Tigers 5, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Milt Wilcox, who was previously 0-9 lifetime against Baltimore, not including a defeat in the 1970 World Series, fired a six-hitter in hurling the Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Orioles. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by John Wockenfuss and boosted their margin to 3-0 in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Ron Jackson and sacrifice fly by Wockenfuss. The Birds' lone tally came in the sixth on a homer by Jim Dwyer.

Red Sox 9, Brewers 3 at Boston (night game):
A five-run outburst in the third inning sent the Red Sox on their way to a 9-3 triumph over the Brewers. The Bosox trailed, 2-0, when Jerry Remy singled with one out in the third and scored on a double by Jim Rice. After Carl Yastrzemski walked, a single by Carney Lansford plated Rice. Dave Stapleton then climaxed the rally with a three-run homer. Lansford collected two hits, raising his league-leading average to .336.

Angels 6, White Sox 3 at California (night game):
The Angels snapped their six-game losing streak with a 6-3 triumph over the White Sox. California took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run single by Joe Ferguson, and a pair of Sox errors helped California to two more runs in the fourth. The Angels closed out the scoring in the eighth on a solo homer by Don Baylor and run-scoring single by Bert Campaneris.

Twins 7, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
John Castino, Dave Engle and Ron Washington each knocked in two runs to carry the Twins to a 7-2 victory over the Royals. Castino gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead in the first inning when he tripled after singles by Mickey Hatcher and Roy Smalley, and Engle made it 4-0 in the second with a two-run double. Gary Ward hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Washington knocked in two runs with a double in the fifth.

Indians 5, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Recording his first shutout of the season, Rick Waits sapced six hits in twirling the Indians past the Yankees, 5-0. The Tribe scored twice in the fifth on a walk to Rick Manning, infield single by Dave Rosello and two-run double by Mike Fischlin. Manning had three stolen bases, giving him 14 consecutive thefts.

Rangers 4, Mariners 1 at Texas (night game):
Danny Darwin permitted just three hits as the Rangers defeated the Mariners, 4-1. Texas tallied three times in the fourth on an RBI single by Buddy Bell, throwing error by Seattle center fielder Joe Simpson and run-scoring double by Pat Putnam. Al Oliver delivered an RBI single in the eighth.

Cardinals 2, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Combining on a three-hitter, Joaquin Andujar and Bruce Sutter pitched the Cardinals to a 2-0 whitewashing of the Cubs. Andujar had to leave after eight innings because of a pulled hamstring and Sutter came in to notch his 23rd save. The Redbirds scored in the sixth on a leadoff triple by Garry Templeton and a one-out sacrifice fly by Darrell Porter. Keith Hernandez delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Expos 1, Phillies 0 at Montreal (night game):
Pushing across a run in the 17th inning, the Expos edged the Phillies, 1-0. Rodney Scott stroked a one-out single in the bottom of the 17th and Warren Cromartie and Jerry White drew walks to load the bases. Andre Dawson then hit a grounder to third baseman Mike Schmidt, but his throw to the plate on an attempted forceout was too late to get Scott. Winning pitcher Bryn Smith earned his first major league decision. Phils starter Steve Carlton notched 12 strikeouts to raise his career total to 3,128, breaking Bob Gibson's all-time N.L. record.

Mets 4, Pirates 3 at New York (night game):
John Stearns was credited with a steal of home [later retracted and scored as a wild pitch] for the winning run as the Mets outlasted the Pirates, 4-3 in 13 innings. The score was 3-3 when Stearns drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the 13th and went to third on a single by Ron Gardenhire. With the count 1-2 on Brian Giles and Stearns running, Mark Lee uncorked a pitch low and outside past catcher Tony Pena and Stearns dashed across the plate. The Bucs had knotted the count in the ninth on an RBI single by Mike Easler and a sacrifice fly by Johnny Ray.

Padres 6, Reds 0 at San Diego (night game):
Chris Welsh issued only three singles and the Padres erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to subdue the Reds, 6-0. San Diego's tallies came on an RBI single by Barry Evans, bases-loaded walk to Welsh, a squeeze bunt by Ozzie Smith and run-scoring singles by Juan Bonilla, Gene Richards and Luis Salazar.
