Angels 8, Rangers 7 at California (day game):
The Angels snapped their eight-game losing streak by outlasting the Rangers, 8-7 in 12 innings. The game was tied at 7-7 when Dan Ford began the botttom of the 12th with an infield hit, reached second on a wild pitch and advanced to third as Bobby Grich grounded out. After an intentional walk to Ed Ott, Juan Beniquez lofted a sacrifice fly to right. The victory was marred when Rod Carew collided with Billy Sample in the top of the 12th and was carried from the field on a stretcher. His injury was diagnosed as a mild concussion. Sample was shaken up but was able to walk off the field.
Tigers 8, Indians 6 at Detroit (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Tigers downed the Indians, 8-6. Detroit broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning, scoring all their runs after two were out on a double by Lou Whitaker, RBI single by Ricky Peters, walk to Alan Trammell, two-run bloop double by Kirk Gibson and a single by Steve Kemp.
Brewers 5, Orioles 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Three pitchers combined to pitch a six-hit shutout as the Brewers defeated the Orioles, 5-0. The Brewers got all the runs they needed in the fourth inning. A single by Cecil Cooper sandwiched between walks to Paul Molitor and Ted Simmons filled the bases and Ben Oglivie drove in two runs with a single. Gorman Thomas followed with an RBI single, and a run-scoring single by Jim Gantner capped the outburst.
Twins 7, White Sox 6 at Minnesota (day game):
A two-run pinch-double by Kent Hrbek iin the bottom of the ninth inning climaxed a four-run rally that gave the Twins a 7-6 triumph over the White Sox, Minnesota's sixth straight victory. Rob Wilfong began the winning surge with a walk and was tripled home by Gary Ward. Dave Engle followed with a single and after Mickey Hatcher sacrificed, Kevin Hickey replaced Ed Farmer on the hill for the Pale Hose. Hickey walked Butch Wynegar and was derricked in favor of LaMarr Hoyt who, after getting the second out, walked Hosken Powell to load the bases. Hrbek then delivered his game-winning hit.
Yankees 10, Red Sox 6 at New York (day game):
A pair of four-run innings enabled the Yankees to down the Red Sox, 10-6. The Yanks tallied four times in the second inning on RBI singles by Bob Watson and Rick Cerone and a two-run single by Willie Randolph. They added four markers in the fourth frame on an RBI groundout by Randolph, sacrifice fly by Jerry Mumphrey and a two-run homer by Dave Winfield.
Royals 6, A's 5 at Oakland (day game):
A bloop single by Willie Wilson scored Cesar Geronimo from second base with two out in the 12th inning to give the Royals a 6-5 victory over the A's and stretch the K.C. lead in the West Division to two games. Geronimo had singled and moved up on a base hit by John Wathan. The A's had tied the score at 5-5 in the eighth on an RBI pinch-single by Jim Spencer.
Padres 6, Braves 4 at Atlanta (day game):
A three-run explosion in the 10th inning enabled the Padres to down the Braves, 6-4. The score was 3-3 when Randy Bass began the 10th with a pinch-double and was replaced by pinch-runner Mario Ramirez. Ozzie Smith then laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached first safely with Ramirez taking third when the throw to third was late. A single by Juan Bonilla plated Ramirez and, one out later, Luis Salazar tripled home two more runs.
Expos 10, Cubs 6 at Chicago (day game):
Andre Dawson and Larry Parrish drove in three runs apiece to pace the Expos to a 10-6 victory over the Cubs. Dawson cracked an RBI double and scored on a single by Warren Cromartie in the first inning, and a leadoff homer by Tim Wallach in the second gave the Expos a 3-0 lead. Dawson and Parrish each stroked run-scoring singles in the fifth frame and the Expos put the contest out of reach with a five-run sixth. An RBI single by Rodney Scott, run-scoring double by Dawson, two-run double by Parrish and a wild pitch accounted for the five tallies. Cubs' pinch-hitter Mel Hall belted his first major league homer in the fifth with Pat Tabler aboard via a triple.
Dodgers 4, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Rick Monday singled home the tie-breaking run in the fourth inning and the Dodgers went on to post a 4-2 decision over the Reds. Dusty Baker hit a solo homer in the second stanza before the Dodgers snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the fourth when Steve Garvey singled, took second on an infield out and tallied on the single by Monday. The Dodgers added two runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Derrel Thomas and a run-scoring infield single by Bobby Castillo.
Astros 3, Giants 0 at Houston (night game):
Scattering nine hits, Bob Knepper and Frank LaCorte combined to pitch the Astros to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Giants. Houston scored in the first inning on a wild pitch and boosted the lead to 2-0 in the seventh on a single by Craig Reynolds and a pinch-double by Danny Heep. Reynolds knocked in the final run with an infield hit in the eighth.
Pirates 3, Phillies 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A two-run pinch-single by Jason Thompson was the key blow as the Pirates edged the Phillies, 3-2. The Bucs were behind, 2-1, in the bottom of the eighth inning when Omar Moreno reached first safely on an error by shortstop Larry Bowa with one out. A pinch-single by Willie Stargell sent Moreno to third. After Matt Alexander ran for Stargell and stole second, Bill Madlock was walked intentionally to load the bases. Thompson then slapped a single to right, scoring Moreno and Alexander.
Cardinals 4, Mets 2 at St. Louis (day game):
A balk by reliever Jesse Orosco produced the go-ahead run as the Cardinals posted a 4-2 victory over the Mets for a sweep of the three-game series. With the game tied, 2-2, and runners on first and third with nobody out in the sixth, Orosco entered the game for New York and was called for a balk that permitted Tito Landrum to score from third and break the deadlock. The Redbirds picked up an insurance marker in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Tommy Herr. Bruce Sutter took over the St. Louis pitching chores in the ninth and recorded his 21st save.
