Red Sox 5, Indians 4 at Boston (night game):
Rich Gedman had three hits, including a fifth-inning double that drove in the winning run, to pace the Red Sox to a 5-4 triumph over the Indians. The score was tied, 4-4 in the fifth, when Carney Lansford smacked a one-out two-bagger and tallied on Gedman's two-out double. Carl Yastrzemski belted a two-run homer in the first frame and Bob Stanley pitched one-hit shutout ball over the final 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory.

Angels 11, Blue Jays 5 at California (night game):
Exploding for six runs in the first inning, the Angels went on to rout the Blue Jays, 11-5. First-inning markers came on a two-run double by Bobby Grich, RBI single by Don Baylor and three-run homer by Dan Ford. Errors by Garth Iorg and Lloyd Moseby gave the Angels four unearned runs in a five-run second.

Brewers 8, Tigers 6 at Detroit (night game):
A three-run homer by Robin Yount with two out in the ninth inning lifted the Brewers to an 8-6 triumph over the Tigers. Yount connected on a 2-2 pitch to score Jim Gantner, who had singled, and Paul Molitor, who had been hit by a pitch. Rollie Fingers pitched the ninth chukker to register his 27th save.

Mariners 8, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
The Mariners won their fourth straight game, 8-3 over the Royals, behind the seven-hit pitching of Floyd Bannister. The Mariners broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Bud Bulling and an RBI single by Dan Meyer. Tom Paciorek and Bruce Bochte hit solo homers in the sixth.

Rangers 5, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A three-run homer by Pat Putnam was the big blow as the Rangers posted a 5-2 victory over the Twins. Texas scored in the second inning on an RBI single by Leon Roberts, and Putnam connected for the circuit in the third to score Al Oliver, who was aboard via a fielder's choice, and Buddy Bell, on base via a walk.

Orioles 1, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Scott McGregor struck out 11 batters in twirling the Orioles to a 1-0 blanking of the Yankees. Baltimore scored in the fifth inning on a walk to Doug DeCinces and two-out singles by Al Bumbry and Rich Dauer.

White Sox 6, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
A three-run homer by Chet Lemon climaxed a four-run eighth inning that lifted the White Sox to a 6-2 triumph over the A's. Tony Bernazard stroked a one-out single in the Sox eighth and advanced to second on a groundout by Harold Baines. Greg Luzinski then singled home Bernazard and, after Carlton Fisk singled, Lemon connected for the circuit.

Reds 10, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Lashing out 14 hits, the Reds romped to a 10-2 trouncing of the Braves as Mario Soto went the route in scattering eight hits. The Reds tallied twice in their first turn at bat on a run-scoring forceout by Johnny Bench and an RBI double by Joe Nolan. Ron Oester smacked a solo homer in the second stanza. The Reds broke the game open with three runs in the fifth on a bases-empty circuit clout by Ray Knight and two-run single by George Foster.

Phillies 9, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Gary Matthews drove in five runs with a single and homer and Mike Schmidt blasted a two-run homer to power the Phillies to a 9-2 thumping of the Cubs. Schmidt's swat tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning and Matthews stroked a two-run single in the fifth to put the Phils ahead, 4-2. Matthews later smacked a three-run round-tripper in the seventh.

Dodgers 3, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Four-hit pitching by Burt Hooton carried the Dodgers to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Astros. Dusty Baker delivered an RBI single in the first inning and the Dodgers scored twice in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Ken Landreaux and sacrifice fly by Baker.

Expos 6, Mets 3 at Montreal (night game):
Driving in four runs, Larry Parrish led the Expos to a 6-3 victory over the Mets. Parrish drilled an RBI double in the fourth inning, run-scoring single in the sixth and climaxed a four-run seventh with a two-run single. Montreal, extending its winning streak to six games, increased its lead in the N.L. East to 2½ games.

Giants 3, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Al Holland, making his first big league start after 103 relief appearances, allowed just five hits in eight innings as the Giants blanked the Padres, 3-0. The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Enos Cabell scored as Milt May grounded into a double play. Dave Bergman drilled a solo homer in the seventh and Larry Herndon bounced into an RBI forceout in the ninth. Greg Minton recorded his 18th save.

Pirates 5, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
A homer by Lee Lacy ignited a four-run fourth inning that enabled the Pirates to edge the Cardinals, 5-4. The Bucs were behind, 2-1, when Lacy opened the fourth frame with a round-tripper. Pittsburgh picked up three more runs on RBI singles by Eddie Solomon and Tim Foli and an error by Redbird catcher Darrell Porter.
