Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 9, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
A pair of homers by Dave Winfield and another by Graig Nettles powered the Yankees to a 9-0 victory over the Orioles. Winfield clouted a solo blast in the first inning and two-run shot in the fifth. Nettles drilled a two-run round-tripper in the first and added an RBI single in the seventh.
Twins 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Pete Redfern was credited with his fifth consecutive victory and Doug Corbett recorded his 17th save as the Twins edged the White Sox, 3-2. An RBI single by Pete Mackanin gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead in the second inning and the margin was boosted to 2-0 in the third on a run-scoring single by Gary Ward. The final Minnesota tally came in the fifth on an RBI single by Dave Engle.
Indians 11, Red Sox 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Scoring 10 runs in their last three turns at bat, the Indians routed the Red Sox, 11-4, knocking Boston out of the case for the A.L. East second-half title. The Tribe was behind, 4-3, when Rick Manning led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Duane Kuiper. Manning went to third on an infield hit by Jerry Dybzinski and scored on a single by Miguel Dilone. One out later, Mike Hargrove walked to load the bases and Pat Kelly then walked to force in the go-ahead run. The Indians added six runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Kuiper and Dilone, a bases-loaded walk to Hargrove and three-run double by Kelly.
Royals 3, A's 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Dennis Leonard twirled the Royals to a 3-0 blanking of the A's. K.C. scored in the third inning on an error by Oakland left fielder Rickey Henderson, in the fourth on an RBI single by Willie Wilson and in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Amos Otis.
Brewers 8, Tigers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers moved to within one triumph of the A.L. East second-half title with an 8-2 decision over the Tigers. Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a homer by Ben Oglivie and chased Tigers starter Dan Petry with a three-run fifth frame, markers coming on an RBI single by Yount, error by left fielder Steve Kemp and run-scoring single by Cecil Cooper. Paul Molitor drilled a two-run double and Yount added a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Mariners 8, Blue Jays 3 at Seattle (night game):
Blasting off with four runs in the first inning, the Mariners went on to an 8-3 victory over the Blue Jays. Julio Cruz walked, Dan Meyer singled and Tom Paciorek followed with a double to plate Cruz. Meyer also came in when shortstop Alfredo Griffin bobbled the outfield relay. Two outs later, Jim Maler singled to chase Paciorek home and Joe Simpson capped the outburst with a triple.
Rangers 8, Angels 6 at Texas (night game):
A two-run homer by Mark Wagner in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Rangers an 8-6 victory over the Angels. Wagner's blast followed a two-out single by Don Werner. Texas had tied the contest at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Al Oliver.
Braves 11, Reds 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
Gaylord Perry received credit for his 297th career victory as the Braves bludgeoned the Reds, 11-5. Atlanta tallied twice in the first inning on an RBI double by Claudell Washington and run-scoring single by Dale Murphy. Washington, who clouted a three-run homer in the fifth and had five RBIs in the contest, doubled home a fourth-inning run before Chris Chambliss followed with a bases-loaded triple.
Dodgers 6, Astros 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Four-hit pitching by Jerry Reuss led the Dodgers to a 6-1 victory over the Astros, preventing Houston from clinching the second-half title in the N.L. West. The Astros also lost pitcher Don Sutton for the remainder of the season when he suffered a fractured right kneecap after being hit by a pitch in the third inning. The Dodgers scored in the second inning on an RBI double by Rick Monday and added another marker in the fourth when Pedro Guerrero bounced into a double play. Steve Garvey and Dusty Baker delivered RBI singles in a three-run seventh and the third run of the frame came home on a wild pitch.
Expos 3, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Brilliant two-hit pitching by Steve Rogers enabled the Expos to move closer to clinching the "second season" title in the N.L. East with a 3-0 blanking of the Mets. The Expos took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a solo homer by Warren Cromartie and iced the contest in the eighth with a bases-empty round-tripper by Andre Dawson and RBI single by Jerry Manuel.
Phillies 9, Cubs 7 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run pinch-homer by Mike Schmidt in the bottom of the ninth inning rallied the Phillies to a 9-7 victory over the Cubs. The Phils trailed, 7-6, when Gary Matthews led off the ninth with a single, was sacrificed to second by Ramon Aviles and took third on an infield hit by Garry Maddox. Manny Trillo popped up for the second out but Schmidt then followed with his 30th round-tripper of the season.
Pirates 8, Cardinals 7 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A pinch-double by Mike Easler in the bottom of the ninth inning enabled the Pirates to edge the Cardinals, 8-7, in a sloppily played game played in near-freezing temperatures. The score was 7-7 when Omar Moreno opened the Bucs' ninth with a walk and reached second on a sacrifice by Tim Foli. After Dave Parker was walked intentionally, Easler lashed a drive to left-center that bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double. The Redbirds had deadlocked the contest in the top of the ninth on a leadoff homer by George Hendrick and a two-out circuit swat by Darrell Porter.
