[DH] Red Sox 2, Tigers 1 (night game) / Red Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox swept a doubleheader from the Tigers, winning the first game, 2-1 in 10 innings, and taking the second contest, 5-4. The opener was deadlocked, 1-1, when Jerry Remy led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk and advanced to second on a long fly to center by Dwight Evans. One out later, Carl Yastrzemski received an intentional walk and Carney Lansford stroked a single to plate Remy. A two-run single by Dave Stapleton was the decisive hit of the nightcap. The Sox were behind, 4-3, when Evans delivered a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh. One out later, a single by Yastrzemski sent Evans to third. A walk to Lansford filled the sacks and Stapleton followed with the game-wining safety. The twin triumphs moved the Bosox to within 1½ games of the front-running Tigers in the A.L. East.
Royals 3, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Royals downed the Angels, 3-1. The game was tied, 1-1, when George Brett opened the eighth inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Amos Otis. Hal McRae then hit a roller than shortstop Rick Burleson threw into the Royals' dugout, allowing Brett to score. Brett ended the scoring in the ninth with an RBI single.
Brewers 3, Yankees 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Driving in two runs with a homer and double, Gorman Thomas paced the Brewers to a 3-2 triumph over the Yankees. Thomas belted a solo round-tripper in the second inning and drove in the second tally of a two-run sixth. Paul Molitor singled in the sixth, stole second, took third on an infield out and came in on a single by Cooper. Thomas then followed with a two-bagger.
White Sox 3, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
Permitting just three hits, Britt Burns pitched the White Sox to a 3-1 decision over the Mariners. The score was 1-1 when Carlton Fisk began the ninth inning with an infield hit and raced to third when third baseman Lenny Randle threw wildly to first base. A double by Chet Lemon plated Fisk, and Lamar Johnson provided insurance with an RBI single.
A's 2, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
The A's edged the Rangers, 2-1, behind the five-hit hurling of Mike Norris. Oakland's tallies came on a two-run homer by Dwayne Murphy in the eighth inning. Oakland's Cliff Johnson and Texas' Danny Darwin got into a seventh-inning brawl and both benches emptied. Several fights broke out, with Johnson involved in more than one, and the Rangers' John Ellis was also prominent. Johnson was the only player ejected.
Twins 5, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
Aided by three double plays, Albert Williams and Doug Corbett pitched the Twins to a 5-2 victory over the Blue Jays despite giving up 12 hits. The Twins loaded the bases in the fifth inning on a single, walk and hit batsman, and Hosken Powell cleared the sacks with a double. John Castino drilled a two-run homer in the sixth.
Dodgers 3, Braves 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run pinch-single by Reggie Smith capped a three-run rally in the seventh inning that enabled to Dodgers to edge the Braves, 3-2. Trailing, 2-0, the Dodgers loaded the bases with two out in the seventh on a single by Dusty Baker and walks to Pedro Guerrero and Mike Scioscia. A single by Derrel Thomas drove in Baker, and Smith followed with his single, scoring Guerrero and Scioscia.
[DH] Cardinals 7, Expos 1 (night game) / Expos 4, Cardinals 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Cardinals and Expos split a twin bill, the Redbirds winning the opener, 7-1, and Montreal taking the nightcap, 4-3 in 11 innings. The Redbirds took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the lidlifter on a solo homer by Darrell Porter and a two-run double by George Hendrick, and broke the contest open with a four-run eighth highlighted by a bases-loaded triple by Ken Oberkfell. The Expos deadlocked the second game with a two-run rally in the eighth on a solo homer by Terry Francona and RBI single by Gary Carter. Warren Cromartie led off the bottom of the 11th with a single, went to second on a sacrifice by Carter, reached third on a single by Rowland Office and scored on a single by Larry Parrish.
[DH] Phillies 3, Mets 1 (night game) / Mets 5, Phillies 4 at New York (night game):
The Phillies and Mets broke even in two games, the Phillies winning the first contest, 3-1, and the Mets winning the second, 5-4, despite a 15-strikeout performance by Steve Carlton. Dick Ruthven set the Mets down in the opener and drove home the tie-breaking run in the fourth inning with a single following a double by Larry Bowa. Mike Schmidt blasted a solo homer in the fifth. The Mets trailed, 4-3, going into the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap, when Dave Kingman walked and John Stearns belted a two-run homer, his first round-tripper since 1979.
Astros 5, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Don Sutton and Joe Sambito combined on a four-hitter as the Astros topped the Padres, 5-2. Houston scored three runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Art Howe, an error by Padres left fielder Alan Wiggins and a run-scoring groundout by Danny Heep.
Giants 12, Reds 7 at San Francisco (night game):
Blasting off with five runs in the first inning, the Giants outslugged the Reds, 12-7. Darrell Evans led the attack with three hits, including a homer, four runs scored and two RBIs.
