Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 8, Red Sox 7 at Boston (day game):
A double by Bo Diaz in the 11th inning drove home the winning run as the Indians outlasted the Red Sox, 8-7. The two-bagger plated Jorge Orta, who had cracked a one-out double. Boston had tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, two-run homer by Dwight Evans.

Blue Jays 4, Angels 3 at California (day game):
Dave Stieb and Joey McLaughlin combined on a four-hitter and John Mayberry clouted a two-run homer as the Blue Jays shaded the Angels, 4-3. Toronto was behind, 3-2 in the eighth inning, when Garth Iorg stroked a one-out single and Mayberry followed with his round-tripper that enabled the Jays to end their five-game losing streak.

Tigers 2, Brewers 1 at Detroit (day game):
Four-hit pitching by Dan Petry enabled the Tigers to shade the Brewers, 2-1. The first Detroit run came in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, and the Tigers broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth when Kirk Gibson singled, stole second and tallied on a single by Ron Jackson.

Royals 15, Mariners 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Pounding five Seattle pitchers for 22 hits, the Royals routed the Mariners, 15-3. George Brett, Amos Otis, Willie Wilson, Willie Aikens and Hal McRae had three hits apiece. K.C. lashed out eight hits and scored seven runs in the sixth inning with a two-run triple by Wilson being the big blow. Brett triggered the hititng binge with a leadoff three-bagger in the fourth and scored on a double by Aikens.

Twins 5, Rangers 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Pete Redfern and Doug Corbett combined on a six-hitter to hurl the Twins to a 5-2 triumph over the Rangers. The Twins scored in the first inning on a double-play grounder and iced the game in the seventh on an RBI double by Gary Ward, run-scoring pinch-single by Pete Mackanin and RBI single by Hosken Powell.

Yankees 5, Orioles 2 at New York (day game):
A three-run homer by Reggie Jackson climaxed a four-run first inning that carried the Yankees to a 5-2 victory over the Orioles behind the four-hit pitching of Dave Righetti. Willie Randolph singled to open the N.Y. first, went to third on a single by Larry Milbourne and scored on a single by Dave Winfield. Jackson then blasted a ball 450 feet into the center field seats.

[DH] White Sox 9, A's 5 (day game) / White Sox 10, A's 3 at Oakland (day game):
The White Sox swept a doubleheader from the A's, winning the first game, 9-5, and the second game, 10-3. The Sox came back from a 5-0 deficit in the lidlifter after the A's tied an A.L. record with eight consecutive singles to start the bottom of the first inning. LaMarr Hoyt, who took over the Pale Hose pitching after the first five hits, went the rest of the way to stop the A's and earn the victory. The Sox went ahead in the sixth stanza on two-run homers by Chet Lemon and Tony Bernazard. Harold Baines belted a three-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap and Wayne Nordhagen added a solo blast in the same frame. Lemon and Carlton Fisk crashed consecutive homers in the fifth and Fisk added a two-run blast in the seventh.

Reds 4, Braves 2 at Atlanta (day game):
Tom Seaver and Mike LaCoss combined on a five-hitter as the Reds posted a 4-2 decision over the Braves. Seaver had to retire with a strained muscle in his right thigh after five frames and LaCoss came on to hurl three-hit ball over the final four. The Reds scored three runs in the second inning. Ray Knight led off with a double and Ron Oester and Paul Householder walked to load the sacks. Ken Griffey then cleared the bases with a two-bagger.

[DH] Phillies 5, Cubs 2 (day game) / Cubs 14, Phillies 0 at Chicago (day game):
The Phillies and Cubs divided a twin bill, the Phils taking the opener, 5-2, as Steve Carlton notched his 13th victory, and the Cubs capturing the nightcap, 14-0, behind a barrage of extra-base hits. The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the lidlifter on a sacrifice fly by Mike Schmidt, and iced the contest in the fourth on a three-run homer by Bake McBride. Pat Tabler belted a three-run homer to put the Cubs up 3-0 in the second inning of the second game. It was his first big league homer. Bill Buckner and Ty Waller drove in four runs apiece, Buckner with a pair of homers and a two-run double, and Waller with an RBI single and bases-loaded triple.

Astros 4, Dodgers 1 at Houston (night game):
Don Sutton flirted with a no-hitter for six innings but then settled for a two-hitter in twirling the Astros to a 4-1 triumph over the Dodgers. Houston's first run came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Terry Puhl, and the Astros put the game away with a three-run outburst in the seventh. Sutton, 11-8, improved his "second season" record to 7-1.

Mets 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
In a contest delayed 2½ hours by rain, the Mets ended Montreal's seven-game winning streak, edging the Expos, 2-1. The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the second on a triple by Dave Kingman and double by Rusty Staub, and added another marker in the seventh on a run-scoring double by Ellis Valentine. The Expos scored a run in the ninth and had the tying run on third with two out before Neil Allen, recording his 18th save, retired Jerry White on a popup.

Giants 7, Padres 3 at San Diego (day game):
Doyle Alexander recorded his 10th victory and also smashed a bases-loaded double during a six-run fourth inning as the Giants prevailed over the Padres, 7-3. Jack Clark opened the fourth with a homer. Other runs came in on an RBI single by Bob Brenly, Alexander's three-run double and an error.

Cardinals 7, Pirates 5 at St. Louis (day game):
Tommy Herr broke a 1-for-17 slump with a bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning and then stole home to spark the Cardinals to a 7-5 victory over the Pirates. The Redbirds tallied once in the second inning on an error by Bucs left fielder Lee Lacy. They loaded the bases with one out in the fourth on walks to Ken Oberkfell and Darrell Porter and an error by third baseman Bill Madlock. After Dave LaPoint struck out, Herr drilled a ball to the left-center field wall and then stole home to cap the four-run frame. Dave Parker drove in all five runs for Pittsburgh with a three-run homer in the sixth and two-run double in the eighth.
