Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 8, Brewers 2 at Baltimore (day game):
Lenn Sakata rapped two homers and Jim Palmer pitched a five-hitter as the Orioles captured an 8-2 decision from the Brewers. Palmer went the route for the first time since May 25.
Red Sox 4, Yankees 1 at Boston (day game):
Two homers by Tony Perez powered the Red Sox to a 4-1 triumph over the Yankees. Perez erased a 1-0 deficit in the fourth inning with a round-tripper that followed a single by Dave Stapleton. He added a second shot with the bases empty in the sixth. The Sox added their final run later in the same frame on an RBI infield hit by Jerry Remy.
White Sox 11, A's 3 at Chicago (day game):
With a 13-hit barrage, the White Sox thumped the A's, 11-3. The Sox scored three runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Harold Baines, bases-loaded walk to Tony Bernazard and sacrifice fly by Lamar Johnson. Jim Morrison slammed a two-run homer in the sixth.
Tigers 5, Indians 1 at Cleveland (day game):
A three-run double by Steve Kemp capped a four-run ninth inning that lifted the Tigers to a 5-1 triumph over the Indians and enabled Detroit to regain first place in the A.L. East. With the game tied, 1-1, Ricky Peters opened the ninth with a walk and was forced at second by Lynn Jones. Jones reached second on Richie Hebner's pinch-single and scored the tie-breaking tally on a double by Lou Whitaker. One out later, a walk to Kirk Gibson loaded the bases and Kemp followed with a two-bagger that cleared the sacks.
Mariners 3, Royals 2 at Seattle (day game):
Scattering 11 hits in a route-going performance, Floyd Bannister pitched the Mariners to a 3-2 triumph over the Royals. Seattle trailed, 2-1, when Paul Serna opened the bottom of the seventh with a single and was sacrificed to second. After Julio Cruz walked, Serna scored on a single by Joe Simpson and Tom Paciorek drilled a two-bagger to plate Cruz.
Rangers 4, Twins 3 at Texas (day game):
A two-run rally in the ninth inning enabled the Rangers to shade the Twins, 4-3. Texas was behind, 3-2, when Bump Wills opened the bottom of the ninth with a double. One out later, Al Oliver walked and Wayne Tolleson ran for him. Both runners advanced on an infield out, and Wills scored on an infield single by Leon Roberts. Jim Sundberg lined a single to right to plate Tolleson with the winning run.
Blue Jays 6, Angels 3 at Toronto (day game):
The Blue Jays continued to make life miserable for California, defeating the Angels, 6-3. The Jays broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning when Otto Velez walked, went to third on a single by Lloyd Moseby and scored on a single by Buck Martinez. Ted Cox, who tied the score at 3-3 in the third with a homer, delivered a two-run single in the sixth.
Reds 5, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Reds won their fourth straight game, beating the Dodgers, 5-1, as Dan Driessen led the way with three RBIs. A double by Dave Collins, single by Ken Griffey and walk to George Foster loaded the bases in the first inning before Driessen singled home two runs. Driessen stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth before Ron Oester delivered a sacrifice fly and Joe Nolan cracked an RBI double in the eighth. Mario Soto went the route on a seven-hitter.
Expos 4, Cubs 0 at Montreal (day game):
Striking out 13 batters and permitting just three hits, Bill Gullickson hurled the Expos to a 4-0 blanking of the Cubs. The Expos scored three runs in their first turn at bat, kayoing Cubs starter Mike Griffin after two-thirds of an inning as Larry Parrish, Tim Wallach and Chris Speier delivered run-scoring singles.
Mets 7, Cardinals 6 at New York (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Mets edged the Cardinals, 7-6, as Mookie Wilson, whose error allowed the Cardinals to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning, clouted a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to win the game. The Mets had two out and nobody on when Frank Taveras cracked a double, and Wilson followed by belting a 3-1 serve from Bruce Sutter over the right field fence.
Phillies 5, Pirates 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
Mike Schmidt's 27th homer capped a four-run seventh inning that enabled the Phillies to shade the Pirates, 5-4. The Phils trailed, 3-1, when Manny Trillo began the bottom of the seventh with a single, went to third on Dave Parker's throwing error and scored on a pinch-double by Greg Gross. A triple by Lonnie Smith plated Gross and brought on Kent Tekulve in relief of Eddie Solomon. A single by Pete Rose drove home Smith with the go-ahead run and, after a double play, Schmidt drilled a ball into the left field seats.
Braves 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
Aided by an error, the Braves tallied twice in the 11th inning to down the Padres, 3-1. The game was tied, 1-1, when pinch-hitter Larry Whisenton opened the 11th with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Eddie Miller, who stole second. A single by Claudell Washington scored Miller, and when Luis Salazar misplayed the ball in right field, Washington reached third. He scored on a single by Jerry Royster.
Astros 7, Giants 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Blasting off for four runs in the first inning, the Astros went on to a 7-3 triumph over the Giants. Houston sent nine men to the plate in the opening frame, knocking out San Francisco starter Gary Lavelle, who faced only five batters. The key blows were an RBI single by Jose Cruz and a two-out, two-run single by Luis Pujols. Lavelle started because Giants ace Vida Blue was out with an injury.
