Royals 3, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Atlee Hammaker, getting relief help from Dan Quisenberry, received credit for his first major league victory as the Royals shaded the Angels, 3-2. K.C. scored in the opening frame on a leadoff single by Willie Wilson and a one-out double by George Brett. Brett walked in the third, stole second and tallied on a single by Willie Aikens. Clint Hurdle delivered a run-scoring pinch-single in the fifth.
Orioles 7, Indians 6 at Cleveland (night game):
A three-run pinch-homer by Benny Ayala in the top of the ninth inning enabled the Orioles to prevail over the Indians, 7-6. The Birds trailed, 4-3, when Terry Crowley began the winning rally with a single. Mike Stanton replaced Tom Brennan on the hill for Cleveland and was touched for a single by John Lowenstein and an RBI double by Doug DeCinces. After pinch-hitter Jose Morales struck out, Sid Monge took over the Indians' pitching chores. Ayala was then inserted as a pinch-hitter for Dan Graham and drilled a 1-2 serve for a round-tripper.
Brewers 2, Yankees 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Rollie Fingers recorded his 25th save of the season as the Brewers edged the Yankees, 2-1. Milwaukee registered both of its runs in the third inning. Sal Bando doubled and advanced to third on Jim Gantner's bunt. Paul Molitor then walked. Robin Yount delivered Bando with a fly ball and Molitor scored all the way from first on a single by Cecil Cooper to left. Fingers took over the hill duties in the eighth from winning pitcher Moose Haas.
Mariners 8, White Sox 4 at Seattle (night game):
Scoring seven runs in their last two turns at bat, the Mariners posted an 8-4 triumph over the White Sox. The game was tied at 1-1 when Bruce Bochte opened the seventh inning with a homer. The Mariners tallied twice more on singles by Jim Maler, Julio Cruz, Lenny Randle and Jeff Burroughs. They added four markers in the eighth with the key blow being a two-run triple by Randle.
Rangers 12, A's 2 at Texas (night game):
Pounding out 18 hits, the Rangers enjoyed a 12-2 rout of the A's. Al Oliver led the Texas attack with four hits and four RBIs. Bump Wills went 4-for-4 and Mickey Rivers was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. The Rangers took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a single by Oliver and sacrifice fly by Buddy Bell.
Blue Jays 4, Twins 2 at Toronto (night game):
The Blue Jays snapped Minnesota's seven-game winning streak, defeating the Twins, 4-2. The Jays took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a hit batsman, stolen base, run-scoring double by Buck Martinez and an error by Twins' second baseman Rob Wilfong. They added another pair in the fourth on a throwing error by Minnesota catcher Sal Butera and an RBI single by Al Woods.
Pirates 8, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Luis Tiant pitched a four-hitter and climaxed a five-run sixth inning with a three-run double to lead the Pirates in an 8-2 victory over the Cubs. The Bucs tallied in the opening inning on a leadoff homer by Omar Moreno and moved to a 2-0 lead in the second on a solo homer by Dave Parker. The Bucs counted five in the sixth on RBI singles by Parker and Tony Pena and Tiant's two-bagger that was preceded by an intentional base on balls.
Reds 4, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Charlie Leibrandt tossed a five-hitter in hurling the Reds to a 4-0 whitewashing of the Astros. The Reds took a 1-0 lead in their first turn at bat on a run-scoring single by George Foster and added another marker in the third on a sacrifice fly by Dave Concepcion. Foster and Ray Knight delivered RBI singles in the sixth.
[DH] Cardinals 3, Expos 2 (night game) / Expos 4, Cardinals 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Cardinals and Expos divided a doubleheader, the Redbirds winning the opener, 3-2, and the Expos capturing the nightcap, 4-3. Garry Templeton, returning to the lineup after his suspension, sparked St. Louis in the first game by going 4-for-5, scoring two runs and driving in another. Templeton singled in the first inning, stole second and scored on a single by Keith Hernandez. He also singled in the sixth and came in on a single by Dane Iorg. In the seventh Templeton singled home Gene Roof. Bruce Sutter came on in the ninth to notch his 22nd save. St. Louis errors helped Montreal to its second-game victory. The Expos broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth on an RBI single by Bobby Ramos and picked up two runs in the fifth on misplays by left fielder Roof and shortstop Mike Ramsey. Woodie Fryman relieved with the bases loaded in the ninth and got the final out to preserve the triumph.
Padres 8, Dodgers 2 at San Diego (night game):
Terry Kennedy's seventh consecutive hit over a two-game span, a three-run double in the fifth inning, was the big blow of the game as the Padres posted an 8-2 victory over the Dodgers. The Padres broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Tim Flannery and loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Ozzie Smith, a fielder's choice, sacrifice bunt by Broderick Perkins and an intentional walk to Ruppert Jones before Kennedy cracked his two-bagger to clear the bases.
Giants 6, Braves 5 at San Francisco (night game):
A three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning enabled the Giants to squeeze out a 6-5 triumph over the Braves. The Giants were behind, 5-2, when the winning surge began with Enos Cabell reaching first safely on a throwing error by shortstop Luis Gomez. Larry Herndon beat out an infield hit and Darrell Evans stroked a run-scoring single. Jeff Leonard followed with an RBI double and Milt May was walked intentionally to load the bases. After Jerry Martin struck out, pinch-hitter Dave Bergman laid a squeeze bunt down the third base line and Joe Pettini, running for Evans, crossed the plate with the winning run.
