Angels 6, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Scattering six hits, the Angels' Mike Witt blanked the White Sox, 6-0. The Angels scored in the fourth inning when Rod Carew singled, stole second and came in when third baseman Jim Morrison booted a grounder by Don Baylor. Baylor stroked an RBI single in the sixth and the Angels scored four runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Baylor and Bobby Grich and a two-run single by Brian Downing.

Indians 6, Yankees 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Tom Brennan went the distance for the first time in five starts since being recalled from the minors, unfurling a six-hitter as the Indians downed the Yankees, 6-2. The Tribe took a 1-0 lead in their first turn at bat on an RBI single by Toby Harrah, and sent N.Y. starter Rick Reuschel to the showers in the second on singles by Jerry Dybzinski and Miguel Dilone and a two-run single by Jorge Orta. Cleveland scored three times in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Orta, RBI double by Von Hayes and RBI singe by Harrah.

Orioles 7, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Sammy Stewart pitched 8 1/3 innings of shutout relief, enabling the Orioles to post a 7-3 come-from-behind triumph over the Tigers. After Detroit kayoed Baltimore starter Jim Palmer with a three-run first inning, the Birds went ahead in the third on a two-run double by Eddie Murray and two-run homer by Benny Ayala. Murray iced the contest with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Brewers 1, Red Sox 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Pete Vuckovich tossed a three-hitter and Mark Brouhard hit a one-out homer in the seventh inning to give the Brewers a 1-0 triumph over the Red Sox, vaulting Milwaukee into first place in the A.L. East.

Royals 6, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Dennis Leonard posted his eighth complete game in pitching the Royals to a 6-1 victory over the Twins. K.C. took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run homer by Willie Aikens, and upped their margin to 3-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Darryl Motley. Hal McRae belted a two-run homer in the ninth.

Rangers 6, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
A three-run double by Mark Wagner in the second inning propelled the Rangers to a 6-5 decision over the Mariners. Wagner's blow followed a single by Pat Putnam, double by Jim Sundberg and walk to Leon Roberts. Buddy Bell stroked a sacrifice fly in the third, and singles by Mickey Rivers, Al Oliver, Bell and Sundberg in the fifth frame produced the final two Texas markers.

Braves 2, Dodgers 1 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves snapped a four-game losing skein by edging the Dodgers, 2-1. Dale Murphy led off Atlanta's seventh inning with a single and scored on a triple by Glenn Hubbard. Matt Sinatro then singled to center to plate Hubbard with the game-winning marker.

Giants 4, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Alan Hargesheimer and Greg Minton combined on a four-hitter as the Giants whitewashed the Reds, 4-0. The Giants tallied twice in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Milt May and RBI single by Johnnie LeMaster. Jerry Martin cracked a two-run homer in the sixth.

Astros 2, Padres 1 at Houston (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Astros shaded the Padres, 2-1. Tony Scott opened the ninth with a single and was forced at second by Jose Cruz. Alan Ashby and Cesar Cedeno then walked to load the sacks and Art Howe followed with a checked-swing single through the right side.

Phillies 12, Mets 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Lonnie Smith, extending his hitting streak to 17 games, banged out three hits and scored three runs to spark the Phillies to a 12-4 rout of the Mets. Seven Mets pitchers gave up 12 hits, six walks and hit three batters. Larry Christenson, the third Philadelphia pitcher, relieved in the sixth and raised his record to 4-6 with four shutout frames.

[DH] Pirates 4, Cubs 0 (night game) / Cubs 3, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates and Cubs split a doubleheader, the Bucs taking the opener, 4-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Rick Rhoden, and the Cubs winning the nightcap, 3-1. In the first game, Bill Madlock delivered a sacrifice fly in the first inning and drove in another run with a third-inning groundout. In the second game, Steve Henderson blasted a two-run homer in the second inning and got an RBI single in the fifth.

Cardinals 6, Expos 2 at St. Louis (night game):
A two-run double by Darrell Porter highlighted a five-run fourth inning that carried the Cardinals to a 6-2 triumph over the Expos. Consecutive singles by Tommy Herr, Garry Templeton and Keith Hernandez loaded the bases to begin the St. Louis fourth. A groundout by George Hendrick produced one run and Dane Iorg followed with a sacrifice fly. A single by Ken Oberkfell kept the rally alive and Porter then drilled his two-bagger. After an intentional walk to David Green, John Martin capped the outburst with a run-scoring single.
