Angels 5, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Bruce Kison, getting relief help from Steve Renko, recorded his first victory since May 21, 1980, as the Angels prevailed over the White Sox, 5-1. California scored in the third inning when Steve Lubratich collected his first major league hit, a leadoff double, went to third on a sacrifice and came in on a single by Rick Burleson. Don Baylor lashed a two-run homer in the sixth and Bobby Grich followed with another circuit swat.
Indians 3, Yankees 2 at Cleveland (night game):
A two-run single by Miguel Dilone enabled the Indians to defeat the Yankees, 3-2. The score was 1-1 when Dave Rosello opened the eighth with a single and went to third on a double by Rick Manning. After Ron Davis replaced Ron Guidry on the hill for N.Y. and issued an intentional walk to Von Hayes to load the bases, Dilone slapped a grounder off second baseman Andre Robertson's glove for a hit as Rosello and Manning raced home.
Tigers 14, Orioles 0 at Detroit (night game):
Blasting off with a five-run first inning, the Tigers went on to a 14-0 rout of the Orioles. Detroit scored in the opening frame on an error by Baltimore catcher Dan Graham, RBI single by Ron Jackson, error by left fielder John Lowenstein and two-run single by Lou Whitaker. A three-run pinch-triple by Rick Leach highlighted a five-run sixth.
Red Sox 7, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
A pair of homers by Dave Stapleton and a two-run homer by Rich Gedman powered the Red Sox to a 7-2 triumph over the Brewers. The Sox scored in their first turn at bat on a walk to Jerry Remy, wild pitch and RBI single by Carl Yastrzemski. Stapleton connected for the circuit with the bases empty in the fourth inning and Gedman clouted his two-run shot later in that same frame. Stapleton's second homer was a solo affair in the seventh.
Royals 4, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
A first-inning homer by George Brett triggered the Royals to a 4-2 victory over the Twins. Brett also drilled an RBI triple in the seventh after K.C. had broken a 2-2 tie in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Hal McRae. Dan Quisenberry, in relief of starting pitcher Jim Wright, recorded his 18th save.
A's 5, Blue Jays 1 at Oakland (day game):
Tom Underwood recorded his first complete game of the season on a four-hitter as the A's downed the Blue Jays, 5-1. Oakland picked up a pair of markers in the fifth inning on Mike Heath's grounder which was fumbled by Jays shortstop Alfredo Griffin, and a squeeze bunt by Dave McKay. Jim Spencer cracked an RBI double in the sixth and the A's scored two runs in the seventh on singles by Keith Drumright, McKay, Fred Stanley and Rickey Henderson.
Rangers 6, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
A three-run homer by Billy Sample triggered the Rangers to a 6-2 decision over the Mariners. Sample's blast came in the second inning after walks to Jim Sundberg and Leon Roberts. Doc Medich allowed six singles over the first seven frames to notch his 10th victory and Jim Kern came on to record his sixth save.
Dodgers 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run outburst, aided by two errors, in the ninth inning lifted the Dodgers to a 5-3 victory over the Braves. The Dodgers trailed, 3-2, when Mike Marshall began the ninth by reaching second on a throwing error by shortstop Paul Runge. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Rick Monday. One out later, Jack Perconte lashed a tie-breaking triple and scored when Runge committed his second error of the inning on a gruonder by Steve Sax.
Reds 4, Giants 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Reds edged the Giants, 4-3. George Foster led off the Reds ninth with a double and held second as Johnny Bench beat out an infield hit. Ray Knight attempted to sacrifice but forced Foster at third. Ron Oester then lined a single to send pinch-runner Rafael Landestoy home with the winnng run.
Padres 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Rick Wise and Gary Lucas combined on a four-hitter, lifting the Padres to a 2-1 triumph over the Astros. The Padres scored both their runs in the first inning on a walk to Gene Richards, triple by Luis Salazar and single by Barry Evans.
Mets 7, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pete Falcone was the pitching and batting hero, tossing a four-hitter, belting his first major league homer and driving in three runs as the Mets whitewashed the Phillies, 7-0. Falcone's round-tripper led off the Mets third inning and he delivered a two-run single in the sixth.
Pirates 10, Cubs 6 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A four-run rally in the seventh inning carried the Pirates to a 10-6 victory over the Cubs. The Bucs broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh on an RBI single by Dale Berra and continued the outburst on a two-run pinch-single by Willie Stargell. Omar Moreno capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Cardinals 8, Expos 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Shelling five Montreal pitchers for 13 hits, the Cardinals routed the Expos, 8-4, and took over first place in the N.L. East. The Redbirds took a 3-2 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Gene Tenace and RBI single by Ken Oberkfell. Garry Templeton stroked a sacrifice fly in the second and the Redbirds added another pair in the third on a run-scoring triple by Oberkfell and RBI bunt single by David Green. Oberkfell, who went 4-for-4, drove in his third run of the game with a fifth-inning single.
