Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 1, Tigers 0 at Baltimore (night game):
A leadoff homer by Jim Dwyer in the ninth inning gave the Orioles a 1-0 victory over the Tigers as Dennis Martinez, notching his 14th victory, permitted only three singles. The loss cut Detroit's winning skein at four games.

Red Sox 11, Brewers 5 at Boston (night game):
An eight-run explosion in the seventh inning lifted the Red Sox to an 11-5 triumph over the Brewers. Trailing, 4-3, entering the bottom of the seventh, the Sox loaded the bases on a single by Jim Rice and walks to Carl Yastrzemski and Carney Lansford. A walk to Dave Stapleton tied the score and Reggie Cleveland relieved Jamie Easterly for Milwaukee. Tony Perez struck out but Gary Allenson swatted a grand slam. Rick Miller then drilled a two-bagger and Cleveland left in favor of Jerry Augustine. Jerry Remy walked and reliever Dwight Bernard came on to be greeted by Dwight Evans' RBI single. Rice then walked to load the bases and Yastrzemski smacked a two-run single.

Angels 7, White Sox 3 at California (night game):
In a battle to escape last place in the A.L. West, the Angels downed the White Sox, 7-3. The Angels scored three runs in the first inning on RBI doubles by Dan Ford and Don Baylor and two errors on the same play by Sox third sacker Jim Morrison. Brian Downing rapped a three-run homer in the third.

Twins 6, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
The Twins knocked Kansas City out of first place in the A.L. West, downing the Royals, 6-2. Minnesota trailed, 2-1, when Ron Washington drew a one-out walk in the fifth inning, stole second and came in on Gary Ward's triple. Dave Engle, who had hit a solo homer in the third, then stroked a sacrifice fly. The Twins scored in the seventh and eighth on sacrifice flies by Mickey Hatcher and Butch Wynegar, and Glenn Adams doubled home a ninth-inning run.

Yankees 6, Indians 1 at New York (night game):
Reggie Jackson and Bobby Brown knocked in two runs apiece and Rick Reuschel scattered nine hits to pace the Yankees to a 6-1 victory over the Indians. Jackson slammed a two-run homer in the fourth inning after being knocked down by John Denny two innings earlier, and the Yankee slugger was challenged by Denny as he circled the bases. After Jackson crossed the plate, he and Denny began a fight that ignited a benches-clearing brawl. After an 11-minute delay, Jackson and Denny were ejected. The Yanks took a 1-0 lead in the first on Graig Nettles' single and made it 2-0 in the second on Wallie Randolph's single. Brown rapped a two-run single in the third.

Mariners 2, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Glenn Abbott, getting relief help from Shane Rawley, pitched the Mariners to a 2-1 triumph over the Rangers. Paul Serna cracked a leadoff homer in the seventh inning and, after Dave Henderson and Bud Bulling followed with singles, Henderson scored Seattle's second run as Julio Cruz bounced into a double play.

A's 6, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (night game):
Rick Langford recorded his 17th complete game in pitching the A's to a 6-0 shutout of the Blue Jays. The A's scored twice in the second inning on singles by Tony Armas and Wayne Gross and Keith Drumright's two-run double. Drumright had an RBI groundout and Dave McKay delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth. Gross belted a solo homer in the sixth.

Cubs 2, Mets 1 at Chicago (day game):
Combining on a four-hitter, Mike Krukow and Dick Tidrow pitched the Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Mets. The Cubs scored both their runs in the fourth inning. Ivan DeJesus led off with a triple and scored when catcher John Stearns dropped the ball for an error in a rundown on a grounder by Bill Buckner. Buckner advanced to second on Leon Durham's infield out and came home on a single by Steve Henderson.

Braves 3, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Pitching the first complete game of his career, Rick Mahler set down Houston on three hits as the Braves defeated the Astros, 3-1. The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Bob Horner singled, stole second and tallied on Matt Sinatro's single, the latter's first major league RBI. Atlanta added a pair in the fourth on a walk to Glenn Hubbard, single by Luis Gomez and two-run double by Mahler.

Expos 3, Pirates 2 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos took over first place in the N.L. East, nipping the Pirates, 3-2, as Jerry White broke a 2-2 deadlock with a one-out pinch-homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Expos had tied the game in the eighth on Gary Carter's double and a run-scoring single by Larry Parrish.

Reds 5, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Reds moved within two games of first place in the N.L. West with a 5-1 victory over the Padres. The Reds scored three runs in the first inning on a two-run double by George Foster and RBI single by Junior Kennedy. Paul Householder stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth and Kennedy hit an RBI groundout in the fifth.

Giants 8, Dodgers 4 at San Francisco (night game):
A four-run outburst in the sixth inning carried the Giants to an 8-4 triumph over the Dodgers. With the game tied, 4-4, Darrell Evans and Larry Herndon began the Giants sixth with walks, bringing on Tom Niedenfuer in relief of Dave Goltz. Jerry Martin struck out but Milt May rapped a pinch-single to score Evans, and a single by Johnnie LeMaster registered Herndon. Pinch-hitter Max Venable grounded out and Joe Morgan received an intentional walk to load the bases. Enos Cabell then capped the rally with a two-run single to left.

Phillies 9, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
A four-run uprising in the third inning sent the Phillies on their way to a 9-4 decision over the Cardinals. Larry Bowa began the Phils' fourth with a double and went to third on a single by Manny Trillo. After Dickie Noles sacrificed Trillo to second and Lonnie Smith popped out, Pete Rose drilled a two-run single and Gary Matthews followed with a homer. Matthews also delivered an RBI single in the fifth. Dick Davis clouted a solo homer in the sixth and Mike Schmidt smacked a three-run double in the ninth.
