Orioles 3, Yankees 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Eddie Murray slammed a three-run homer to back Scott McGregor's seven-hit hurling as the Orioles blanked the Yankees, 3-0. Murray's blast came in the first inning after one-out singles by Rich Dauer and Ken Singleton.

White Sox 5, Twins 4 at Chicago (day game):
A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning enabled the White Sox to shade the Twins, 5-4. The game was tied, 4-4, when Carlton Fisk singled with one out in the ninth. After Jim Essian struck out, Leo Sutherland and Bill Almon walked to fill the bases. Pinch-hitter Jerry Turner then walked on Bob Veselic's 3-1 serve to force Fisk home with the game-winning marker.

Red Sox 4, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Picking up his first victory since June 10, Frank Tanana scattered 10 hits in pitching the Red Sox to a 4-0 whitewashing of the Indians. Jim Rice belted a solo homer for the Sox in the first inning and Boston added a pair of runs in the second on run-scoring singles by Rick Miller and Glenn Hoffman. Hoffman also stroked an RBI single in the sixth.

A's 8, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Lashing out 14 hits, the A's subdued the Royals, 8-4. Oakland scored twice in its first turn at bat on an RBI double by Tony Armas and run-scoring single by Mickey Klutts. Kelvin Moore hit his first major league homer -- a solo shot -- in the fourth frame and Armas highlighted a three-run sixth with a two-run round-tripper. Armas collected his fourth RBI of the game with a single in the seventh.

Brewers 2, Tigers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Rallying for two runs in the eighth inning, the Brewers edged the Tigers, 2-1, to clinch the second-half title in the A.L. East. Trailing, 1-0, going into the bottom of the eighth, the Brewers loaded the bases on a walk to Paul Molitor, bunt by Robin Yount on which first baseman Ron Jackson failed to make a play, and a bunt by Cecil Cooper on which pitcher Jack Morris did not throw to any base. A groundout by Ted Simmons scored Molitor and Gorman Thomas followed with a sacrifice fly.

Blue Jays 4, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Dave Stieb, pitching a two-hitter over 8 1/3 innings, notched his 11th victory of the season as the Blue Jays triumphed over the Mariners, 4-3. Ernie Whitt hit a solo homer to tie the score at 1-1 in the sixth stanza and John Mayberry put the Jays ahead, 2-1, with a two-out, bases-empty homer in the seventh. Al Woods followed Mayberry's blast with a double and came in on a single by Garth Iorg. Woods also singled home a ninth-inning tally.

Rangers 1, Angels 0 at Texas (night game):
Striking out eight batters and permitting only five hits, John Butcher earned his first victory of the season as the Rangers shut out the Angels, 1-0. The game's lone tally came on a two-out solo homer by Bobby Johnson in the ninth inning.

Braves 4, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Braves eliminated Cincinnati from the N.L. West title race by downing the Reds, 4-3. The score was 3-3 when Bob Horner led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single, took third on a single by Chris Chambliss and scored when Reds' second baseman Ron Oester caught Dale Murphy's line drive but threw wildly to first in an effort to double up Chambliss. Horner drove in the first three Atlanta runs with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings.

Dodgers 7, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Dodgers downed the Astros, 7-2, in a game in which both teams substituted freely after the Astros learned in the third inning they had clinched the N.L. West "second season" championship with the defeat of Cincinnati by Atlanta. Pedro Guerrero drove in three runs for the winners with a pair of singles, and Bob Welch upped his record to 9-5, giving up just three hits in six innings. Houston's Alan Knicely stroked his first major league homer in the sixth stanza.

Expos 5, Mets 4 at New York (day game):
The Expos clinched the N.L. East "second season" championship with a 5-4 triumph over the the Mets. Montreal was trailing, 3-0, but began its comeback in the fifth inning on a run-scoring groundout by pinch-hitter Brad Mills. Gary Carter belted a solo homer in the sixth to narrow the Mets' margin to 3-2 and the Expos went ahead in the seventh on a two-run pinch-triple by Wallace Johnson.

Cubs 8, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Henderson banged out four hits, scored twice and drove in a run to pace the Cubs to an 8-4 victory over the Phillies. Chicago broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning when pinch-hitter Steve Dillard walked, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a single by Bill Buckner. A triple by Henderson ignited a three-run seventh than iced the game for the Cubs. Mike Schmidt blasted his 31st homer of the season with two mates aboard in the fifth inning.

Cardinals 8, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Scoring seven runs in the first three innings, the Cardinals enjoyed an 8-3 rout of the Pirates. The Redbirds tallied three times in their first turn at bat on run-scoring singles by Keith Hernandez, Dane Iorg and Ken Oberkfell. Garry Templeton's RBI infield out accounted for a second-inning run. Darrell Porter stroked a sacrifice fly in the third and winning pitcher John Martin aided his own cause with a two-run single.

[DH] Padres 4, Giants 3 (day game) / Padres 7, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
The Padres swept a doubleheader from the Giants, winning the first game, 4-3 in 13 innings, and the second game, 7-2. The lidlifter was tied, 3-3, when Dave Edwards drew a leadoff walk in the 13th, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored when a grounder by Tim Flannery went through the legs of first baseman Dave Bergman for an error. San Diego broke a 1-1 deadlock in the third inning of the nightcap on a sacrifice fly by Juan Bonilla, RBI groundout by Terry Kennedy and run-scoring double by Ruppert Jones. Jose Moreno hit a two-run pinch-double in the ninth and then scored on a single by Broderick Perkins.
