a two-out walk to John Lowenstein, a stolen base and a double by Doug DeCinces.
Twins 4, White Sox 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Dave Engle's first major league homer lifted the Twins to a 4-3 verdict over the White Sox. The big blow came in the seventh inning with the score tied, 2-2, and Gary Ward on base via a two-out single.
Yankees 4, Red Sox 1 at New York (night game):
Dave Righetti struck out 11 while lowering his ERA to 1.59, and Rich Gossage notched his 20th save as the Yankees beat the Red Sox, 4-1, in the season's first meeting between the East Division rivals. The Yanks scored in the first inning on run-scoring singles by Reggie Jackson and Graig Nettles. Nettles also had a solo homer in the sixth.
A's 6, Royals 1 at Oakland (night game):
The A's moved into first place in the West Division by beating the Royals, 6-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Matt Keough. Mickey Klutts hit a three-run homer in the sixth to wipe out a 1-0 K.C. lead, and the A's picked up three more runs in the seventh on singles by Dave McKay, Rob Picciolo and Rickey Henderson, a walk to Dwayne Murphy and an error by shortstop U.L. Washington.
Mariners 8, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto (night game):
A three-run homer by Jeff Burroughs climaxed a four-run first inning that propelled the Mariners to an 8-1 victory over the Blue Jays. Julio Cruz opened the game with a single and, one out later, reached second on a single by Tom Paciorek. A single by Bruce Bochte plated Cruz and Burroughs then connected for the circuit. Paul Serna, hitting safely in seven straight games after being recalled September 1, stroked an RBI single in the third and Jerry Narron drilled a leadoff homer in the sixth.
Braves 4, Padres 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Two homers by Dale Murphy helped Gaylord Perry pick up his 296th career victory as the Braves topped the Padres, 4-1. Murphy broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run circuit clout in the third and cracked a solo shot in the eighth. With relief help from Rick Camp, who earned his 14th save, Perry finally succeeded in winning No. 296 on his sixth try.
Cubs 6, Expos 5 at Chicago (day game):
Stretching their winning skein to four games, the Cubs outlasted the Expos, 6-5. Chicago scored four runs in their first turn at bat on run-scoring singles by Bill Buckner, Jerry Morales and Pat Tabler and a sacrifice fly by Ken Reitz. After posting another run in the second inning, the Cubs had a solo homer by Reitz in the fifth. The Expos closed to within 6-5 and had runners on first and third with one out in the top of the ninth but failed to score as Tim Raines fanned and Wallace Johnson was cut down stealing on the same play to end the game.
Reds 3, Dodgers 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
A homer by Ron Oester with one out in the 10th inning lifted the Reds to a 3-2 triumph over the Dodgers. Los Angeles had deadlocked the contest in the seventh on a solo homer by Rick Monday.
Astros 6, Giants 0 at Houston (night game):
Five-hit pitching by Don Sutton paced the Astros to a 6-0 triumph over the Giants. Houston scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Art Howe and added three runs in the third on a two-run single by Gary Woods and run-scoring groundout by Kiko Garcia.
Phillies 8, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Keith Moreland and Manny Trillo combined to drive in five runs as the Phillies whitewashed the Pirates, 8-0, behind the pitching of Steve Carlton and Jerry Reed. Moreland doubled home a run in the first inning and singled in two more in the second. Trillo singled in a run in the first and doubled home another in the third. The Bucs' Bill Madlock went 3-for-4 to raise his league-leading average to .346.
Cardinals 4, Mets 2 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals ended their five-game losing streak by downing the Mets, 4-2. The Redbirds scored three runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Keith Hernandez, error by Mets shortstop Frank Taveras and a sacrifice fly by Ken Oberkfell. Gene Roof delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh before Bruce Sutter came on to record his 20th save.
