Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 5, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Pete Vuckovich, getting brilliant relief help from Jamie Easterly, who pitched two-hit shutout ball over the final four innings, received credit for his 13th victory as the Brewers moved into first place in the A.L. East with a 5-1 triumph over the Orioles. The Brewers scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single by Ted Simmons and a run-scoring double by Gorman Thomas. Paul Molitor had an RBI double in the second and Thomas slammed a solo homer in the eighth.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
A run-scoring single by Bobby Murcer in the eighth inning was the decisive blow as the Yankees downed the Red Sox, 6-4. The game was tied, 4-4, when Willie Randolph began the eighth with an infield hit, reached second on an errant pickoff atempt, took third on a sacrifice by Larry Milbourne and, one out later, scored on a single by Murcer. Bob Watson added insurance with a solo homer in the ninth. The Yanks had registered four runs in the sixth on a three-run homer by Dave Winfield and a bases-empty shot by Lou Piniella.

A's 10, White Sox 5 at Chicago (night game):
A bases-loaded triple by Tony Armas in the third inning and a grand slam by Dwayne Murphy in the ninth were the big blows as the A's submerged the White Sox, 10-5. Armas' three-bagger highlighted a six-run outburst. The first two tallies were driven in on an infield single by Rickey Henderson and a squeeze bunt by Murphy. A run-scoring single by Mike Heath capped the outburst. Murphy's circuit clout was the first bases-loaded round-tripper of his career.

Indians 8, Tigers 4 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians ended their five-game losing skein and extended Detroit's losing streak to five games by beating the Tigers, 8-4. A two-run homer by Bo Diaz put the Tribe ahead in the second and Jorge Orta ended an 0-for-15 slump by delivering an RBI triple in a two-run third. Von Hayes and Toby Harrah hit RBI singles in the fifth frame and Mike Hargrove and Hayes stroked run-scoring singles in the sixth. John Denny, although needing relief, received credit for his sixth straight victory.

Royals 8, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Willie Wilson drove in three runs to spark the Royals to an 8-3 victory over the Mariners. Wilson had two hits, including a two-run single in the fourth inning that put the Royals ahead to stay, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Willie Aikens also had three hits, including his 15th homer of the season and a double. Dan Quisenberry pitched the final three frames to record his 17th save.

Twins 6, Rangers 3 at Texas (night game):
Dave Engle drove in four runs with a homer and a bases-loaded double to lead the Twins to a 6-3 decision over the Rangers. Engle gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead with a round-tripper in the first inning and climaxed a four-run outburst in the second stanza with a three-run double.

Blue Jays 5, Angels 1 at Toronto (night game):
The Blue Jays dealt the Angels their 12th loss in the last 13 games, winning 5-1 as Jackson Todd pitched five scoreless innings of two-hit relief. The Jays broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning when John Mayberry doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a forceout by Lloyd Moseby. Toronto broke the game open in the seventh on a two-run triple by Otto Velez and an RBI infield hit by Moseby.

Reds 5, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
A two-run pinch-homer by Johnny Bench in the ninth inning lifted the Reds to a 5-4 triumph over the Dodgers. The Reds trailed, 4-3, when Ron Oester began the ninth with a single and, one out later, Bench connected for the circuit. The Dodgers had just broken a 3-3 tie in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Reggie Smith.

Expos 11, Cubs 0 at Montreal (night game):
Scott Sanderson pitched a five hitter as the Expos pounded out 14 hits in easing to an 11-0 blanking of the Cubs. The Expos scored four runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Warren Cromartie, error by Cubs third baseman Steve Dillard and a two-run single by Gary Carter. Errors by Dillard and Bobby Bonds also contributed to the Expos' six-run fourth inning.

Mets 8, Cardinals 1 at New York (night game):
A two-run triple by Hubie Brooks keyed a four-run first inning that propelled the Mets to an 8-1 victory over the Cardinals. Mookie Wilson began the Mets first with an infield hit and John Stearns reached first on an error by third baseman Ken Oberkfell. Brooks then drilled his three-bagger and, one out later, tallied on a double by Dave Kingman. An RBI single by Doug Flynn capped the outburst. A two-run single by Flynn highlighted a four-run eighth.

Pirates 7, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run uprising in the top of the ninth inning enabled the Pirates to edge the Phillies, 7-6. The game was tied, 4-4, when Tony Pena opened the ninth with a single and reached second on a sacrifice by Lee Lacy. After pinch-hitter Willie Stargell struck out, Mike Easler lined a pinch-double to plate Pena. Omar Moreno was then walked intentionally and Tim Foli followed with a fly to short left that Gary Matthews dropped for an error. Both Easler and Moreno scored on the play. Matthews was charged with a second error on a wild throw trying to nip Moreno at the plate. The Phils scored twice in the bottom of the frame before Mark Lee relieved to retire Manny Trillo on a groundout with a runner on third.

Braves 3, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Spinning a two-hitter, Larry McWilliams pitched the Braves to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Padres. The Braves tallied twice in the sixth inning when Claudell Washington singled, stole second, reached third on a throwing error by catcher Terry Kennedy and came in on a double by Bob Horner. A single by Rufino Linares drove home Horner. Ruppert Jones and Kennedy singled in the second inning for the only hits off McWilliams, who retired the last 10 batters he faced.

Giants 5, Astros 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Jerry Martin and Joe Morgan had three hits apiece to pace the Giants to a 5-2 decision over the Astros. Singles by Morgan, Jack Clark and Martin, plus a walk and a sacrifice fly by Larry Herndon, produced two first-inning runs and the Giants upped their margin to 3-0 in the second on consecutive singles by Doyle Alexander, Morgan and Enos Cabell. A single by Martin and double by Johnnie LeMaster made it 4-0 in the fourth and Morgan and Cabell drilled back-to-back two-baggers in the seventh.
