Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Tigers 4 at Detroit (day game):
Eddie Murray led off the 10th inning with a single, advanced on a wild pickoff throw by Kevin Saucier, moved to third on a groundout by Doug DeCinces and scored on Gary Roenicke's sacrifice fly to push the Orioles past the Tigers, 5-4. The setback dropped the Tigers half a game behind the Brewers in the American League East.

Giants 6, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Doyle Alexander, with three-inning relief help from Greg Minton, notched his 11th victory by pitching the Giants to a 6-2 triumph over the Braves. Larry Herndon had two hits and drove in three runs.

Astros 8, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Astros, capitalizing on 11 walks and the seven-hit pitching of Nolan Ryan, downed the Reds, 8-1, and increased their lead in the National League West to 1½ games. With the Astros leading, 1-0, in the seventh inning, Reds reliever Joe Price walked Phil Garner and Jose Cruz with the bases filled to make the score 3-0.

Padres 1, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Fred Kuhaulua, who went eight innings, and Eric Show combined for a five-hitter as the Padres shaded Fernando Valenzuela and the Dodgers, 1-0. The Padres scored an unearned run in the second, grouping back-to-back singles by Barry Evans and Dave Edwards and a throwing error by Derrel Thomas to send Valenzuela down to his third straight defeat.

Cubs 2, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Two home runs by Rusty Staub marked the Mets' 2-2 tie with the Cubs in a game halted by rain after a one hour, 14 minute delay in the ninth inning. Because the Expos won, eliminating the Mets from the N.L. East race, the game was not scheduled to be completed.

Cardinals 3, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Cardinals stayed on the Expos' heels in the N.L. East by pulling out a rain-delayed 3-2 decision over the Phillies in 10 innings. The game was held up in the bottom of the ninth inning for two hours, 59 minutes. After play resumed, Garry Templeton singled and scored on Keith Hernandez' double.

Expos 5, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Larry Parrish delivered a three-run triple in the first inning to send the Expos flying to a 5-2 victory over the Pirates. Montreal protected its half-game edge over St. Louis in the National League East.
